Load of bollocks. Cameras showed him doing something with his thumbnail to the ball.
BUT - it was the shiny side, so why would he want to tamper with that AND the umpires have said they have no issue with it.
As Swann said - it's a slow news day and a poor attempt at unsettling the English team because the Aussies are on the wrong side of the match for a change.

WB, convince me he's not lifting the seam on the side of the ball facing him.
Using your nail on a ball is an absolute no no. If you want to do that, then you do it in front of the Umpire to avoid any complaints.
The umpires have said nothing other than to remind the English players to throw the ball in on the full.

Typical convicts! If things aren't going for them they have to find a way to say they've been cheated. They always been shocking sportsmen.

Dave, I can't convince you and I know what it looks like but tell me, what fast , seam bowler would want to do that to the shiny side of the ball?
At the end of the day, it's hardly as though Jimmy has torn through your batsmen with 7-40 or something, so it's a bit of a moot point anyway

I'm a bit like that tbh Al. :imp: Anything within the rules to gain a competitive edge is fine by me. It's why I spent hours communicating with the Rovers and the EFL last year in protest after Huddersfield made 10 changes from the previous match (after which they had definitely qualified for the play offs) and fielded a seriously weakened team against Redknapps relegation bound Birmingham. What they did was massively against the stated rules. So what did the EFL :poop: do after the season ended at their annual jolly in Portugal? Bloody well changed them!

I didn't know that Drog. What changes have they made? Bloody typical. They knew it was wrong but refused to do anything about it because it involved 'arry. If it had been Fergie in our place all hell would have been let loose.

Funny how the cons moan about tampering yet they got warned for throwing the ball into the ground , so did England .

We avoided the ignominy of another 5-0 , so thankful for small mercies .

The “ ball tampering “ saga is well covered in the article above . Took me back to my days in the Lancs League ( 2ndXI ) Our captain , a seasoned amateur who had played over 25 years in the first team was handing down his experience to us “ up & coming “ youngsters . A prodigious swing bowler , he used to raise the seam with a beer bottle top before the game & continued to during the game with his specially grown right thumbnail . That in the days when each team supplied their own ball .

I'm confused. Not being a cricketing expert shouldn't a pitch that will hold up well to the elements and 5 days of cricket not be the aim of a groundsman? I realise people like a result but surely it'll be a fairer test of cricket than winning / losing a simple toss of a coin which will not then be so instrumental in influencing the result of the match.

The ICC regs say a pitch should be rated poor if any of these four conditions are prevalent

a. The pitch offers excessive seam movement at any stage of the match

b. The pitch displays excessive unevenness of bounce for any bowler at any stage of the match

c. The pitch offers excessive assistance to spin bowlers, especially early in the match

d. The pitch displays little or no seam movement or turn at any stage in the match together with no significant bounce or carry, thereby depriving the bowlers of a fair contest between bat and ball.

In this case, we are looking at d.

England have produced their normal and hopeless performance on an Ashes tour . Thank goodness for that ‘poor’ pitch at the MCG , otherwise it would have been another whitewash .

Lots of soul searching for the ECB , Bayliss and Root after this . Yes the Aussies haven’t won in England for years but at least they’ve been competitive .

I'm not sure Root is captain material. One stat I heard about Smith was that he'd scored something like 14 runs in his test career in a particular area , but Root kept a fielder in that spot.
Broad is gone.
Anderson, despite trying hard had that look on his face: "wtf am I doing here?" He was badly let down by his team mates, and Bairstow, flinging off his gloves and chasing down balls when fielders should have been doing it.......
Crane will get there, as will Curran and one guy who's name escapes me who didn't play in this test with injury.

I see Crane ended the day with the worst figures by an England test debutant.

I wonder if the lad will be thrown to the wolves like young Kerrigan was after his debut?

Root taken to hospital in Sydney suffering de-hydration / heatstroke so I doubt he'll make it to the crease when play resumes.

Well that just about puts the tin hat on it all , probably be all over in the first hour. Let’s hope England can salvedge some pride in the one day games and then get out of Oz
