The real Brexit thread

It's getting serious now.

The Japanese ambassador gave a stark warning to the government today on the consequences of Brexit

“If there is no profitability of continuing operations in the UK — not Japanese only — no private company can continue operation,” he said. “So, it’s as simple as that. This is all high stakes that I think all of us need to keep in mind.”

The Japanese are very polite. But they have been very clear in the past and they are being very direct now about the risks to their businesses created by Brexit.

They are right to feel aggrieved, having invested large amounts of money and skills in this country on the basis of being part of the large single market. They have been given assurances post referendum of no disruption. But our Government is not to be trusted even now.

How shameful and how short sighted to treat reputable, committed and long term investors in this way. How can May not see what she is doing? What needs to happen before she and the rest of them change course?

"If there's no profitability then no private company can operate" - that's ground-breaking stuff that is.

Got any more nuggets of business wisdom?

Absolutely. We must hammer home that we import more from them than we export to them and they need us more than we need them.

Another cold sobering day for the 37 per cent.

Following on from yesterday's warning from the Japanese, Michel Barnier today said any transition deal would "not a given" after 3 days of fruitless days of talks in Brussels.

And he again called on the UK to provide “precise, clear and unambiguous” proposals to avoid reimposing a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, linking progress with talks over the transition.

“The UK has committed to proposing specific solutions to the unique issue of Ireland. We are waiting for such solutions,” he said.

The UK is presently like an employee who resigns from a firm and then starts telling HR that he wants to resign, but on his own terms, special bespoke terms, which the employer better grant him or else.

HR will just shrug their shoulders and say ok, all very interesting to hear, but we have other things to do....

The 51.8% voted for what Cameron told them they would get, no customs union, no free market, no ECJ jurisdiction , seems unambiguous to me, maybe it's the fact you don't like the result that is the problem :)

37%? You sound rather dismissive of that number JD but do you know that if you counted at 1 numeral per second, for 7 hours a day, 250 days per year that you might just reach the total number of Brexit voters by Nov 2021. Just a thought.

Has a Labour Government ever been elected with 37% or more votes of the population

What was the %age of those that voted to remain?
Was it less than 37%?

And what of those that didn't vote, what kind of retribution will the remainers visit upon them?

By Benji's reckoning about 34.4% are remoaners. Not worth entertaining are they?

Some interesting stats for sunny-upland 37% Brexiteers and hard right Eurosceptic nutcases in the Tory government to consider.....

UK exports to the EU = 43.6%, to the wider European market including Norway, the Swiss and Turkey = 53.1%. Exports to the US make up 15% in comparison. Exports to the other end of the planet Australia = 1.2%, New Zealand = 0.2%. And what about China? just 5.9% And our great colonial underlings, the Indians, just 1.3%.

We are 18 nautical miles away from the biggest trading bloc on the planet. The majority of our trade is done with those countries. When it comes to imports, 60.3% come from the wider European bloc, a monumental 0.7% from Australia and New Zealand, 1.5% from India, and 10% from China. And by the way, we import 50% more than we export by value.

German and French bilateral trade with the next world leaders China dwarfs ours, while being leading members of the EU.

So much for the Maybot's Global Britain bullshit.

Did Theresa May support Brexit or was she a remainer who as the new PM was handed the job by the democratic will of the people?

Did Jeremy Corbyn support Brexit or was he a remainer? ( btw Does he in any way support our democratic form of government or is he more in favour of the North Korean version?)

Does brexit mean that all trade to and fro with the eu will cease? The eu will be cutting off it's nose to spite it's face if that is the case.

Anyway Benjy, I've been meaning to ask for some time now. Are you just a dedicated remoaner and wind up merchant or do you support the Rovers? I only ask because you never comment on the football side of things which this mb is really about. Am I correct in the assumption that you don't follow football and know sweet FA about the game?
