The real Brexit thread

Dirty tricks campaign. I rem way back the protectionism France employed against Japanese imports of TV's and video players etc . Faced with superior and lower cost products they applied unashamed protectionism bu only allowing japanese imports of those products in some tiny port, miles up a river staffed by a couple of customs officials who spent most of their day playing cards and smoking Galouise and adhering in a genuine state sponsored 'Go Slow'. Meant that imports had to come by more expensive small ships and took forever to be inspected and allowed in. Typical continental obstructive behaviour which the Dutch are obviously intending implementing again. Time to fix bayonets I feel.

So there you have it: 62 fruit cakes! All it needs now is the remaining Tories who are still listening to industry and trade bodies to gain some courage and put the nutty fringe back in the box. Go for it Anna Soubry et all ! You have nothing to loose but some very dodgy company.

And if nothing else, this list provides a handy little list for the voters when Brexit continues from fiasco and farce to be so bad that the public want someone to blame.....

Yet some insist we should trust the government.

People are people, whether they are in the private or public sector. People will be biased in favor of whatever outcomes they believe (rightly or wrongly) will improve their lives, increase their power or privilege, prove the truth of their ideology or religion, etc. Why some are incapable of seeing that applies to government bureaucrats as much as a member of the general public is beyond me.

Any civil servant tasked with providing accurate forecasts who knowingly inputs incorrect data presumably on the basis of political gain should not only be carpeted and lose his job and associated entitlements he/she should also be charged before the courts. It's a form of treason isn't it?

Has any cabinet hated each other as much as this chaotic government's? asks the excellent Polly Toynbee.

She's right. The one thing the god-forsaken Tories will never admit is that they are split and divided from top-to-bottom.

As a person at the Chequers meeting was reported as saying tonight: “It all finished rather positively. It seems like everyone thinks they got what they wanted...”

Or in other words, the Tory infighting will continue and none of tough questions on Ireland, the customs union etc etc have been answered. It's more or less guaranteed that the next few days will prove this statement correct.

Meanwhile, the refusal of the government to face up to the serious consequences of leaving the EU is becoming extreme. A few days ago, the national press reported on the decision of the Dublin Port Authority to spend millions on providing new customs facilities in preparation for a hard Brexit.

Unsurprisingly, there are no preparations of a similar nature on the British side at Holyhead. Yet it is Britain that has decided to leave!

Thank goodness the rumblings from the Labour ranch on staying in the customs union are getting louder.
