Whatever next? John D's quoting Goebballs and I'm directing traffic to the Gruniad! I searched for somewhere to put this and ended up starting a new thread......
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...eague-clubs-bail-out-bolton-bury-nigel-clough

Now personally I think sod the Premier League clubs. Real should insist Gareth Bale squares up the finances of these two old Lancashire oops Greater Manchester teams as a condition of allowing him to go to China for a reported £1,000,000 per week. Of course by the time the Chinese taxman finishes with him that should be down to £999,999.00 per week! Just as an aside with 3 years left on his contract why shouldn't Real ask for a transfer fee?

BUT tongue out of cheek and in all serious is the demise of Bolton and Bury perhaps a consequence of the rise up the footballing superpower ladder of Man City? Lets remember at this point that Manchester's traditional second club has become the envy of the footballing world on the back of dodgy dealings by Thailand's Shinawatra and Abu Dhabi's Sheik Mansour.... both hardly champions of Human Rights are they?
However there but for the grace of God and presumably the foolish pride* of the venkys go us! (btw *same foolish pride that made them buy us I assume is keeping them signing cheques!). Not only us but in this area there go Blackpool, PNE and Wigan too!
In this instance Nigel Clough is wrong, way wrong. No one should bale anyone out. Might sound a little Thatcherish but if clubs cannot cut their coat according to their cloth then tough shitski. Why bale out a club when that money is not going to improve the facilities for spectators or employees. It's simply going into the bulging pockets of assorted average players and their agents. Most on here and BRFCS will know that it's been my opinion for decades that there are simply way too many clubs competing in today's Premier League and EFL. The number of empty stadium seats would be a Marketing man's nightmare in any other business, whilst the accounts of most of these club's would make any accountant worth his salt blush to his roots. The plain truth is that the players and their agents rule the roost. The tail really is wagging the dog! N0w I'm reluctant to single anyone out but when I see the money going to average talents of the likes of Ben Brereton and apparently this kid whose name I can neither remember nor pronounce from Citeh who we are informed is on 30k pw then something is way wrong. We the fans are being subject to one massive extortion racket. Our money is no longer going to support our club per sae, instead it's going to provide millionaire lifestyles and a full life without the need for employment after football for footballs wandering journeymen.

An excellent and decidedly relevant blast from the past as we ALL attempt to defy gravity on the world of football. Take 5 and enjoy.....

At the end of the day it shouldn't be hard to balance the books as a football club. No matter how badly your incomings are going, your 25 highest paid staff are all on short contracts and can be continually swapped out for staff on cheaper wages. So you just keep reducing your outgoings until the books balance

Obviously that will precipitate a plummet down the league and the fans won't like it but its better than going out of business. I've more sympathy for Bolton because, like us, much of their problems no doubt originated from the huge income gap between being in the PL and not. There's little reason Bury should be in this situation other than chronic management.

s.
Tell that to Blackpool fans. They weren't for having it were they?

btw That's another thing Drog FC would implement .... No transfer fees with money saved going to pay top wages and rolling 12 month contracts for most players. That'd sort out the workers from the shirkers in a squad.

Good luck with that matey. Only problem is that the big two would then be inundated with begging letters from struggling NW clubs, no doubt with Bolton's letter dropping on the door mat first.

However to review the situation, to help Bury etc now is totally against their ethos. The big clubs set off 50 years back to profit at the expense of smaller clubs with the measures below.
a. Abolishment of the maximum wage (60's).
b. Home clubs to keep the gate receipts.(70's)
c. Freedom of Contract for players.(90's)
d. TV/Media deals (90's)
e. Changes to youth / academy rules to allow the big clubs to snaffle all the best young talent away from small clubs and spit out the ones who fall behind the pack. (Last decade)

Also remember the G14 clubs? They were only diverted from setting up a European Super League by UEFA introducing the ridiculously big club biased Champions League format plus the mounting objections toward the concept from their own supporters who simply didn't want to play Barca and Juve every other week by ending fixtures against traditional rivals in this country.

Letrs be honest there may well be PR based crocodile tears but I doubt there is any room in United and City's pond for the likes of Bury and Bolton.

FFP? Strange one that Al. Might not work as intended but it is intended to prevent these things isn't it?

Yes but all it does is to make the rich clubs richer and the poor clubs poorer,

So poor old Bury and it's supporters. Anyone whose familiar with my scribblings over the years will know that I predicted the demise of clubs in the North West hence the 'Lancashire County / Lancs Utd shit that I've taken over the years. Just surprises me that so few others recognised the inevitability of this situation. Plain truth is that the business model which attempts to accommodate small club's incomes with players wage demands simply doesn't work anymore. Any club not wishing to emulate Bury and quite possibly Bolton soon too needs to cut their coat according to their cloth pretty damned soon.

Altogether now, 10 9 Green bottles hanging on a wall.......

Hmmm .... high time foreign ownership of football clubs was regulated properly and restricted to a maximum shareholding of significantly less than 50%.

Boracic Bolton were forced to sell their modern training ground at Euxton a few years ago to Wigan. Now it's financially strapped Wigan's turn to offload to raise money. PNE stepping in this time but of course Preston have Trevor Hemmings in control as owner and he is no fool! The ex brickie turned billionaire hates football, hates footballers even more and much prefers the sport of Kings, the gee gees! Unfortunately for him he's just had to sign a million pound cheque to offset the effects of Covid-19 on PNE and I've no doubt he will want it back asap.

I now fully expect either Euxton, their current training facilities at Springfield or a site they own at Ingol (which is earmarked for similar development) to be covered in new dwellings before too long.

Is he the perfect club owner? Provides a wonderful safety net whilst keeping a tight rein on spending from distance, doesn't look for publicity from the front like the Oystons, doesn't raise impossible expectation like JW and DW did at BRFC and Wigan which is impossible to continue forever and eventually sees supporters turn around to bite the hand that feeds them. Plus he will undoubtedly have the council and council planners in the palm of his hand.

After a disastrous start our lot are doing pretty well by us at the moment, although I am well aware that could change at any moment!!! Unfortunately being so far away they will invariably miss deals like this one which could have improved the finances at Ewood Park without even a ball being kicked.

Anybody else with my sense of foreboding that the venkys might have turned off the tap?
I've had that sense of foreboding for a long time - It's not if! It's when! And always has been - Anyone believing we will get a fairy godfather to save us is deluded (imo)

Lancs County could be just over the horizon. Pretty obvious for some time to a precious few visionaries of course.

Please don't shoot the messenger ;)........................
