I thought I'd post a thread on the town that our famous Rovers represents . Feel free to add anything Blackburn related ; positive , negative or otherwise .

My first contribution . As I drove home from work tonight I noticed that the " For Sale " signs have gone up at Blackburn Subscription Bowling Club , on Shear Bank and across from where the YMCA used to be . I'm not a Blackburn lad or a crown green bowler for that matter , but seeing the signs gave me a sense of sadness . Another piece of Blackburn history & tradition fading away. It is/was one of the oldest crown green bowling clubs in the country, established in 1749, in its present location since 1869.

You'll probably be right Pink . I've worked in that area for 30 years & the change in that time has been disheartening . Education centres opening & expanding with little girls dressed in black garb , sometimes in niqabs , dropped off by parents in similar attire , attending after school classes seemingly run by old men . Resembles something akin to Saudi Arabia .
I'm afraid the bowling club & the YMCA are prime sites for more of the same.

Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted! Wouldn't need to do all this pointless (imo) regeneration if the powers that be had limited immigration and set firmer rules to protect the indigenous way of life 50 years back. Stupid buggers, willing to sacrifice our heritage on a pointless, unwanted, unrestricted and ultimately dangerous exercise! I hope they rot in hell.

KGH scraping bottom of entertainment barrel ...Chas n frigging Dave ...mmmm no ta
Can't rem who posted this on here but after watching this I can see the reasoning behind Chas and Dave doing a gig in Blackburn. Who knows it might prove to be a sell out tour of Northern towns Abbs.

Still well funny isn't it?

Is this what used to be Ye Olde White Bull (Little Bull)? That's where my mates and I used to meet every Friday and Saturday night. Not been into Blackburn, apart from Ewood, for ages but if that is what has happened to the Little Bull it's very sad. It was the only place in the area you could get a pint of draught Mackeson. Lovely stuff that was.

Mackeson..... Looks good, tastes good and by golly it does you good.
I'm not sure that strap line would get past the advertising standards authority these days Al.

Just passed the old YMCA on Clarence Street and after being empty and derelict for what seems an age ( must be at least 15 years) it's being knocked down. I'm not a Blackburn lad but one of my ex girlfriends used to play badminton there in the 1970s. I've posted a link that has a couple of photos of it in its heyday .

There been a link between the planning refusal if the Islamic Free school and objections from the Bowling Club on the basis of parking I believe. Should the trust buy the bowling club and turn it into a car park that may change.

Yes you could be right Drog. There are already a couple of Islamic centres on Wellington Street St John's . One where the LFA offices used to be and a young girls education centre in the top corner , which has recently been extended. The traffic can be appalling at times on Wellington Street St John's , Clarance Street and Shear Brow. There used to be another Islamic Education Centre in a house on Clarence Street opposite the old YMCA , but that moved to Preston New Road. When that was open it was gridlock.

I really do hope that the Islamic Free Boys School doesn't have another go at seeking planning permission on the YMCA site as that would really snarl the area up and it would be cultural vandalism to turn that lovely bowling green into a car park. Having said that they built the Olive School on Meins Road on what I'm assuming was Billinge Grammar's old athletics track so little respect is shown for established sporting facilities.

Hopefully, if need be , Ibrahim Shafi ( the objector in your link) will play a blinder again - unless he gets leant on !
