Excellent “ review “ of Blackburn’s current night time offering Drog . Of the pubs you mentioned the only one I’ve tested recently is the Drummers and I have to say I enjoyed the ale & the company .

Very rarely go into Blackburn nowadays . Only for Soulnight which used to be a belting 5 times a year , 1500 sellout . Now just once a year and struggles to pull in 500 . The women that used to attend in its heyday were from various cities in the north and midlands so not the type you experienced last night

As far as the nightlife is concerned I think the Council are fighting a losing battle too . For a good night I always opt for the Northern Quarter , Manchester , always a good boozy night out with fairly normal fellow drinkers

Anyway off to the Rovers :)

No wonder it felt damp when the roof's been leaking for yonks.

Blackburn Arena hosting a Pro Wrestling Event (not "American Wrestling" you might see advertised on posters at KGH every so often I wouldn't even consider that an actual promotion its mostly cheap ripoffs of WWE characters) in April which will also be live on Freesports. Its promoted by 5 Star Wrestling (domestic promotion) and several events will be broadcast on Freesports from arenas including Liverpool and Manchester. Mostly UK wrestlers and at least one former WWE name so far Rob Van Dam. The real one not some guy dressing up as him. Can't say I'm a huge fan of his as his matches are usually "the same fn'ing thing" but probably will come across better in person than on Tv. He's certainly popular with what you would call "hardcore fans".

Wonder why the arena seems to be used so rarely for anything other than ice skating activities? There's been one previous Pro Wrestling Event there (WWE in 1994 ) and one concert (Status Quo) that same year. The Council owned it previously though at some point they sold it to Peel Group who own the surrounding retail park as well. I've only ever been inside when I was about 4/5 years old (likely no coincidence that's around the same time it opened) and a few times in the late 90's. Never did learn to skate either.

...and yes I know there's a couple of members who don't like pro wrestling. Point made the previous times its ever been mentioned here. The key point here being why is such a facility so seemingly underused? I guess it would be more of an issue if the Council still owned it.

"The key point here being why is such a facility so seemingly underused?" Public apathy maybe Vinjay.

Its not the publics job to book events there. They could host UK boxing events there (it was built to coincide with Manchester's very ambitious 1996 Olympic bid with the idea of some boxing contests there) and if Preston can support wrestling shows (which draw a crowd from surrounding towns too) then Blackburn can. The promotion who have booked for April are currently national (so once or twice a year at most) but one in Preston is primarily based there and has brought in wrestlers from overseas. I could do a better job of promoting that building all they generally host are Hawks fixtures and public skating.

Oh did you know Blackburn Hawks changed their name to Lancashire Hawks for a season in the late 90's. Made no difference other than annoying quite a few existing fans! OK ice hockey isn't exactly football but thought I would highlight it!

It was but the LT must have changed the story that the link was to.

Went into Blackburn for a couple of hours before the Boxing Day match.
Visited three pubs
Drummers Arms - 4th time I've been here and nothing has changed. I'm all for supporting local breweries but this guy has nothing outside of East Lancs and Fylde. Missed a trick for me. I want to experience ales that I'm unlikely to find elsewhere not stuff I can sup in many pubs in Blackburn, Accy and Darwen already.
Contrast to Hoppy Days in Longridge, best micropub in the area.
£7.50 for a round of 3 pints at Drummers, so OK.
Onto the Bees Knees - not overly busy but 3 hand pumps and a pool table, so we decided to give it a go.
Ale was acceptably OK - a stout from 3B, Wainwright and Hobgoblin.
Pool table was 50p but one cue and with no tip.
Nevertheless we had 3 frames and 2 rounds of ale.
I spoke to a regular who told me 3 weeks ago the cue rack was full of 6 new cues. Now there's one with no tip. In his words " they're just f*ckin animals that come in here at night".
£5.85 for 3 pints
On to Postal Order for a final pint. Don't really need to review Wetherspoons.
£6.15 for 3 pints. Plenty of choice and for me still the best, although the Napier would beat it on a music night...
Still wouldn't venture into Blackburn town centre for an evening out, especially with the wife :pensive:

BwD council is trying but it's such a shame THEY let it go in the first place.

Sad to say I think Swansea have more chance of a positive revival of fortunes.:(

I see the conmen ...oops council have raked in 620k in bus lane fines.
What a complete waste of money they've been . Buses hardly use them and motorists getting fined for pulling into them when emergency vehicles are trying to get thru.
