Hmmm indeed..... I wonder if Mulgrew's agent might have requested that? I'd hate to lose him because imo he is THE key man in Mowbray's plans.

Commented something similar in the 'Comings & Goings' thread. Hope that the rejected bid and injury are a coincidence but past experiences make you suspicious.

I'm still very concerned about our defensive capabilities / frailties , despite the absence of our " first choice " centre halves . We shouldn't be letting in three against Carlisle .

This has been an ongoing problem since Allardyce left . The success of any team is usually based on rock solid defence which in this division means two no nonsense centre backs, competent full backs and a reliable keeper , and being able to defend from the front . Is Mowbray a manager who can organise this ? I'm not so sure

We need another centre back for cover and to play when we go three at the back. Ward is OK in between Lenihan and Mulgrew but not good enough to partner anyone else in their absence. The full backs may be good enough for the first division but I was never convinced with either of them last season in the Championship so a full back who can play either at right back or left back would be good. We all know that we need another striker too asap preferably a quick youngster on loan from the premiership a la Gallagher.

I think a lot of the problems with the full backs last season was the lack of cover given to them by the winger in front of them. Several goals last season were caused by the winger, especially Feeney, not back tracking leaving the full back exposed. Hopefully this will be addressed this season.
I think we are too far down the chain for top premiership clubs to loan us players even for the likes Gallacher, it would be more realistic for the small premiership or Championship clubs at the moment.

I take your point and Feeney would never put on a Rovers shirt again if it was anything to do with me. As for loan strikers I don't buy the "too far down the chain" bit. If you don't ask you don't get and I would say that the type of football we have been playing with players like Mulgrew, Whittingham, Graham and Dack in the team it would be an ideal grounding for a young striker to learn his trade and the Premiership teams will be aware of this. We should be asking teams like Arsenal, Spurs and City for their talented young strikers on loan. It would be beneficial to us both.

I'm rather hopeful that Scott Wharton might step up to the plate this season.

Hopefully he can but I haven't seen it from him yet. To be fair I haven't seen a lot of him but when I have he has seemed to mistime a lot of headers. Not good for a centre back.

I hope that the shenanigans around Scott Wharton's pay rise for playing one more match have been put to bed and he will actually be available for us this season and not farmed back out on loan.

With a lot of money spent, for this level, on Dack and Samuel and also having Graham on the books as well, I can't see a young player getting much time on the field. Add to the fact Rovers are in the 3rd tier and we are in competition with a championship club then I'd suspect the higher level club would be the premiership's club prefered option.

You're entitled to your opinion but I believe that the players I mentioned would be seen as ideal to bring on a talented young striker. There would be plenty of game time if he was good enough. Graham can't play 90 minutes twice a week so he would definitely get on the pitch if he's good enough and if he's not there is no point in having him. This team that TM has got together is essentially a footballing team and is ideal to bring on a young striker. The Premiership clubs can see that.

How does anyone know for sure what preferred options are for sending players on loan? Each club is different. You also have to take into account Mowbray has been a manager for a while now and will know more people in football than some less experienced managers.

Sending a striker out to a club like Ipswich (been stuck in footballing limbo for 15 years now) or to a club that should be challenging for promotion? That's a key question and also "higher tier" does not mean that much. Playing for Blackburn Rovers is a far bigger deal than playing for someone like Burton Albion. The player may also have a say if there's more than one club wanting his services.
