Who do you fly with? I always now use Aer Lingus via Dublin as you do all the security in Dublin and walk straight out at NY following bag pick-up which saves time and frustration.

Finished booking my holidays for 2018 now. Fuengirola in March, Tenerife in June and Crete in September all in adults only Tui Platinum hotels. It's a long wait until March now though.

How come you don't get away from the cold winter and go abroad in Dec, Jan or Feb Al?
You need to go to the Caribbean at that time of the year and the cost of my dialysis there is more than I am prepared to pay. If I ever get a transplant, and I got good news from a consultant today that it might be possible, I'll be off to Jamaica or the Dominican Republic like a shot.

Canaries are OK at that time aren't they?

It's hit and miss in winter Drog. I once went to Lanzarote in December and it was cold and windy as hell, beside that when I arrange dialysis abroad the clinic in Accrington have a set of forms to fill in for the foreign clinic and I don't want to do it too often in case I kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. They are different for every clinic. They already call me Alan Whicker.

My Mum went to Gran Canaria (her first time abroad) a year ago and said she couldn't wait to come home because it was so hot. I told her it was a waste of money (which is why I declined to join her and my Sister) because she went for the weather in first place. Don't think I could live in that kind of climate and since I've got no interest in sitting on a beach or getting a tan would be unlikely to even visit anyway. I don't like it when there's heavy rain or wind blowing right in my face (or exceptionally cold weather and I don't mean typical stuff people moan about) but generally I cope fine with the temperatures here. Today at 7c according to google is fine for me though as I say wind and rain can get annoying plus I don't particularly care for ice because of slipping risk, etc. Its not that much of a risk I guess because last time I slipped on ice was just under 5 years ago and due to bad choice of footwear. I wasn't hurt (got up after a min or so after getting my breath back) though landing flat on your back still isn't pleasant. Better than head obviously but concrete is concrete.

Tolerance for cool + slightly cold weather keeps heating costs down too.

I took that route when I went to Boston earlier this year but in January I’m going Manchester to Newark with United.
WB: why do you find Newark better than JFK. Is it just price or travel into Manhattan. Ta BB.

Way back when I first flew to New York the best direct flight was into Newark by United and that’s the flight I still book most of the time. I even know which is the best extra legroom row to sit in (when I’m not being treated to business class). Same seat each time - what a boring sod I am ;).
There’s a shuttle bus for $15 from Newark to Manhattan that has three drop offs, two of which are at Bryant Park and Grand Central, so really handy for the Library Hotel.
To be honest, I’ve hardly experimented with anything else since. Sometimes I get a dial 7 car service but I just like the familiarity of knowing exactly where to go and what to do once I’m through immigration.
I should probably investigate alternatives but I like the direct flight, so popping on a shuttle to Heathrow or Dublin isn’t as attractive to me.

Two of my mates have gone in the last six months and neither would want to return. Massively expensive for the tourist apparently.
