Does it hell. Life is competitive for most except of course for those in the public sector and educationalists in particular. Teachers foir example think they are killed when Ofsted turns up to test their abilities. In the private sector every day is a test.
Yes, it's a test thinking all those different ways of trying to avoid and evade tax - a private sector speciality.

Mental toughness is probably more important in cricket than most other sports . It's a character building sport. Does our liberal , everyone wins a prize no one loses education system, prepare our young sportsman to front up to the mouthy , full of confidence , in your face Aussies ?

I don't follow cricket but I read an article many years ago about the 2005 Ashes winning squad, which said that almost to a man went to state schools.

Which makes your statement seem rather silly.

Chris , you're failing on detail again in your rush to make a point . I take it you're referring to :

"Does our liberal , everyone wins a prize no one loses education system, prepare our young sportsman to front up to the mouthy , full of confidence , in your face Aussies ?"

Read it again , you'll find it's a question , not a statement .

Thanks for the information about the 2005 Ashes winning squad, that's quite reassuring , especially for the likes of my wife ,who is cricket mad, teaches at a state school and organises an ex -pro from the Lancashire Cricket Board to coach youngsters in the summer term . It's an initiative that's been in place for 5 years or so. Like the wife , he doesn't stand for any messing and is a strict disciplinarian with the kids , although I accept their approach is seen as very old fashioned by the liberal educational “ experts “ The wife says the youngsters know the boundaries ( excuse the pun ) and thoroughly enjoy his sessions

I was reading an article/contribution ( can't quite remember) when some old working class warrior, obviously still fighting the class war put in his twopenny worth on cricket. He probably follows less cricket than yourself but said it's about time cricket was taken out of public schools ! Now that was a silly statement but in life I've found that a lot on the left are poisoned with envy and spread that poison into areas they haven't any knowledge of

Anyway back to the cricket , hopefully you'll contribute more to this thread. It's great to see you on a thread other than politics and Brexit. Cricket's a great game and as I "stated " in my post , grows mental toughness and is character building. It's never too late to learn about the game Chris , even if it's from the comfort of your armchair . If I can assist in anyway , don't hesitate to ask.

Public sector pensions perhaps providing an exception to your thinking.

Fact remains that the Public sector tends to appeal to the weak and insecure amongst us.;)

Just finished reading an article in the Daily Telegraph ( Chris don't have a fit - just the Sports Section )

Mark Stoneman saying he's never had to face an attack like the Aussies . He admitted " ...............the bounce was a lot steeper than I've ever experienced . There were balls that I was picking up the length fine but I was perceiving the level of contact to be chest height , which I would happily get in behind and ride, but they just kept climbing and I ended up splicing them in front of my face ...........................you've got 3 quicks coming in , you get one wrong and you wear it "

Now Stoneman showed fantastic courage and is averaging 32.2 runs , unbelievably ( aside from the tour in 2010/11 ) he's been England's most successful opening batsman since Micheal Vaughan in 2002/03

The selectors have to make debacles in Australia a thing of the past . We need more wickets like Old Trafford with pace and bounce to encourage our up and coming quicks , because just like football , pace frightens even the best .

Didn't even watch..forgot highlights ...or watched news.. . Either Aussie ton and 300-3 or English batting shambles all out for minus 200 and Oz 100-0

Warner a centurion and Smith ominously not out on what is a belter of a pitch*

England need to get some quick wickets in the first hour . How many times have I typed that ? This time with a real lack of enthusiasm

* Let’s see how England do when it’s their turn

The relief on his face when he reached 100 was clear to see.

Well, well. England did capitalise and congrats to Alastair Cook for making the highest score by a visiting batsman at the MCG.

Don't expect him to add too many more tomorrow with Jimmy as his partner but he might get 250.

We should at least draw this now and avoid the ignominy of a 5-0 whitewash. Fingers crossed for a morale-boosting win.

Be very close if Cooke had gone for 30-50. His innings has been the difference and I'd suggest that he's influenced the tail enders too as we haven't seen the usual collapse from them.

Cometh the hour... cometh the man.

Except the hour has already passed.:(

Load of bollocks. Cameras showed him doing something with his thumbnail to the ball.
BUT - it was the shiny side, so why would he want to tamper with that AND the umpires have said they have no issue with it.
As Swann said - it's a slow news day and a poor attempt at unsettling the English team because the Aussies are on the wrong side of the match for a change.
