That was dire. Germany , Brazil and the rest must be quaking in their boots . These days I don't normally watch England football matches but my daughter and son in law were round so we watched the full 90 minutes . Absolute dross from start to finish . As the game went on we began to poke fun at England's woeful football . My daughter asked me " Who would you rather manage England dad , Gareth Southgate or Jeremy Corbyn ? "

I've still not made my mind up but at least we've got a ready made moronic chant for Corbyn !

Towards the end a guy ran on the pitch . I told my daughter that even English pitch invaders are rubbish now and showed her the Youtube video of Eddie Kavanagh running on in the Everton v Sheffield Wednesday FA Cup Final in 1966 ( great game ) - yes the year Alf and his boys won the world cup !

This version hopefully brings a bit of cheer to what I'm sure could turn into a depressing analysis of the England national football team.

Qualified easily as would be expected in such a weak group but somehow we have to look to get our really creative talent involved in midfield. Too much reliance on the Henderson's, Dyer's and Livermore's whilst the likes of Barkley, Wilshire and Shelvey seriously need to be above them in the set up (I see Ally as far from the finished product that he obviously believes that he is! ). Somehow England's really top talent always underachieve in major tournaments whereas other nation's top players seem to elevate their club form to superstar level. There are exceptions of course as Messi doesn't seem to be able to play for the Argies like he does for Barca, but a string of very top players from Hoddle to Rooney have underachieved on the big stage whilst 2nd level talents of Lampard and Gerrard also punched well under their supposed weight and club form. Gazza gamely bucked the trend until his lifestyle did for him. imo even wayward and fragile foreign talent somehow manage to step up to the plate (and beyond) at international level as the expectations of their nation seem to take precedence over all else . Unfortunately the 3 Lions badge seems to work in reverse.

For me England currently have 5 attacking players of international quality. Kane, Alli, Lalana, Rashford and Sterling. Alli or Lalana off Kane with Rashford and Sterling out wide. Henderson and Dier sitting and Walker, Smalling, Jones and Bertrand at the back. That for me is a good side.

Unfortunately though, whilst we have a PL top 6 side in players (minus the keeper), the only England manager in the last 20 years of that level was Capello, who stormed qualifying twice and maybe would have done something with goal-line technology for Lampard's against Germany.

Jones under Moyes, Henderson under Hodgson, Sterling under Pellegrini, all poor. Having the right manager makes all the difference.

The FA remind me of Venkys in their managerial record, hire duffers and piss off the occasional good ones (removed Terry's captaincy to trigger Capello's resignation, sacked Allardyce). Southgate is a bad joke, relegating Middlesbrough and managing kids gets you the England job?

It could be argued that the England team doesn't even need a manager. Most of the time that team practically picks itself and the qualifiers are a foregone conclusion. Steve McClaren was considered an unmitigated disaster as England boss and they only missed out on qualification by one point.
International manager and club manager require very different skills. They are not with the players week in week out and able to form personal relationships so tactics, player selection and motivation are the three key areas for any international manager.
Tactics... to get the skeleton and shape right.
Player selection... for the best players to play that system which certainly does NOT mean best players per sae. Plus the players who will rise to the big occasion and not be intimidated by it. (I must admit that even at local level I never played to my best in cup finals and the most important games).
Motivation... A good international manager needs to be a true leader. A person who the players respect (NOT LIKE) and will be prepared to follow into battle. Allardyce has this quality in bucket fulls. I have rarely heard a player who has played under him ever speak a bad word about him. Compare Allardyce's effect when he walks into a room to that of Woy or Ssshteve! Pictures of Woy actually hunkering down and virtually hiding in the dug out at OT a couple of weeks back speak volumes. Whose going to be inspired to greater efforts by a supposed leader who hides?

Another fine 1-0 win against some ex Warsaw pact minnow, this time by a penalty by the otherwise excellent Harry Kane which imo many referees wouldn't have awarded, and which went in off the post. "Unstoppable" said Glenn Hoddle, "No keeper in the world would have stopped that" truth is that he failed to mention was that 2" to the left and it would have rebounded out! The bloody post would have done what no keeper in the world could have achieved!
Our midfield is desperately poor and our final balls into the box are way too predictable. I swear Henderson is turning into the new Ray Wilkins after another plodding display with almost every pass either square or backwards. The one time he did burst past a defender and cross first time was near to the end but it left the Lithuanian defenders in panic and disarray. Is that so difficult for our lot to grasp? The old Rovers formula when either Wilcox, Ripley or Le Saux had the ball on the wing was to flight a cross to the penalty spot as soon as they were level with the corner of the box and without looking up. Shearer new the plan and it was his job to get to where he knew the ball would be and get there in front of his marker. Any pause to look up by the player delivering the ball gave away the timing of the cross to the defenders and the element of surprise was lost. Simple but effective. Our lot not only look up when presented with time and space to deliver the ball into the danger area but then seeing that any advantage is lost chicken out and play it backwards to a teammate and repeat the process ad infinitum. The net result being that our strikers are being starved of the type of service which they must surely crave.

Delle Ali still flatters to deceive. 2 goals from 22 appearances against the type of opposition we've been facing of late being nowhere near good enough. He reminds me of the old Mohammed Ali line but with a twist... Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee..... and stings like one too! Somehow I don't really like the cut of his jib and imo this lad needs to stop reading how great he is and bring himself down to earth.

Another of my favourite dislikes is John Stones. People reckon he is a great footballer when what England are crying out for is a great defender. I'm sick and tired of seeing this lad apologising to his team mates for his latest rick.

On the plus side and whilst it's way too soon to judge I did quite like the contribution of Harry Winks.

After the Welsh players celebrated Iceland beating England in the European Championship , I guess this is what you call karma . Excellent finish from the Irish goal scorer

England U-17s into World Cup final after beating Brazil 3-1

U-20s won their World Cup in the summer, so it's obviously just the main England team that's crap!!

England U-17s win the World Cup beating Spain 5-2

I only caught the second half but it was a brilliant performance with some exceptional goals..... the last being the best assist you could ever hope to see! At the end it was men v boys.

I don't want to sidetrack from a truly marvelous achievement and exceptional performance by the kids but just a point, how come the Spanish team appeared to be full of indigenous Spaniards whilst our team looked like a league of nations X1? Could the Spanish selectors be accused of positive racism perhaps? Pretty sure the FA would be if our team had contained no black players. Perhaps it's also possible that our team selection could be accused of being racially unrepresentative of the UK population. Might that constitute 'negative' racism?

England v Germany. 70 mins and still 0-0. Good match up to now with many decent chances at both ends. I often stated that I could find a team of players from out of the big 4/5 that would play with heart and perform better than the 'big heads' have in major competitions. Seems Southgate has stumbled on the same thought albeit through necessity.
Some excellent performances especially from Pickford and Trippier. Loftus Cheek looks like he could be a real player! Keep it up lads!

I quite enjoyed the match. I know he is an ex Dingle but my man of the match was Trippier. He was almost unplayable down the right flank and was only subbed in my opinion to give Walker a bit of match time. As Drog says Loftus Cheek looks a good prospect and I think Abraham, who I'd never seen before, had a few nice touches, although he looked a bit like Bambi at times. He's only 20 though and will improve. A decent performance against the Germans for who Sane always looked dangerous.

Funny how options differ...I thought trippier was poor. Yes he got in positions but his final product was awful whether it was corners or crossing
