Thank Christ Wimbledon is now over for another year and we have BBC back. Now for some proper sport. The Open is starting on Thursday.

My mate loves it. It's obvious why cos he's played county level tennis for over 30 years and has been English seniors champ in the singles and doubles (twice). As a result it's one long 2 week freebie beanfeast for him. No queuing and best seats in the house all fortnight.
As for me ........ it's one long yawn.

The BBC used to annoy me as a young boy ( but not quite as much as it does now ) when they interrupted coverage of Test cricket to switch to Wimbledon in the 1960/70s . Ever since then I've had a dislike for both tennis and that over hyped 2 week yawn fest

Exactly the same for me. Hated it when they switched from a test match to Wimbledon. Thank Christ it's over for another year. Just need to get over "The voice kids" now and I can get my telly back.

Serena Williams loses the US Open final but attracts all the headlines for racket smashing and tantrum throwing and is docked a game for calling the umpire a liar and a thief.
Osaka wins her first grand slam title and is the first Japanese player to do so.
Unfortunately, the biggest moment of her young career is ruined and she ends up in tears at the presentation

Serena William's tantrums probably just down a severe case of jock itch in all that heat and humidity.

I'm not a big tennis fan but this incident really annoyed me . Serena's abuse of the umpire was completely out of order and the fact that he had to be escorted off the court to boos from the crowd , without receiving the gift umpires usually get , whilst she left the court with her runners up trophy to cheers and applause , just shows how society in general and sport in particular is arse about face . The umpire applied the rules correctly . Serena's conduct was appalling . Predictably we now have Billie Jean King, Elles DeGeneres et al turning it into to some sort of feminist crusade

To a lesser extent, Jimmy Anderson was rightly called out ( fined 15% of his match fee ) for his comments to the umpire on Saturday when he thought he'd got Kholi out LBW . The on field decision was not out, even though ball tracking showed that the ball would have clipped the leg stump . The umpire made the correct decision , Anderson should have accepted it , without question and got on with the game .

All that happens when these " stars" think they're bigger than their respective sport and that the rules don't apply to them , is the bad example they set trickles down to junior sport . Parents and children see that it's OK to question , criticise and abuse referees and umpires .The result is that fewer referees and umpires are willing to put up with it , resulting in a shortage.

Serena and her family have no doubt had to face incredible prejudice breaking into a sport like tennis and the fact that she's probably the best woman player ever , is amazing credit to her . No doubt , like other female tennis players she's also faced sexist attitudes, but to accuse the umpire of being sexist on this occasion, unless she has evidence to the contrary , was completely out of order and wrong . She needs to apologise to him

Serena should pack in with tennis now. Her physique is far more suited to playing prop in Rugby Union. She'd be a fearsome opponent (even in the mens game) but it'd be funny to see how the refs would react to her tantrums there.

In all seriousness though everyone needs to realise that it's all just tactics. Has been since the days of Connors and McEnroe and designed simply to upset the disrupt the opponent's game and rhythm when they are on top in the match. Everybody must know that if she'd been winning non of that carry on would have occurred. I'm really surprised the tennis authorities have let it go on so long.

Re: the title of this thread............ Andy Murray certainly! Imagine sobbing on telly and especially in Oz!!! He was never going to get back to what he was and as most know all good things come to an end sometime. I guess he'll just have to retire and spend his time counting his millions. The real people to deserve our sympathy are his back up team.

An overseas sportsman sobbing on TV in Australia? Isn’t that what they call cultural appropriation ?
