It was Huddersfield fan Harold Wilson who said "A week in politics is a long time". Well it is in football too it seems! I have no idea what went on down at Brockhall this week but the difference in the Rovers at Turf Moor and against PNE at Ewood last week was seismic! Instead of a team playing like strangers, devoid of spirit, energy and desire we witnessed the exact opposite! Sure Norwich gifted us the opening goal courtesy of an og by ex claret Ben Gibson (btw some might suggest this was a fluke but I put this down to a clever feint by Gally who gave the impression that he was attempting a flick into the far corner of the net when he obviously knew it would bounce off Gibson's shin into the near post and wrong foot Gunn in the process ). I have to say I feared for the worse when in that opening few minutes McCallum found himself all alone and in acres of space on Norwich's left a la PNE's Woodburn just 7 days ago. Had the Rovers learned nowt from that humiliation last week? Anyway apart from a number of misplaced passes and lost possession through the match the rovers were completely unrecognisable from the shambolic excuse for a Rovers team of last week. Snapping into the tackle and hunting Norwich down in numbers the Rovers took a Norwich team who must have spent all week watching videos of last week's match and who were completely unprepared for the terrier like performance of their opponents. Norwich had plenty of play and plenty of attacking but the 'they shall not pass' mentality of the defence and midfield denied them many clear cut chances.
During the first half I felt the forwards needed to put a more energetic defensive shift in and it seems that must have been the basis of the HT team talk as the 2nd half performance saw BBD, Dack, Gally and Dolan enter the fray cutting off the Norwich supply line in a much more determined manner. Even more satisfying was the willingness to attack in numbers when the chances came. Frustratingly after some great attacking moves the final pass all too frequently was either just to short or just too long otherwise the Norwich faithful could have experienced a dies horriblis like we did last week. A rather fortunate deflected Dolan shot by McCallum slipped past Gunns near post again on 86 minutes and it was time for JDT to light a cigar and enjoy a final few minutes which could have seen Dolan claim a hat trick! Sure tyrhys could and should have passed to an unmarked BBD for a tap in with one chance but no doubt a post match bollocking in the shower from our leading scorer will have pointed out the error of his ways. I have to say that BBD himself has been guilty of having a blast at goal when teammates were in much better positions so there was a hint of karma in Dolan's action. Needs sorting out though with video play backs at Brockhall of similar events.

Kaminsky.... 7 Never really troubled all day until he stopped a late header under the bar. I must say he does have the knack of anticipating where shots will go and is frequently waiting for them rather than making spectacularly athletic saves. No comparison here but that was a talent frequently attributed to the late great Gordon Banks.

Ayala... 7 We always look much stronger defensively with big Daniel in the back 3. One of Mowbray's better buys and without a doubt in my mind one of the best centre halves in the Championship! If only we could keep him injury free. Replaced on 59 minutes by Scott Wharton but again walked off rather than limped off..... is he somehow distantly related to Dunny?

Hyam.... 8 A top display all afternoon and given Sky Sports award for MoM.

Pickering... 7 Excellent return to the side and snuffing out most of the threats coming from Norwich's right wing until the introduction of the tricky Hernandez on 60 mins provided a sterner test.

Rankin Costello 7 A much better display from Joe who was brought in from the cold by JDT. Struggled at times in the first half with Sar, Sargent and McCallum until JDT reminded Dolan, Dack and Gally of their defensive duties.

Morton.... 7 A peach of a disguised free kick led to Gibson's og in the 4th minute. Played his part in a much more aggressive midfield performance. Could the psychological effect of no Trav in their midst make him and his colleagues take their defensive responsibilities on board?

Buckley... 7 Restored to the midfield and gave a performance reminiscent of what made him last years young player of the season.

Dack... 6 Not the Bradley of old but still carries the touch of class which set him apart before his injury nightmare. A much more disciplined performance position wise. Started the move of the match with a flamboyant backheel which wrong footed everybody at Carrow road...... as well as me in front of my laptop 150 miles away!

Dolan.... 7 Again a slow start to the match but after half time transformed into the player who terorrised the mighty Ajax just a fortnight ago. Rounded his performance off and put the match to bed with the second goal and could even have had a hat trick.

BBD..... See above. Nothing like enough graft in the first half but after the HT reminder of his duties grew into the game enough to prevent Hanley and Gibson building anything constructive from the back. Claimed an assist for Dolan's goal and should have seen Dolan return the favour with an assist for a sure 3rd goal.

Gallagher... 6 Again a strong man up top and up against old heads Gibson and Hanley he needed to be. Lasted 65 minutes before an injury forced his withdrawal from proceedings on 65 mins.

Subs
Szmodics (Dack 59) 6 Obviously brought on to replace Dack and provide more energy and defensive bite to the midfield.

Wharton (Ayala 59) 6 Entered the fray and gave a careless pass away, was soon skinned by Hernandez down the right but then settled into the match teamed well with Hyam and Pickering and saw it though safely.

Hedges (Gally 65) 7 Involved in lots of play from the minute he came on and can be pleased with his performance.

JDT..... 7 I gave him lots of stick for our poor performances so today I'll give him some credit. Maybe timing is important and he chose a time when the opposition don't appear to be a happy camp but must have pushed all the right buttons this past week and with his team selection for the match. It looked a little too attack minded for me to play away at Norwich but the proof of the pudding.... as they say. Used his subs well too. I still need to know how we can play so well against Norwich and yet be so poor and off the pace against the likes of Coventry, Cardiff and Wigan etc.

Ref Paul Tierney.... 5 Premier League referee no less! Generally reffed OK but most 50:50 incidents resulted in a Norwich free kick.

looks like her souffles dropped........

Superb performance from Rovers. Know Norwich's home record has been poor of late but it was still 3rd v 4th and (incredibly IMO) Rovers were going into this one under a bit of pressure.

The team selection was interesting, very attacking with Dack, Dolan, Gallagher and Brereton. So it was important that those 4 put in a shift defending from the front and I thought they did that brilliantly, pressing as a unit rather than in 1s and 2s.

The defence was solid, real captain's performance from Hyam. Been a fan of Morton for a while now but special mention for Buckley in the middle, he did everything I (and JDT from what I've heard) have been wanting from him for a while. Stop thinking you're Tugay and just playing the odd 40-yard pass, do the tackling, pressing, carrying the ball etc that we need from a centre mid.

Also a mention for Dolan, thought it was his best performance in a long time. He's always had a big heart, but I enjoyed an edge to his game last night too. And what more can you say about Gallagher, I've heard our win percentage with him is about 85% and without about 30%. His effect on the team is absolutely massive.

And a shout-out to JDT of course. Yeah we're an up and down team, but so is 95% of the league. I hope at some point when we have a down, fans start backing him rather than turning on him.
