So.... approaching Ewood we made a swift detour away from Kidder Street to Tweed St in order to avoid a throng of policemen on horses with their batons out and policemen on foot similarly tooled up attempting to contain a number of rowdy Manc hooligans seemingly intent on causing a bit of what used to be referred to 30-40 years back as 'aggro'. By complete irony throughout the match those same supporters were treating us all to their version of 'Love will tear us apart' by Manc band Joy Division from roughly the same period!
(Abbey ... Al at this point you can enjoy some proper music....
)
Needless to say when the match began 'love' was hardly in evidence from the Oldham players themselves who resembled football's version of Nazi stormtroopers. Doesn't help when a good number of the current Rover's team look like they'd need ID to buy a packet of fags! Jack Payne made his post match appearance in the Premier suite after the match to receive his watch from a 16 year old lad who actually dwarfed him! Didn't help that Jack's tracksuit appeared 2 sizes too big! Must have been a medium when Lg Boys would easily have sufficed.
I must say given that their number was roughly half their average home attendance that the support for their away mob was brilliantly coordinated and must have contributed much to Oldham's powerful first half display which ended with them deservedly 2-0 up. A casual observer could at that time have been forgiven for believing that Oldham were the team fighting for promotion and the Rovers the side threatened by the relegation trapdoor.
First up with Mulgrew up for a rovers corner Nyambe was given the task of marking Mazon with Downing alongside covering. Nyambe completely screwed up by being far too easily muscled off the ball and committing the defenders cardinal sin by letting the ball bounce, he recovered quickly enough to get goal side only for both him and Downing only to be bamboozled by Mazon again. Although Mazon undeniably did well he should never have had a sniff of the target against our two men. Worse still a fairly tame shot squirmed under Raya and hit the back of the net. Amateurish. Second goal when Mazon again strode forward after Bennett had weakly given the ball away in the Oldham half to shoot across goal and under Mulgrew's outstretched boot and Raya's glove. Again Raya made contact with the ball and again he let the ball pass by and into the net
So two down and almost out if the truth is known as the rovers had offered virtually the square root of sweet FA at the other end, The only bright spot was some spirited resistance from the midfield pair and Richie Smallwood in particular. Weird that Mowbray took Smallwood off at HT but it worked so what do I know? I did see enough yesterday to know that neither Payne nor Bell can play on the wings. They were truly awful in that first half along with Dack and Graham although to be fair the supply to them from both midfield and the wings was woeful. HT and the player's left the field to a chorus of boos.
After the interval with Bennett on the wing and Armstrong and Travis thrown into the fray to replace Smallwood and Downing Payne virtually ran the show in midfield. His second half performance being good enough to see him named MoM. They say muscular types struggle with stamina and so it proved as Oldham visibly tired the longer the game went on and as Oldham's raids became less dangerous and fewer in number allowing the rovers to gain territorial advantage and start to find space in Oldhams half of the pitch. Mulgrew drawing a respectable full length save from Placide with one free kick used it as a sighter to flight another into the far corner of Oldhams net! 63 minutes and game on! 2-1 and with Rovers lifted by the challenge Payne sent Dack clear who reached the by line before looking up and picking out the advancing Armstrong to thump the ball in. 71 minutes and game on proper! A few more minutes later Oldham were down to 10 men after Moimbe collected his second booking of the day for flooring Bennett. Unfortunately rovers couldn't find another despite playing against 10 men for almost 20 minutes much of which was taken up by Oldham's blatant time wasting. Fair play for refree Drysdale to add on 8 minutes of extra time but time wasting and spoiling tactics do always disrupt play for any team trying to chase the game.
In conclusion we appear to have the players necessary to dominate this League but Mowbray needs to find a formula which will allow them to do so. No clean sheet in the last 12 matches tells it's own story! Every match it seems currently we are giving ourselves an uphill battle. No teams that leak goa;ls as we are doing will ever be successful. As I've already said the two selected to play wing was a failed experiment and perhaps central midfield is a quandary. Bennett and Smallwood work well together but where does that leave Payne, Dack and Armstrong? Obvious here that I have written off Whittingham and Evans but there is still Antonsson, Conway until the return of Harry Whizz-bang as recognised wide men.
Up top I am confident that our best pair are Graham and I believe Dack although yesterday both were poor by previous standards . We don't have another Graham but Armstrong looks ready, willing and able to replace Dack should Mowbray decide his recent drop in form requires some R&R.
Raya.. 4 Poor. Kicking still bad. Still a weakness with long hanging crosses and yesterday his usually sharp reflexes let him down. He needed to have saved at least one of Oldhams goals.
Nyambe... 4 Off day. Oldham quite frankly bullied him. Nazon and the huge powerhouse Craig Davies proved too much and he reverted to his early season form. Rumours are that we are currently looking at loaning an Arsenal right back.
Downing.. 5 Poor and as Nyambe too easily bullied and intimidated by Oldhams strike force.
Mulgrew ..6 Best defender and scored a cracker but even he will feel that he struggled defensively at times.
Williams..5 Reverted to left back but I doubt he'll hold his place once Mowbray sorts out his formation.
Smallwood..7 Unlike many of his teammates he was prepared to go in where it hurts and give as good as he gets. Little creativity with this lad so was sacrificed at HT.
Bennett... 6 Usual energetic display of graft and was all over the pitch but blotted his copybook by giving the ball away when under no pressure which led directly to Oldham's 2nd goal.
Payne... 4 / 8 Marks here for both halves.
Bell 4 Awful match as he struggled with the wingman role Mowbray asked him to play. Second half I noticed his head was down and I was surprised he wasn't replaced by Conway when Oldham went down to 10, he would surely have provided better service to the strikers in that final search for a winner.
Graham... 5 Graham is a finisher and that's that. Shorn of service he becomes anonymous.
Dack.... 6 Currently not the Bradley Dack of a month ago. His usual good touch seems to have deserted him and he loses possession far to often. Made the goal with a great run and pull back for Armstrongs goal.
Subs
Armstrong... 7 I like this player. Superb finish for the equaliser and this lad looks to 'enjoy' playing football. Happy 21st birthday Adam! Rather surprised the Ewood crowd didn't give a quick rendition of '21 today' when he scored but there you go.
Travis.... 6 I don't share the enthusiasm of others here as yet for this lad, but he came on and gave an energetic performance albeit lacking in urgency and general 'nous'.
Mowbray...5 As I said he has the necessary tools of the trade at his disposal but he really needs to know how to utilise them to get the most out of them.
Referee Drysdale. .. 8. You rarely notice good refs is the old saying. Hardly put a foot wrong although instead of adding 8 minutes extra time he'd have been better ignoring some of the more obvious play acting or replacing them with a yellow card and also left the con men who faked injury on the sidelines for a couple of minutes rather than the usual 10 seconds or so. Whether he's allowed to do so I've no idea but it would have put a stop to the timewasting a lot quicker.
