Punctuation

Is it true or was it that at school I just didn’t listen. I’m 60 plus and I can’t ever remember being taught punctuation. I’m sure I read that education in the 60/70s went through a period of believing punctuation and spelling was not important. Could be wrong I went to shad so it may have just been us

]'m a bit of a stickler for good English but it's Americanisms that I can't stand like "no" instead of "know" and particularly "of" instead of "have". When did "given" become "gifted"?

Our English teacher would tell us off for saying "fine", as in "I'm fine". Another Americanism, apparently, but it takes a stickler to let you know about it.

We were taught it at DARWEN Moorland. What I can’t stand is no worries, without the neighbours program nobody in the UK would use that phrase.

ChatGPT and similar programs will make text speak redundant.

Drog, one of my pet hates is the pronunciation of the word "Vulnerable".
It's not 'vunrable".
I often yell out at the news readers on this one.

'Saw' is one of mine dave. A lot of people particularly scousers say 'sor'. Also there is a tendency amongst Londoners and particularly younger black ones to say 'oks' instead of 'ask', as in 'I oksed him', instead of 'asked him'.

It's not a great look for the Lancashire Telegraph reporters when they get basic grammar wrong on a regular basis. Sharpe did this regularly, but Jackson is even worse.

This morning's beauty is: "You can only effect what you can effect."

If grammar isn't their strong point (which seems daft for a reporter unless they have a genuine difficulty), can't they get someone to proof read their articles rather than letting a pedant, such as myself, read these abominations?

They are reporters rather than journalists. There is much difference with reporters regurgitating they have been told, or have seen elsewhere. Sadly most reporters these days are young people on the minimum wage. Journalism is a lost art.
