Lovely weighted pass from Dolan that. Great finish by Schmozza. Deserved that, he's not stopped all afternoon. BBD went off with what looks a Quad injury.
He looked alright walking around after the final whistle.

At last the Ewood faithful were able to sit back, relax and metaphorically light a cigar at 3-0 up until Referee Langford blew for full time with a full 15 minutes to spare! After 75 minutes Sammy Szmodics signed the game off by making it 3-0 and from then on Rotherham’s race was well and truly run. The score suggests a comfortable enough win but 5 minutes before BBD opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 21 minutes Rotherham’s Tom Eaves had thundered a shot against Kaminsky’s left hand upright. Would we have recovered from 0-1 down? I’d like to think so against one of the divisions weaker teams but the facts show that we have lost every match that we’ve gone behind in so we can only guess the answer to that.

JDT had set out the game plan by playing 3 at the back, 5 men in the middle with BBD and Gally raiding from wide up front and the team imo looked more comfortable with that. An interesting snippet reached my shell likes that Scott Wharton was told he’d be playing on Tuesday night at Cardiff only for the management have a last minute change of mind and go for a flat back 4. Despite being on the back foot for most of the first half no change was made, Wharton remained on the bench and we ultimately lost the match 1-0. Would a 3-5-2 have fared better down in South Wales? I’ll leave that for others to decide. Yesterday saw a change in line ups as Brittain and Dolan were benched whilst Wharton and Gallagher being reinstated. Brittain never saw action but Dolan sprang off the bench on 73 minutes to replace BBD and within two short minutes provided the assist for Szmodic to bang in the all important 3rd goal.

Kaminsky.... 7 Not a great deal to do but dealt with Rotherham’s set pieces well considering they had some big units on the field. Eaves being a thorn in our side when he turned out for Hull City last season.

Hyam.... 6 Doesn’t ‘show’ like Ayala or Wharton but seems a solid enough partner in defence.

Ayala.... 7 Tough guy at the back and held firm against the huge Eaves.

Wharton... 6 Made some timely interventions to thwart the Millers as most of Rotherham’s attacking came down their right hand side and Pickering was placed under constant pressure in the first 45.

Hedges... 6 A useful game but he needs to settle into the role being asked of him as his marking was a little sloppy at times as was his seeming reluctance to advance wide down the right hand side.

Travis... 7 Constantly in action to break down Rotherham’s build ups.

Morton... 8 For the first time I saw what this lad is capable of bringing to the party. Peter Jackson’s MoM and mine too. Some delightful play and passes with a few Tugayesqe back heels and flicks as he dumbfounded Rotherham’s middle men. He was fouled for the penalty as he raced through to collect Pickerings through ball.

Pickering... 7 Showed up for pace a couple of times but defended well overall and was a threat going forward.

Szmodics... 7 I was told by a disgruntled old head at HT that (even!) I was a better player than Szmodics.... but that was before he made the second goal for BBD with a pin point cross and scored the 3rd from Dolan’s pass. I don’t think that we have seen the best of Szmodics but maybe he has made his name playing of a more traditional big man up top? Neither Gally nor BBD are that man so have we bought a pig in a poke?

BBD ... 6 Again not at his best but a well struck, confident finish from the spot (own up!.... who closed their eyes and held their breath?) and a second goal from Szmodic’s cross showed his value to the team.

Gallagher...5 A lot of effort but little end result with most things he did.

Subs

Dolan (BBD 73) 6 Great start as his effervescent running created the third goal for Sam Szmodics within a minute and a half of coming on. Could have had a goal for himself as Rotherham’s spirit faded.

Hirst (Gallagher 80) 5 Sensible to give him a run and restore confidence after THAT penalty miss but apart from a lovely exchange of feet didn’t influence matters much.

Mola (Pickering 80) 5 Little cameo but not a great influence on the match.

WhartonA (Morton 87) N/A Probably brought on to allow Morton a round of applause just before FT.

Dack (Szmodics 87) Ditto .... See Wharton above.

Manager JDT... 7 Sent out a team in a formation to do a job and it worked. Might be best advised to be less of a tinkerman in future and trust a settled squad to bring home the bacon.

Referee Oliver Langford... 7 Blown hot and cold in recent appearances at Ewood but I prefer Refs to be seen and not heard like this chap.

A fair review for the most part that and I must admit when I see those three big lads at the back I am very relieved. BBD was class yesterday though.
