It's OK there but the beers deer...... or do I mean the bears dear?
Subtle nuances of the English language again. The pronunciation of Sean Bean is another.
The deer is beer. Come on Gordon, get it right.

For a better pint you cannot beat the Nabs Head at Samlesbury.

Really Pink? I always view the Royal Oak as a traditional winter pub. All hearty food and crackling log fires. A much better summer pub might have been the one up the road on the canal that burned down a few months back. Alternatively the Butlers Arms has good facilities in nice weather.

I keep meaning to book The White Swan at Fence. Northcote rivalling cuisine apparently but at normal gastropub prices. Trouble is it's always booked up by the time I decide to go so maybe there is a message there.
Top review from the Gruniad too.

Right well it was our anniversary last week so I attempted to book The White Swan for Thurs evening only to be informed that it was one of their 'Great British Menu' evenings. I was told that this was the last of a dozen such evenings and they were fully booked. Two minutes later the lady rang back to say that if it was only a table for two that they could squeeze us in. Now a set 4 course menu at £75 per head (£100 with a wine flight) seemed pricey and was an obvious (but totally forgivable) attempt to capitalise on Chef Tom Parker's appearance on the telly imo. I've no problem with that btw as I did watch the show when he was on, but the cost was higher than for the normal evening menu of course. Er indoors thought it was to pricey but what the hell the kids have flown the nest (btw my lad went to School with Tom I understand), mortgage repayments just history and with the clock running down .... bugger it, we'll go!

I'm so glad we did! A 'Wimbledon' themed menu which imo is just unnecessary and something twee for the telly but which contestants have to go along with. Anyway each course was absolutely superb, so well cooked and so full of flavour and so complementary to the other courses. I'm not one to be over gushy in praise of such but this is deserved in this case. The selected wines complemented each dish perfectly and the coffee was to die for (mental note to self... phone and ask em what beans they use). Only one change that I would make would be to ditch the oyster in favour of an extra langoustine or similar on the 2nd course. But then I would say that as oysters are not really my cup of tea. Suffice to say £200 of an evening and I considered it good value! Money well spent even. Which may I say is completely out of character from my normal..... '"200 quid!!! ???? "I couldn't eat that much in a bloody week' response to such suggestions.

Just as an aside the premises themselves were well decorated according to the character of the building and spotlessly clean. last but not least it seems much effort must go into staff training as every person there was friendly, helpful, well versed and eager to please. If they had actually owned the place I don't believe they could have worked harder and served any better. Top marks for the White Swan for that. It's just attention to detail that so many other establishments fail to recognise.

*If you want I think you'll be able to watch the GBM on iPlayer or some such catch up channel. Winner on the night was the scouse chef from the Marram Gras on Anglesey which I am booked into dine with a party of chums in October.

** final point re: the 200 quid evening. I saw an old aquaintance from way back who came over for a chat. Says he dines there a lot and fancied the GBM evening. But then he'd be able to... worked his entire life in the Town Hall and retired years ago. Pensioned up to the gills and all on the back of the private sector tax payer! Gav you'd like this place.

Went to Cheshire Oaks last week but then had lunch in a pub in the centre of Tarporley. Never eaten in a major retail outlet since I discovered (Trafford Centre) that the only option is halal.
First time for quite a long time I went on Blackburn market last week and was surprised (and miffed) at the number of halal food outlets. Anyway I ordered a bacon sarnie and whilst waiting was looking at some of the dishes on a 'greek' food outlet on the next counter (stifado / kofte etc). I got into a pleasant conversation with the chap behind the counter who asked if I'd like anything, I said 'most of it, but I won't be eating it because it's halal meat'. We continued chatting so I went on to ask why Greek food was halal and he informed me that he was actually from Kurdistan! Turned out that he was from Northern Iraq but prefers to call it 'Kurdistan' (no wonder the Iraqis and Turks etc dislike the kurds so much is it when they live their but won't acknowledge the mother country is it?). I said him 'what passport do you hold then'? and he said British but before then it was Iraqi. No idea how all that worked but I see that as just another example of the low regard that the followers of Islam hold the rest of the world in as they continue to spread their culture across Europe by what are effectively methods of stealth. We are so tolerant that it's small wonder that this country has become such a league of nations and home to all manner of folk is it?

Is it not easier to take his sh1te to the landfill rather than dump it at Nelson football ground? I don't get it?

I used to regularly see mattresses dumped on Broken Stone Road (back of Oyster and Otter Bburn) in the lay bys, I'm sure Gordon has to, is it not easier to take them to the dump? rather than risk fines dumping in the lay bys?

Businesses get charged a lot more for waste disposal than private householders. That Yusuf Jan Virmani was sussed when as Mayor of Blackburn he was bubbled for backhanding the local bin wagon to chuck waste from his 'conference centre' on Audley into the wagon rather than pay the going rate.

I once discovered in the region of 15-20 black bin bags of rubbish dumped down a bridle path near my house. A quick bit of detective work revealed the culprit had a business just off Accy Road and lived at one of those new housing estates near Chester St. Police not interested and told me to contact the council, council didn't appear interested either . I was preparing to load it up and dump it all on the lawn of the property when the council to their credit phoned back and informed me that they had investigated and had spoken to the chap concerned and forced him to remove it. His defence was that he claimed that he had paid 'someone' to take it to the tip.

If you can't afford to throw away your own cr@p then find another line of work, its a disgrace to dump bin bags down bridle paths, or mattresses in lay-bys, winds me up.

I'm afraid that there is going to be a lot more fly tipping around Hyndburn now that the council have sent out letters saying that they will not empty the green garden waste bins any more unless we pay an extra £30 per household for the service. I will not pay it on principle.
Yesterday a guy from the council was going around posting stickers saying "There is still time to pay the charge for emptying your green bins". My wife asked him if he knew what the uptake was and he replied "Hardly any". I'm not surprised cheeky bastards after what they charge us for Council Tax. They actually make money out of compacting garden waste and selling it as compost.

My garden area is in excess of an acre yet I've never ever used my Brown bin Al! (well actually I do use it but only to store wood for the two wood burners that we hardly ever use in the house.) I have a dumping area where the larger tree cuttings and autumn leaves go, a compost heap for vegetation that will compost, and my lawnmower is fitted with a mulcher.
