York Away - pre season

York started brightly but were clearly unfit. They even caused a few problems for our defence in the first 15 minutes. We looked really fit, Graham looked like a new man. TM is clearly looking at a squad to last the rigours of the season. The only weak link was Steele, he did a woeful punch out and his ball distribution was equivalent to Abbey wearing a blindfold.

Haven't seen this lad Caddis so it's prob foolish to comment but this lad sounds like he might not be the best defender but his strength is in attacking as an overlapping right full back (poss right winger, where did he play BB?)
Mowbrays type of full back I'd suggest. These guys are fine and can be dangerous as we have seen with Price, Hird, Bailey and Le Saux, but they do need a winger who will drop and cover when they go forward. Not sure Feeney is that man unless Mowbray can get inside his head.
Reading between the lines there may be possible doubts over his fitness and commitment as both Rowett and Zola chose to overlook him. Rowett basically reported as telling him to get fit... or else. Seems to have been popular with the fans but could be a John Bailey type perhaps?

EDIT I've just read this.. http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.u...s_set_to_offer_Caddis_permanent_deal/?ref=mac
Seems my spidey senses aren't failing re: his level of fitness.
Best bit is that Mowbray appears to be 'on it' regarding squad fitness levels. "8 am Fat burning club" before the other players come in for training! Bloody good news and good psychology! Sacrifice accompanied I'd assume by a little ribbing and humiliation from their teammates for the tubby ones! I've commented plenty about this as I only had a few players down last season as actually being truly 'fit for purpose', (namely Lenihan, Lowe, Bennett and Gallagher)! Coyle was the reason imo and it appears Mowbray shares my opinion and won't stand for it. Should make a massive difference to the likes of Conway, Graham and even Evans. Only diff with me is that I'd have had the 'Fat Club' after training and not before. I guess it matters little. Well done TM.

Drog: Caddis played in right midfield covering the RB position and providing both pace and decent crosses (how long have we needed these) to feed the forwards. Yes he could do with losing a bit of weight, he is rather short and does remind me of John Bailey. He did seem to be enjoying his football and appeared to have a good rapport with the other Rovers players.

Nothing to get carried away with last night but the positives are: a clearly increased level of fitness overall; team spirit; top class and deadly finishing whatever the opposition; the makings of a squad who should be challenging for promotion.

I hope that doesn't come around to bite you on the arse BB.

btw John Bailey was a super overlapping full back but I was led to believe he was a renowned 'ale can'.

Met John Bailey up at the Cavendish in the late 1970s . He was with Stuart Metcalfe on a night out . Seemed to be a sound guy and had plenty of time to talk to us fans . Like you say Gordon he was a fantastic overlapping full back and with Kevin Hird at right back , they both contributed to what was an outstandingly entertaining team . I think Waggy might have played in the same team too

Loved watching that Rovers team, Bailey and Metcalfe were spotted several times up the Cav, Metcalfe was a bit reserved Bailey always had time for word with the fans.

Funny how times have changed isn't it? Nowadays they'd be all over social media and criticised for being up late.

Courtesy of YorkCityTV there is now a full copy of the game on Youtube.

One camera, no commentary but has crowd noise and very watchable.

Just watched the highlights by flicking through the full game suggested by ARA.

Some nice tiday football, particularly by Dack and perhaps surprisingly, Feeney. Looks like Mowbray very much wants the full backs involved in the attacking play. Maybe due to the weakness of the opposition, but Caddis looked like he was playing Right Attacking Mid for most of the game.

Best goal - Caddis' 2nd. Nice build up play followed by a lovely assist by Dack and a super finish.

On to the next one!

He does.... it's what he admitted we were doing at Norwich when we were 1-2 up with minutes to play v 10 men when we got caught out by having the full backs still overlapping and attacking when we should have been solid at the back and running the clock down. 2 points chucked away which would have seen Brum relegated instead of us.
