This is a massive derby for me , not as massive as with that lot , but massive all the same . I attended Preston Catholic College for 7 years from 69 -76 and had a couple mates who supported PNE . I remember walking past the LEP shop window on Fishergate in May 1971 , looking at photos of the night they beat Rotherham 3- 0 , to go up to Division 2 and replace the Rovers who went down . They had 27,000 plus on Deepdale that night . Not a good year to be a young Rovers fan , with a Rovers shoulder bag , waiting on their brand new bus station for the Ribble bus back to Clayton . .
Preston are a weird club . In Sir Tom Finney they had arguably England’s greatest player of all time , but have won next to nothing in their history. Just two league championships and an FA Cup in the 1880s and then an FA Cup in 1938 and I’m afraid that’s about it . Incredibly its now 60 years since they were in the top division . Probably the biggest club ( population wise ) when compared with Rovers , Burnley and Blackpool , but like their trophy haul , their crowds have always been pretty average . It probably doesn’t help having their ground so far from the centre .
The town ( sorry the city ) isn’t famed for its footballing passion but they have loved a day out at Ewood in recent years with impressive followings . Sadly for us they’ve had lots to celebrate since the rivalry resumed in 2015 , with 3 wins and 2 draws .
So a big test for the top six , young , Rovers on Saturday . Kaminsky’s injury couldn’t have come at a worst time . PNE had a decent home draw against Fulham last Saturday in front of a dire crowd of 9,800 ,well it was a bit windy and on telly to be fair . They’ll probably bring at least half that many to Ewood . I’m hoping this time they’ll go home empty handed , cursing that they let us have the dazzling Dolan for nothing and marvelling at the transformation in Chile’s homeboy and ODB’s hero Ben Brereton - Diaz . Well he did tell us he’d come good , didn’t he ?
It’s time The Famous Blue and White Halves humbled Proud Preston at Ewood.
Up the Rovers
