The Famous Blue and White Halves v PNE

This is a massive derby for me , not as massive as with that lot , but massive all the same . I attended Preston Catholic College for 7 years from 69 -76 and had a couple mates who supported PNE . I remember walking past the LEP shop window on Fishergate in May 1971 , looking at photos of the night they beat Rotherham 3- 0 , to go up to Division 2 and replace the Rovers who went down . They had 27,000 plus on Deepdale that night . Not a good year to be a young Rovers fan , with a Rovers shoulder bag , waiting on their brand new bus station for the Ribble bus back to Clayton . .

Preston are a weird club . In Sir Tom Finney they had arguably England’s greatest player of all time , but have won next to nothing in their history. Just two league championships and an FA Cup in the 1880s and then an FA Cup in 1938 and I’m afraid that’s about it . Incredibly its now 60 years since they were in the top division . Probably the biggest club ( population wise ) when compared with Rovers , Burnley and Blackpool , but like their trophy haul , their crowds have always been pretty average . It probably doesn’t help having their ground so far from the centre .

The town ( sorry the city ) isn’t famed for its footballing passion but they have loved a day out at Ewood in recent years with impressive followings . Sadly for us they’ve had lots to celebrate since the rivalry resumed in 2015 , with 3 wins and 2 draws .

So a big test for the top six , young , Rovers on Saturday . Kaminsky’s injury couldn’t have come at a worst time . PNE had a decent home draw against Fulham last Saturday in front of a dire crowd of 9,800 ,well it was a bit windy and on telly to be fair . They’ll probably bring at least half that many to Ewood . I’m hoping this time they’ll go home empty handed , cursing that they let us have the dazzling Dolan for nothing and marvelling at the transformation in Chile’s homeboy and ODB’s hero Ben Brereton - Diaz . Well he did tell us he’d come good , didn’t he ?

It’s time The Famous Blue and White Halves humbled Proud Preston at Ewood.

It sounds like our ticket sales for this game are a disaster. If Rovers fans don’t turn up they deserve a middle to lower Championship club at best.

PKE sold less that 3k and are looking at around 4K on Saturday unless they have a late panic rush by their plastic fans.

Without Kaminski I'll go for 2 - 1 for Rovers. I don't accept Preston as rivals although they would very much like to be. Same goes for Bolton and Wigan. Only Burnley are worthy of that honour.

Xmas is coming ,what I here on the radio the Preston manager is not popular. If they brought 7k they most probably outnumber the Rovers fans😷😷

Hang on a minute pal, im sure that their ground is a lot nearer their town centre than ours? Their problem is that they are traditionally a small lower league club with little aspirations and ambitions who used to be famous a couple of centuries ago. Most football fans in that town therefore support a bigger club not far away from them in Merseyside or Manchester, and indeed us in the 90s! To be considered as rivals in my book they at least should appear to be our equal, that definition has never fitted pke.

Like Al posted, we only have one set of rivals now.

I must admit I was quite impressed with PNE against Fulham with Mcann in midfield catching the eye and Ched Evans coming on late to bully them although his goal should not have stood.
Without Kaminsky I don’t think we’ll keep a clean sheet so am going for a score draw.
Rovers 2 v PNE 2

Understood and agree . Burnley are the big rivals , I know that , not least because I come from a split Rovers / Burnley family . However the PNE derby is massive to me because I spent 7 years in a Preston school .

Talking generally, I love a good old fashioned Lancashire cotton town derby more than any other game , be that ( and I’d like to include Stanley but haven’t for obvious reasons ) Burnley , Preston , Bolton or Blackpool , the latter not a old cotton town but you know what I mean . There is a shared history and a local pride to these games , the black and white photos of our heroes gone by , from Harry Healess , Bob Crompton , Ronnie Clayton and Bryan Douglas . I’m not as up on the old stars of our neighbours , but Matthews , Lofthouse , Mcilroy and the best of the bunch ( so I’m told ) Sir Tom Finney , that’s not a bad list .

I don’t think we should forget our history and where we came from and discount these iconic Lancashire derbies as just another game . They’re part of our DNA . Give me a Rovers v Blackpool or a Rovers v PNE any day of the week over a Rovers v Liverpool or Man Utd .

Just on your point about Deepdale ODB , I think the fact that it’s way out of Preston town centre in the way Ewood is a good walk from our town centre doesn’t help the crowds , the community attachment or in Blackburn’s case , the pub/ hospitality trade . Burnley have an advantage there , just a hop , skip and a jump from their centre to Turf Moor .

But no one lives in any of the town centres.🤔. Car parking and easy access is more important these days, Hence my long standing gripe about the vacant land at the back of the riverside especially given it's proximity to the m65.
