Hugely disappointing defeat but fully expected
When it came to the crunch this England team didn’t have what it takes

Nothing to do with skill, technical ability or pace , this talented bunch have that in spades .

What Southgate failed to instil in our lads was the right mentality , patience and game management ( yes , including the dark arts ) Unfortunately whilst he remains in charge , we’ll be behind teams like Italy , Spain , France or the next up and coming country .

If he decided to resign tomorrow would any of the top twenty clubs in Europe take him on ? Not a chance .

We do need to rem that we didn't actually lose did we? The weakest link imo was in the centre forward berth and right wing. Whether Kane can find a place in the hole or whether he is dropped altogether we do need a pacy out and out striker for the world cup campaign. Names to conjure with are Rashford, Calvert Lewin, Ings. Bamford or Watkins. Personally I'd take them in reverse order! Supplied by Sterling down the right and Grealish down the left.

Seems my initial thoughts posted in my review are gaining momentum. How come he didn't learn from the defeat by Croatia? 'Every day is a school day Gareth'!
Euro 2020: 'England must be let off the leash to end glorious failures' - BBC Sport

"There was an ominous similarity between the defeat by Italy and that loss to Croatia in Moscow, an early goal but then momentum lost, retreating into the shell, conservative, failing to gain possession.
Italy dominated 65% possession at Wembley and, once their nerves settled after an early England onslaught, they looked by far the more accomplished side, as befits a team now on a 34-match unbeaten run.
Southgate also exercised caution with his substitutes, not using Jack Grealish until the 99th minute when England cried out for a ball carrier to at least regain some initiative."

and

"And there was the penalty strategy, which involved throwing on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford with seconds to go, stone cold into a shootout with barely a touch of the ball and then both missing a penalty.
The selection that raised most eyebrows was Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, the 19-year-old who came of age in Euro 2020, taking the final penalty in the shootout knowing the hopes of a nation rested on his young shoulders."

Speaking of my thoughts ... is it too much to hope that should we get to the later stages of future tournaments that the English press and media show some decorum, be much more sensible in their comments and articles and be much less jingoistic. Whipping the non followers of football up in to a frenzy is just pathetic. I can only assume that most of the garbage and drivel that they came out with is intended for the Under 14's and their Mothers!

There was nothing whatsoever wrong with Rashfords penalty apart from being three inch too far to the left. If it had gone in we’d all have been saying what a brilliant penalty! The other two penalties that we did not score were purely great saves by the keeper who guessed correctly. When he goes to PSG let’s see how much the transfer fee is, I bet it’s a world record for a goalie. That’s an indication of how good Donnarumma is.

Let’s not forget Italy just scraped by us missing two penalties themselves. Overall the lads and Gareth did great, he certainly seems a perfect fit for the job. Since he took over there has been a steady improvement so let’s see where we are in the next World Cup.

Onwards and upwards gentlemen.

I said before the final 'lets hope it doesn't go to pens, because that bugger will look massive to our penalty takers'. And so it proved. Well done to Pickford for saving two but I really do not like people having a stuttering run up and trying to be too 'clever' with penalty kicks. More often than not it ends in tears. Maguire's pen was the pick of the bunch and I'd quite like Southgate to have seen in training if the players could master Paul Gallaghers technique. That would have been the best antidote to Donnarumma's psychology.
No mind games here.....

Another one to agree with me! Big Al too! Harry Kane hits back at Alan Shearer after England star criticised for Italy performance (msn.com)
Honestly I can only assume that Southgate and Kane must have learning difficulties after falling into the exact same trap as they did in the World Cup semi's.

I see some goons have started a petition on that 'Change' web site for Gareth Southgate to be knighted! Kinell! Talk about rewarding failure. Poor old Sir Alf will be spinning like a top somewhere.

Kane reckons England were in control despite Italy comfortably winning all major match stats. Deluded.

The penalty debacle excused by the cop out 'penalties is penalties' - Thats London for 'penalties are penalties'.

All of my Boro supporting mates, of which there are a few, said he was a dreadful and clueless manager at Middlesbrough.

Sure ODB, but he missed it and that is all what counts. When you see the penalty it’s easy to see that he is over doing it. He is thinking too much and trying to find out what the keeper will do. I assume it’s easier for the keeper if he sees that the penalty shooter is unsure what he will do and then just follow him instead of taking a chance. A real poor penalty if you ask me.
