Bet my Dad was at Finney's last match WB. A staunch Rovers fan he still went to Deepdale when the Rovers were away just to watch 'Sir Tom'. Lots of folk did that or went to Burnley / Bolton, back then my future in laws who were equally staunch Roverites went to Burnley every other week. Changed a bit now hasn't it? I recall Tom's (rather early) retirement was the talk of the day for anyone who came to our house.

btw anybody spot Fergie in that wheelbarrow when he was still at stanley?

I had a mate, who unfortunately, very recently died. He was a Burnley supporter and for a time we went to Rovers and Burnley home matches on alternate Saturdays. Things were much friendlier in those days. We had many a discussion as to the relevant merits of Duggie and Jimmy Mac.

He'd have it wrong no doubt.;)

My old fella loved the genius of Duggie (in fact he named dog named after him in '58 before Mum and Sis over ruled him and insisted he was called Timmy) but he always insisted Tom Finney was the best player that he had ever seen. He did also say later in the 60's that the nearest talent to to Sir Tom was Besty.

If I put my Rovers prejudice to one side I have to agree with him. Finney was a complete footballer who could play both wings, no.10 and main striker equally brilliantly.

That's what my old man said. Said he was way in front of Matthews in that respect too.

Great stuff OOT.
Can't believe how many people were packed into that stand on the photo of Finney's last match.
Is that their Kop ? Almost every old timer I spoke to , be they Rovers fans or them down the M65 , always rated Sir Tom as a more complete player than Mathews .

My proudest schoolboy footballing moment was when I captained Preston Catholic College 5th form team to victory in the Lucas Shield at Deepdale . Sir Tom presented me with the trophy and shook my hand .

The week before we’d hammered St Mary’s College , minus Mick Duxbury , not sure why he wasn’t playing . Always enjoyed beating SMC ( almost as much as St Theodore’s, Burnley ) and enjoying the banter with a few Accy mates who played for them 😀

That's cos they were a part of the community. Many were from this area and Rovers players frequently used to travel to Ewood on match days on the bus. Nowadays they train at Brockhall behind closed doors, not on Fenny Rec or Pleasi fields, live miles away in a fashionable area and drive in in fancy cars. I think I noticed 17 year old Harvey Elliot getting out of a Range Rover on that video of the new boys. Wonder how much his insurance is? On second thoughts it's prob on a fleet policy negotiated by Liverpool.
