So I'm going to be positive here and repeat the old saying.... If you can play badly and win then anything is possible.
Now for the negatives, Rovers certainly played badly and the records will show that they won but this was leaving it mighty late and will not continue to be repeated. Barnsley came to press high and make us play our neat little triangles in our own half. It worked and it's quite obvious that Millwall and Rotherham had their scouts at that match and have emulated those tactics. I can imagine the scout's notes to the coaching staff... "Let the Rovers play their passing game around our box at your peril, but press them back and make them play pretty triangles in their own third of the field and they will oblige"
Now we have been sussed Tony Mowbray has a major problem to solve, we can compete toe to toe with the better teams even though we've not had the rub of the green BUT how can we put spirited but lowly opposition to the sword for max points without fluking it in the dying minutes? Just a re-cap it was a 78th minute winner v Barnsley, a 91st minute winner v Millwall and today's 97th minute winner disposing of Rotherham. Plain fact of the matter is that we aren't as good as we think we are, and we are in danger of being viewed as a one trick pony team. With so many subs allowed we have to find a good Plan B (and a Plan C) and pdq!
Kaminsky.... 5 Made no saves of note, was strangely hesitant at times in coming for the ball and the forward pressing game of Rotherham nullified his game as our 'keepersweeper'.
Nyambe ... 6 Typical strong game going forward but has to take responsibility for Rotherham's goal. Was standing with Rotherham's Crooks as the ball was fed through but for some reason didn't even compete. I'd put that down to the age old defensive sin of ball watching.
Lenihan... 5 Somehow Darragh has lost his dominance at the centre of defence. He was suspended for one game but has hardly come back with a bang has he?
Ayala .... 7 Mixed fortunes tonight. Was involved a lot in thwarting Rotherham's attacks but at times struggled with their physicality. Should have been 6 but one point for his dying seconds determination and assist for the winner.
Douglas... 4 Poor match and from what I can see a poor defender to boot. Small wonder LUFC fans didn't appear bothered that he was to be loaned out. Has a great free kick delivery on him but we didn't see it tonight and without that Barry is pretty ordinary and although it's difficult to imagine seems even slower on the turn that Deggsy.
Johnson... 5 His worst match of the season. Didn't compete strongly with Rotherham's midfield which is precisely what was needed and actually he helped their game plan. I'd assume that the run of matches every third day is taking it's toll, it's a tough ask playing in midfield for a chap of his age and build.
Buckley... 5 Chance to impress and didn't take it. A few nice touches isn't enough and he was taken off for Holtby. Lets be honest whilst he will probably turn into a quality midfielder for us I can't ever see him weighing in with many goals from that area.
Rothwell... 6 Looked most likely to create something for us and capitalised on yet another poor touch from Gallagher to move forward and put in just about our only worthwhile effort of the first half, which was well but quite comfortably saved by Johansson in the Rotherham goal. Mowbray needs to use his ball carrying ability to more effect. Again it's no good him doing it in our half, Joe needs to be picking the ball up at the edge of the centre circle from where he can do most damage.
Elliott... 7 Some nice touches but like all our strikers was isolated, received poor service and was of little effect until he was picked out by a quick pass from Adam Armstrong in the 80th minute when he turned to strike an unstoppable drive across goal and into the far side netting to give the team some belief and to ignite that extra time surge from the team. I keep banging on about supplying forwards quickly and turning the defenders around and this was the perfect example. Whatever people say about Harvey he certainly has a quality left foot and doesn't seem to score ordinary goals does he? Queue more trees cut down so the Liverpool Echo can print more guff about him and whip the locals up into a frenzy.
Gallagher... 4 Showed improvement of late but tonight was back to his worst form. Defensively careless and poor in attack. His first touch was non existent. I lost count of the number of times that he lost possession. A poor match and poor touch can happen to any player, no player knows whether they are going to have a good game or a poor one at kick off. The mystifying thing is why Mowbray left him on until the 89th minute.
Armstrong.... 7 Plenty of effort over the 90 mins but mainly (and commendably ) spent in chasing down back passes etc. Suffered from a marked lack of quality service from his teammates and was left picking scraps. I think TM needs to tell Adam to wait until he's crossing the 18 yard line before he shoots as he is trying to hit the ball too quick, too hard and ends up scuffing his shots. BUT He struck like a Cobra in the 97th minute for his goal. A quick eye, a short back lift and bang.... pick that out!
Subs
Bell (For Douglas 60 mins) 7 . An immediate improvement on Douglas and played his part in swinging the balance of play and at last providing some sort of a threat from the left.
Downing (Rothwell 60 mins) 5 Rather a surprise here as I fully expected him to replace Gallagher. Not really prominent until he lofted the cross in to the back stick (from Gallagher's position) from which Ayala set up Arma for his 27th goal of 2020.
Holtby.... (Johnson 68 mins) 7 Came on for the strangely subdued Johnson ( was it Derby County's Christmas party this weekend?) and immediately injected some quality and constructive play into the proceedings. Louis hasn't been at his best of late so it just goes to show how losing a place in the opening line up can galvanise some players.
Trybull... ( Buckley 68 mins) 6. Settled the team down a little and plugged the gap between our defence and our midfield that Rotherham had been exploiting. To be fair though Rotherham after going ahead in the 61st minute had lost a certain ambition and decided to back peddle, tighten up and run the clock down. Thank the Lord they failed. Sometimes justice can be poetic.
Dolan... (Gallagher at last..89) 6 Plenty of effort in his little cameo and his presence did a little to push Rotherham on to the back foot, but to be fair to the lad Mowbray should have had him on for Gallagher much earlier. So poor was Gallagher's first half that he should have been pulled anytime from 55 mins on.
Tony Mowbray... 4 Poor game. Has to thank 'Arma the Cobra' for avoiding howls of criticism after that performance. Rotherham imo were nothing special and resembled a top 8 League 1 side but TM has to find a way to get his team to play against teams utilising this high pressing tactic, and sooner rather than later. His starting X1 looked OK but didn't gel and were getting outplayed. Why he delayed his substitutions for so long only he will know. In his defence our number of late goals recently do illustrate a very positive squad attitude to never give up until the final whistle. How different from a couple of years ago when we lost loads of points in the last 10 minutes of matches. Has to be pointed out that tonight we used one of our 'get out of jail' cards and in any one season there aren't too many of those going spare.
Referee Jarred Gillet 6 This is the 5th time we've had the Aussie in the last two seasons. Last time was the last minute home defeat to Nottingham Forest so this is karma I guess. Does let quite a lot of 'hard but fair' challenges go which other refs might blow up for which I quite admire. I watch football to see the footballers perform not the officials.
