Rovers v Pool

Barmitzvah Boy

Global winner of the 2021 Christmas Quiz 👊🤩🤩
An excellent performance this evening. Hyam, Travis and Britain were immense. Dolan and Smozdics were also excellent.

The misses from the two subs Morton and Vale were criminal; they would have killed the game off and the BBE would have erupted.

As for Gallagher he needs a session on Blackpool beach with his brethren.

An enjoyable evening and a wonderful Dolan goal celebration.

No wonder we won! Blackpool didn't have one shot on target all night. In fact their best two efforts are shown on BB's link to Sky Sports above, and they are disgraceful. Thanks btw to Agent Poveda for directing his clear shot on our goal to the far corner flag! Once a Rover eh? However no one can be comfortable being just one goal to the good and especially against clubs from the lower reaches of the Championship and this was our second nail biter in 4 days! Why do the Rovers do it to us? The gulf in class was obvious most of the evening as the Rover's pass masters outplayed Blackpool's commendable huff and puff effort and spirit. I've no idea why McArthy elected to leave Lavery and Bowler collecting splinters but he did. The pair of them did at least ruffle a few feathers in the otherwise commanding Rover's defence when they were introduced to proceedings.

As for the Rovers we have a keeper who is keeping clean sheets behind a strong defence which in turn is behind an adequate central midfield in which Travis whilst not firing on all cylinders is still putting the effort in and crunching into tackles when needed, whilst John Buckley's influence and creativity is growing by the week. Providing width down the left was our "play anywhere, Jack in the Box" Dolan who was desperately unfortunate to see Maxwell save one blistering effort destined for the top right hand corner at full stretch before hammering home his next attempt a few minutes later. Down the right is new loanee Thomas who in his own half is nowhere near good enough to partake in the Rover's intricate passing play, but put him in an advanced role on the right, into the final quarter and he is getting hs name on the assist sheet with some regularity. Do I think he is good enough? I'm not convinced. Do I even think he is better than Markanday who we shipped off to Aberdeen to make way for him..... I'm afraid I'm not convinced about that either. The jury is still out on Sorba imo.
Suffice to say the goal was created by a fast break leaving Dolan unmarked to thrash the ball home. Time and again I insist speed deceives and is the enemy of any defender. Why we constantly attack and then prat about playing triangles and slowing the play down just outside the opponents box is a mystery to me. All it does is give defenders, pressed onto the back foot by a quick break the time and space to 'organise themselves and mark up'. When we won the Prem Ripley and Wilcox were under orders to go down the wing with the ball and when they reached the corner of the box not to look up and telegraph their intent but to simply cross the ball toward the penalty spot where you know who would be waiting after pulling back, getting a shoulder in front of his marker and timing his run in. Any height worked. Simple and effective, not rocket science, not perfected on a chalkboard, just players following instructions and getting 'used' to each other. We all know Gallagher is no Alan Shearer of course, he came from Southampton and any comparison ends there. He'll never be fit to lace Shearer's boots but lets be honest we are in the Championship not the Premier league.

One change at HT precipitated by Ayala getting injured after tangling with the spiky Irishman Shane Lavery (If Bpool go down I wonder if we could table a cheeky bid for him?). He's a scrapper and a nuisance for defenders along the lines of Speedie and Dickov and imo a team should always find room for one of those as they can motivate the rest. The rest of the second half saw Blackpool huffing and puffing to try and get back in the game (which as we all know is always possible with just a single goal margin) with the rovers content to pass around before attacking at pace in the hope of finding a sucker punch second goal. Only profligate finishing by our attackers let us down and prevented this being a comfortable stroll on Ewood Park.
FT 1-0

So 6 points in four days can't be all bad and so it's off to QPR this Saturday who have just appointed Blackburn born ex Rover Gareth Ainsworth as their new Manager. 🙄 Why on earth do we have to put up with new Manager bounce again? Saturday at Loftus Road will be the 8th time that we have played a team that has just changed their Manager this season alone and which will be raring to go and profit from the 'new manager bounce' effect.

Pears ... 6 Difficult to give him a score when Blackpool didn't have a shot anywhere near to being on target for the entire 95 mins. Pears was mainly used as a sweeper as the Rovers defence played across the back... and back again... and back again. Spooned the ball a couple of times as he attempted to clear in true Raya style. But as Raya is currently attracting rave reviews in the Prem it seems kicking can be worked on and improved. I just wonder why we didn't improve that aspect of his play.

JRC.... 7 Not the usual full back but he's a converted midfielder in essence so he does wander a bit. Seems to have recovered from his drop in form but I'll put that down to the injury which sidelined him for so long. It's entirely possible we rushed him back too soon. Form is temporary, class is permanent as they say.

Ayala... 6 Stood up well for the first half before limping off at HT. We'll have to wait to see how bad his injury is.

Hyam.... 7 Strong performance all evening to thwart everything Blackpool could muster.

Brittain... 7 Sponsors MoM. Did well on the left side even when Bowler came on in the second half although I noticed we were well aware of his threat and doubled up on the Forest loanee.

Travis.... 6 Still not the Trav of old and seems to have lost a yard of pace and stamina but still the enforcer in midfield.

Buckley... 7 A much better performance from John than of late and sprayed numerous passes with invention and creativity. Still prone to losing concentration and spoiling his play by making a few unforced errors.

Dolan.... 7 A livewire throughout. Boundless energy and his running is as strong late in the game as it is in the first minute. Scored a cracker and was unlucky not to score two with an even better shot before the first one went in. He's a box of tricks but rather guilty of a little showboating which is a complete no no with the score at 1-0. Will a fully fit BBD dislodge him if he continues playing like this on the left? I just wish JDT would tell him to stand in the centre circle when the opposition are taking corners just so that they will have to keep 2 players back to mark him.

Thomas... 6 A mixed bag again. One minute he looks lower league standard, the next he's claiming an assist.

Szmodics... 7 Replacing the in form Dack can't be easy and whilst he never displayed Dack's creativity and awareness he played a part by covering lot's of ground either making himself available for his teammates or more impressively harrying the opposition into mistakes and limiting them any chances to build from the back.

Gallagher.... 5 Plenty of effort but just does not possess a strikers instinct and I'm sure never will do. One instance in the 2nd half saw Buckley (I think) play a wonderful pass into his path .... except Gally wasn't clear on goal as he should have been .....in fact hadn't even bothered to set off!!

Subs

Carter (Ayala 45min) 7 A top performance in that second half. So good that Ayala was hardly missed. We are indeed fortunate that the Mowbray's influence on the Academy has produced such defensive quality. There can't be many clubs that have produced 3 CH's so young and promising as this lad, Scott Wharton and Ash Phillips.

Vale (Gallagher 78) 6 Only a 15 minute cameo but played a part in running down the match.

Morton (Szmodics 78) 6 I think Szmodics' batteries must have been running down as he's not played 90 minutes recently. Missed a 1 on 1 to finish matters when he elected to shoot with the wrong foot and sent his chance wide of the far post.

Hedges (Dolan 89) N/A Another who when presented with a glorious chance to sew the match up found the ball on his wrong foot and instead elected to flick it to ma colleague in a worse position.

All 3 subs had glorious opportunities to notch and didn't take one of them. Might I suggest shooting practice this week for their 'swinger' feet?

JDT... 7 Sent out the team in a better frame of mind than for the Swansea game, but in fairness Swansea are a better team than Blackpool.

Referee Dean Whitestone...7 Kept the game flowing and generally got most things right. However I'd like to see the challenge on Dolan again which he deemed a dive and a yellow card. Brittains booking was a little harsh whilst Buckley's was completely right as he took one for the team by hauling down a Blackpool player who had got away from him. Other than that he seemed unwilling to caution any of the Blackpool team throughout the match.
