Great win again, won 26 quid on my bet, that'll pay for my ticket on Saturday.

Don't like to make my mind up about a player too quickly in a negative sense, but sometimes it only takes one game to make my mind up about a player in a good way. I got that feeling about Adam Wharton when I first saw him in the second half against Stoke and I got the same feeling tonight about Jake Garrett.

WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE, SAID WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

COYB.

Someone near me was singing a funny song based on ‘Simple Simon Says’.
It went:

”Tony Mowbray says put your hands on your head
Let your bank balance stretch”

Brilliant finish by Diaz.

If Brereton had been better with his decision making in the 2nd half we would have been home and dry on 75 minutes. His distribution and ability to hold onto the ball were both poor.

Mind you………that goal 👏👏

The future is bright.... the future is Blue and White!

What a wonderful advert for Championship football it was last night! Especially as the Sky TV’s usually witness a woeful game and an unsatisfactory result for the Rovers. No less than 9 out of the 18 man squad of the Rovers players were Academy / Youth products! How many times have I been able to say that since the early 1960’s? Obviously the venkys deserve much credit for financially supporting the Academy so well and for so long. `Our Cat A status Academy is the only one out of the Premier League and is increasingly expensive to support so we do need to use and/or sell players from it to maintain our position. I just hope the FOC situation with players does not wreck the whole shebang. We aren’t on the very lucrative Premier League nipple so we do need to profit or at the very least balance the books. With so many youngsters electing to sign for the fashionable clubs there will always be lots of drop offs of disappointed kids with their (and their parents) dreams shattered looking to sign elsewhere and what better place than the Cat A Academy at BRFC? We must be the natural second choice for most of Northern England. Long may it continue as I know from experience that many kids develop at different speeds and the later maturing kids can come through by the time they are 21.

Last night’s match isn’t all down to the Rovers though, Sunderland played a massive part and in truth would have won on another day. It wasn’t a penalty imo as Hedges clearly nicked the ball away but as the old saying goes ‘I’ve seen em given’. So when BBD struck that wonderful shot we could have been 0-1 down and taking a kick off. Even more fortuitous imo was Wharton’s flicked header. From my seat it appeared that Hedges wickedly flighted free kick had gone straight in and only slo mo replays revealed Wharton’s contribution, however imo he was in an offside position when the kick was taken! Both teams nevertheless had Tony Mowbray’s stamp on them and were an absolute credit to him. Fast one touch intricate football with no sign of any play acting, diving or histrionics of any sort. Maybe the evergreen (he’s still only 29) Pritchard should have been chided for waving an imaginary yellow toward the 4th official after a first half challenge from Morton but I’ll let it pass and put it down to his legacy from his time at Spurs. I’ve given up going to away matches but I might just make an exception for our trip to Sunderland, it promises to be a Boxing Day cracker.

Kaminski... 7 A calm and assured performance. He seemed to be in the right place and waiting for every Sunderland attempt on goal.

Carter... 7 Another good showing and it’s fair to say Ayala wasn’t missed and that is some acclaim.

Hyam... 8 Ran the show from the back as the temporary Captain. Good choice by JDT.

Wharton.. 6 Not his usual self and his passing was a taj suspect. Got a nick on Hedges wicked cross for our second goal.

Hedges... 7 Turning into Mr Utility man although I do question why we had a left footer on the right and a right footer on the left. Could have had a worldie right at the death with a blistering shot from the half way line which had Patterson in Sunderlands goal beaten all ends up but crashed against the outside of the RH post.

Brittain... 7 Struggled a little through the first half as he was frequently left in a 2 on 1 situation by a combination of Wharton and BBD in the main allowing Slands wide men to literally pick their spot.

Szmodics... 7 Much more like it. In the thick of it from the start and no doubt with confidence boosted after Saturday Sammy at last showed us his ability.

Garrett... 8 Will Trav get back in so easily never mind Buckley? Played an excellent part like he’s been there for months and named Peter Jackson MoM.

Morton... 8 Oozes Premier League quality on occasions. Seems to have so much toime on the ball. I trust when he goes back in the Summer that he will find himself in the frame for the first team as Elliot did. Btw Harvey was there last night which is good to see. He’s turning into a regular Rovers fan.

Gallagher... 7 Put himself about and somehow see3ms more enthusiastic that we have seen him in the past. Any player ‘enjoying’ their football inevitably have more to offer.

BBD... 7 What an enigma. A wonderful and instinctive shot with his ‘swinger’ for our first goal and yet a match littered with good things interspersed with amateur errors. As Sland threw more and more bodies fwd he should have had another goal or two to his name or at least a couple of assists. It was not to be but another time such profligence will be very costly.

Subs

Dolan (Szmodics 78) 6 Never really got into the game but tbh it was being played at a hell of a pace.

Vale (Gallagher 78) 6 Ditto. Unlucky to be given offside once when imo he was a yard ‘on’.

Manager JDT 7 A surprise squad named withy Dack and Buckley but who can jib at the match and the replacements performances? (Don’t answer that Al). Got most things right in the end.

Referee Craig Pawson..6 I was just thinking this is the best Ref that we’ve had all season when it all went wrong for him. From the 70th minute on he made incredibly (imo) one eyed decisions in Sunederland’s favour. Still no harm done and he can wander off back to the prem after a decent nights work.

Great summation Drog, I'm not sure the Sunderland fans would agree with you about the ref, You would have thought he robbed them of a 5 nil win the way they're carrying on. You win some you lose some with the decisions over a season and in truth I don't really think VAR has changed that opinion, we still get loads and loads of debated decisions every Saturday on MOTD. Stick with the old system and keep the spontaneity imo, but that's going off topic.

Thought maybe Hedges deserved an 8 but other than that I agree with you totally. Great write up as always.

Hedges was absolutely knackered at the final whistle having run himself into the ground, what a player.

He was a Rovers fan on the wind up. Would've been a lot better if he'd have revealed that top after we scored. School boy error.

I watched this again and it's still not clear at normal speed whether Wharton got a touch. I think the clincher was that when the ball hit the back of the net the linesman genuinely thought (as I did) that it went straight in and was also persuaded by our players who imo were fooled too as they all ran to congratulate hedges! Maybe if they'd rushed to Wharton instead that goal might not have stood!🤔

Spot on there. I’m on the Riverside as you know and I thought it went straight in.
