Well as far as I am concerned justice was done in yesterday's late 1-0 win over Swansea. I don't mean justice in the football sense because Swansea imo were worthy of a share of the points, but justice in that BBD look alike Russell |Martin has turned them into a niggly, cheating, diving, timewasting outfit far from the attractive passing team that they were a decade or so ago. I lost count of the times they went down far too easily and earned a free kick by playing on the naivety of Referee Thomas Bramall. A strange Ref this chap, one minute waving play on and the next blowing up for a foul for an identical offence.
First half the Rovers weren't at the races as Swansea bossed the play without really presenting much threat in front of goal other than a thumping header from Cabango which crashed down from the underside of the bar and rather fortunately ended up in the safe hands of Stephen Pears on the 15 minute mark. With the Rovers seemingly pressing the suicide button it seemed a matter of time before Swansea went into the lead. A few more scares and the Referees whistle brought the first half to an end.
What went on in the dressing room and whatever tweaks JDT implemented worked as the Rovers came out for the second half and immediately took control of the match. No personnel changes and yet the same X1 who were so abject in the first half came out and immediately pressed Swansea back. The change in performance was so marked that it wasn't until the 73rd minute before JDT made a substitution, in fact the substitution the Rovers fans had been wishing for as Bradley Dack was brought on for the desperately ineffective Gallagher. 5 minutes later and Hedges was sent on to replace Brereton Diaz who had been almost, but not quite as ineffective. Poor old Bradley came on and immediately injected some creativity and class into the Rovers build up play before succumbing to injury and needing to be replaced by Szmodics just 13 minutes later. Just 3 minutes later and as the match seemed destined to petre out to a 0-0 draw Hedges took a pass from Buckley, whipped it across the 6 yard line. Gallagher and BBD were then put to eternal shame as the Rover's Centre half Hyam got a touch and the ball bounced across to his partner in the centre of defence Ayala to head the ball firmly home and snatch the win. What our 2 centre halves were doing up there with the score so precariously balanced I can't say but I'm definitely glad they were.
Pears..... 7 Kaminsky must be a worried man as Pears is currently making a strong claim for automatic selection.
Carter.... 7 MoM according to the commentators and I shan't argue with that.
Ayala.... 6 Not at his commanding best but scored the winning goal so who am I to crib?
Pickering... 6 Slotted in well although taken on the outside a few times.
Travis..... 6 Lots of effort and application from Travis but little creativity. From my seat he appears to have lost a yard of pace since last season.
Buckley... 6 A few nice touches and good control but John is another to have slipped back a little. Nearly screwed up by losing the ball late on in a dangerous position. With Morton also appearing to be a little off his game it goes a long way to explaining our pursuit of O'Brian.
Dolan.... 7 Fizzed about the attacking half of the pitch but without success. Pity we can't bottle his endless enthusiasm and energy and give his teammates in midfield and attack a dose of it at 2-30 every week.
One thing puzzles me though. Why does he go back to defend opposing corner kicks? He's about 5ft 4" and will never be able to compete in the air, yet yesterday I saw the entire Swansea team plus gk in our box for a late corner. Surely simply standing Dolan on the half way line would have forced Swansea to keep a defender and the GK back to mark him?
Gallagher... 3 Awful showing! Clumsy and ineffective whose usual second touch has become a tackle! 5m and very highly paid is just laughable if it wasn't so tragic for the club. Since Danny Graham hung up his boots and Adam Armstrong left for Southampton we've had a number of decent seasons but always just missing out on the play offs. Just imagine what a difference a proper centre forward would / could have made to our fortunes. Worst bit is we all knew he was crap when he came! I'm sure opposing centre halves will just love playing the Rovers with Gallagher up top.
BBD... 5 Did see plenty of action in the second half after being almost totally anonymous until after HT, but little came of it. Another waste of 6m imo as 1.5 decent seasons out of 5 isn't good enough for a club where money is in short supply. The best comment that I can make is that at least he has improved his game unlike his strike partner above.
Substitutes
Dack.... 7 (Gallagher 68) Did show that he thinks a yard in front of anyone else in blue and white. Unfortunate to go off injured after just 13 minutes.
Hedges... 6 (BBD 78) Didn't catch the eye but did provide the cross for the winner. Another who seemed to be playing better in the Autumn.
Szmodics... N/A (Dack 86) Was at least on the 6 yard line when Ayala headed home).
JDT.... 4 Such a poor first half! Whatever his preparation routine is for the team it needs reviewing as the Rovers simply were not at the races until the second half. Are there no decent centre forwards in Denmark looking to break into English football?
Referee... Thomas Bramhall 5 Mixed performance. Did try to let the game flow but inconsistent with his decisions. Blowing up one minute for a foul and then waving play on for a similar offence a minute later. How we ended up with 4 yellow cards to Swansea's 2 considering all their niggly spoiling tickets I'd like to know from him.
