Rovers v Swansea

No one shoves Nyambe off the ball and he's quick that's for sure but as I've said in the past when managers talk about the first yard being in the head of a great player our Ryan is two yards behind that man. His crossing is feeble and hardly ever results in a goal. Best thing he can do is aim for the pen spot most of the time and leave the rest to the forwards rather than trying to pick out a colleague.
Agreed I think he’s a player who probably thinks he’s better than he really is. Hence the contract situation we have with him. If these lads don’t want to sign up, we shouldn’t be playing them at all.

Another for Rothwell 😳 i thought he was one of our poorest players. Funny game football! Kaminski was great though il watch the goal back as my initial thoughts were his positioning was poor at first and got wrong footed for the goal despite getting a touch to it.
Rothwell terrorised Swansea in the first half and then did fade after the break. No doubt Martin adapted his tactics to deal with him at HT. After watching Quest I noticed that Benda actually saved Rothwell's 'dink' or it would have been 3-1 and game over. Credit to Benda for that but I still believe BB could have got there with a flying lunge rather than trying to stay on his feet and running out of room.

Something I did miss out is why Nyambe was being faced with 3 players, 2 Swansea attackers and Paterson the midfielder who scored for their goal! Where were our midfielders who neglected the golden rule to 'get goal side' of their opposite number? What happened to their awareness? Questions need to be asked about that one when the highlights appear on all those tellies installed at Brockhall.

Having just watched the highlights I bet you wouldn’t have put that one in either!
Probably not ODB..... but then again you need to factor in that it's 35 years since I hung up my boots.
Back then I'd have left the ground and lunged at it feet first. He only needed to get something in the way of it and it would have gone in.

That reminds me. Something else I noticed on the Quest clip, BB's first touch was very poor for Gallagher's goal. A better / stronger first touch and he'd have scored himself.

One thing that he really lack is the “killer instinct” as a striker. His work rate is good and he has few tricks up his sleeve but that last thing to put the ball behind keeper with a good shot is missing. If that can be improved I think he could become a real decent striker.

Nyambe solidly defensive as ever but I think we can seriously upgrade on him. I think he’s really poor going forwards, he’s yards behind everyone else mentally and reading of the game. He’s never kicked on In my opinion his constant lack of ability in the final third in regards to delivery and overlap means I’d happily take an offer for him tomorrow given he’s another contract offender. JRC is the better player.

Ayala looked decent bar being wrong side of the lad in the first half which should have been a Swansea goal.

Not seen a game in a while with as many blocked one on ones as that.
I disagree on the really poor going forwards. For patches of last season he seemed the only player capable of beating a man. He's only got one trick, kinda setting off then dragging the ball after him with his left foot, but it was very effective at times. Bit inconsistent yeah but for a club heavily in debt and likely to be cutting the wage bill over the next few seasons, I think he's definitely better than anything else we could realistically get.

I agree. Top strikers need a mixture of devilment and determination and the desire to cut the throats of the other team. The need to score and prove they are the best has to burn in them. Shearer had that in spades!

Great post and mostly agree bar Rothwell. Thought he was really poor and barely noticeable all game.
 I was doubting my sanity until I readthe local press.........

Good reports by Jaquob Crook in Lancashire Live. He gave Joe Rothwell top marks and I agree with just about everything else he wrote on the match.

and

Five ups and one down from Blackburn Rovers opening day triumph over Swansea City - LancsLive

Plus an 8 from Rich Sharpe in the Telewag ratings.

Funny how we think ain’t it. I thought bar the first ten to fifteen he wasn’t really involved too much.

Oh just remembered! Another gripe at the strip. There needs to be a white panel on the back for the numbers (and names), or they need to be in a strong yellow or similar. I can't ever remember them being as indistinct.

Of all the games I’ve seen Rothwell play, I thought yesterday’s performance was his best and most influential by a long way.

His 'special' ball carrying ability is really special at this level. We need him to stay. Key man imo.

Absolutely, on his day Rothwell is another level. If he can do it more often he could easily be our best player this season.
Don’t think anyone doubts his ball carrying technique I actually think he’s faster with the ball than without it. As ever it’s consistency and another contract rebel

I think I'd probably be a contract rebel in this day and age. I'd certainly want to keep my options open given the rather low salary that he's reportedly on. His ability demands more I'd suggest. I'd want to have a great season for the Rovers and then get my agent to find a better paying club for me.

It's a good job we won,I thought everyone played well and the future looks blue.
They did. Ratings in both local rags reflect that.

imo It was a heartening performance given the doom and gloom currently being spread about by the BRFC 'faithful' regarding Armstrong leaving, no new signings, purse strings being pulled tight, gripes at the manager (despite our woeful managerial experiences of the past 10 years), Brockhall development, the Ewood pitch, Development personnel leaving etc etc.
Don't we all love to spread misery eh?

My argument though as much as I think your spot on there is these contract rebels should not be playing for us at all. We’re better than being used as a shop window. No player is bigger than the club.

Every player and any agent worth his salt uses some club as a shop window these days. We can't afford to make such a principled stand Dunnfc. I'm sure that a list of all the players in the last 12 months of their contracts would reveal that every club has 'mercenary' stars eager to cash in on the Freedom of Contract rules since Bosman. It's a professional game remember. I'm surprised that this sort of thing has taken so long to become so widespread.

I once recommended way back over the road that we buy NO player for a fee but offer top wages instead attached to 12 month rolling contracts with buy out clauses. I got pelters too from the less err imaginative and businesslike shall we say over there. However we'd have a queue of players wanting to come here when their contracts run down elsewhere, players eager to strive and play well to stay on top earnings and hopefully a more successful club. The err.... black man in the woodpile to that system is the skewed financial nature of this division owing to the clubs on parachute payments.

Just back home after a couple of days away. Well done Rovers, the crowd sounded up for it as well 👏👏

This YouTube ‘clip’ posted by Rovers is followed by a multitude of comments from Chilean fans of BB-D. I might start selling a few knock off Rovers shirts (manufactured in sweatshops from China and Leicester) by mail order to Chile.

Inquest time........... Interestingly on 1 min 21 of that video and just before their goal Gallagher is pointing at Paterson obviously having spotted him unmarked in a dangerous position. He should have got goal side of Paterson and then bollocked the midfield when the danger was nullified.
