New coach for the defence? That must have been a people carrier so that the defence don't travel home from away fixtures with the rest of the squad.
btw I've just googled "
defensive coach blackburn rovers" and it's brought lots of unhappy memories flooding back from the dark recesses of my mind where I'd banished them. Kean, Hendry, Winterburn.... None of em were any good and all saw us as a meal ticket.
I don't know whose coaching them but I'm pretty sure that they need binning off. I seriously doubt that I could do any worse. Some of the basic mistakes would be ridiculed down at Plessy Fields on a Sunday morning!
It's funny but I see a lot of what we were instructed to do years ago being coached today by Pep Guardiola ..... and he appears to know what he is talking about. His
'win the ball back in 7 seconds' rule is just an extension of Shankly's
'when the opposition have possession we should have 11 defenders' which Kenny Dalglish so successfully brought to the rovers.
Man Utd under Fergy had a similar work ethic as the class of 92 readily accepted that there was no 'i' in team. In fact those lads even though they are retired still do today.
Cloughie's
"it only takes a second to score a goal" should be painted on the dressing room wall at Brockhall! Fact remains that none of those teams were known for giving the ball away cheaply.
All this is as old as the hills of course but much of it appears to have been ripped out of current coaching manuals. One odd thing that I do see with the rovers is that for all the ricks that various players make there seems very few on field 'bollockings' handed out. I don't particularly like to see such discord but the Rovers players too often just appear to shrug their shoulders and trudge back for a kick off.
My 1st move this summer would be too bin off Leutwiler (because if he can't shift Raya out of the team then he's not up to much) put Raya on the bench and replace him with a 'proper' keeper. One who dominates and organises the defence in a strict fashion. I believe that Raya's timidity and inability to dominate his area is the root cause of our malaise despite all his eye catching reaction saves.
After sorting the keeper any defender which Mowbray want's to replace is fine by me, with the exception of Darragh Lenihan. Obviously Mulgrew's left foot is a fantastic weapon and I'd be reluctant to lose his goals and his build from the back distribution but he is getting older and perhaps more injury prone so i'd imagine he's only 1 more season at this level in him. The only proviso to keeping Charlie would be to replace every full back on our books in order to protect him by stopping crosses coming in so frequently. Williams and Nyambe are one or two divisions out of their depth whilst Bell has the ability but not (as yet) the 90 minute concentration required.
Get that sorted and maybe we could dispense with the need for two deep sitting midfielders and look toward getting a few goals from that area.
