Souness interview

Last night he also said it was a mistake leaving Rovers. He spoke well last night if not a little squiffy - he had a go at David Dunn at the end which was a bit naughty.

I know he hated DDs lifestyle and that's why he sold him but would love to know if he said more

He said DD would not listen to him and that if he did he would have made him a great player. DD was more interested in playing from box to box and dreaming of scoring so he could celebrate in front of the fans when he should have focussed on being a holding midfielder.

He left us at the right time as I recall as he had started to go a bit silly.

I rem when we were promoted posting over the road that they should sit Dunny down through the summer at Brockhall and make him watch old videos of Souness at Liverpool and in the next room have Bent watching old vids of Ian Rush. Imo it wasn't skill Dunny was short of, in fact he had more than Souness in that dept, his problem was between his ears. Souness was ambition, pride and determination to be the best midfielder in the game personified. He made his career happen whilst Dunny waited for it to happen. Big difference.

The impression I always got with Souness is he gives it to players straight. That's a management style that just doesn't work in the modern game with the ego of players often now in their early 20s earning £100,000+ per week (and often several times more than the manager). And because of the financial swing towards players, they also know that they can gang together and force a manager out if he isn't nice enough to them.

Some players, Friedel, Tugay, Flitcroft, Martin Taylor, Dickov you could tell loved Souness and he got the best out of them in their whole careers. Others, Dunn, Yorke, Cole etc didn't. Hate to say it but I do think the latter group were more the prima-donnas.
