That was absolutely diabolical. We have lost our quarterback and have no idea how to play without him.

Al it’s more than that. We have lost our attacking play and despite sticking five at the back we still lost. Oh and we were boring to watch too. Early days I know and we have to give the new manager a chance with a few coaching sessions but I wasn’t impressed at all last night.

Couldn't bring myself to write a player review last night. Here it is, and some other reflections.

Pears
Had another decent game except for the moment of madness trying to pass it with his left foot and gifting it to the Birmingham attacker. He should thank his lucky stars it came to nothing.

Brittain
Got down the wing quite well but awful, defensively. Was outdone too many times and was a real weakness in the team.

Hyam
Difficult to notice him when we were packed in numbers at the back. Seemed to be a bit more vocal, which probably helps with having his best mate alongside him.

McFadzean
Lack of pace was exposed once. Did well to put off the player in the second half in what should have been an easy goal.

Chrisene
Absolutely awful. Slow on the ball. Poor passing giving the ball away cheaply. Didn't win his tackles. Worst player on the pitch and needs dropping against Preston.

Rankin-Costello
Wasn't in the game much. Didn't notice much of note. Injury looks like it's just an impact one, so hopefully back for the Preston game.

Tronstad
The best of a bad bunch, though not one of his better games. Did well to put the player under pressure who Pears gifted the ball to. Got stuck in more than most.

Hedges
Nothing of note. Still getting into the swing of it.

Szmodics
Barely saw the ball. Had a decent chance when played half-through in the second half, but his shot was feeble.

Dolan
Barely saw the ball. Seemed to run around a lot and mucked in defensively, but couldn't get into any sort of attacking mode.

Gallagher
Barely saw the ball. Didn't win many of the aimless long balls up to him.

As for the subs...

Garrett
A smart yellow card to pick up, but forced into it by suicidal passing out from the back. Didn't get into the game much.

Moran
Nothing of note.

O'Riordan
Looked confused at passing out or booting it up the pitch.

Sigurdsson
Almost got an assist at the death with a flicked on header to Telalovic. Nothing else of note.

Telalovic
Criminal to miss the point-blank header at the death. If he can't score that, he's never going to make it at this level.

Overall, it was an absolute eyesore to watch. Our plan was to stodge up the game and frustrate Birmingham. You could argue we did that with a lot of lady luck, but then it's pretty much game over if they eventually score. While the long ball was great to see for our goal against Stoke City, we shouldn't just do that all game. We need to control the ball more and play directly but smartly when we can. That never happened last night.

The positives? Well, there aren't many, are there? We moved up a place to 16th. It was only 1-0 rather than 4-0. The pattern of our previous style could easily have seen us lose a miserable Tuesday night away fixture 3-0, as we so often did. I didn't think the players gave up, but our style gave us nothing to cheer about. I don't mind us doing that, but we have to be much better at it.

In fairness to Eustace, he's barely had any time with the players. I think he will get the players more closely-knit, and that could be crucial, but supporters will start to get on his back early doors if we see the same type of performance on Saturday. Not sure what our ticket sales are like for that game, but I can't see us selling out based on last night's performance. We could be onto a hiding if Preston smell blood on us.

Telalovic just doesn't possess a strikers instinct imo.
