Some good points and to be fair that is all we could see, what we cannot comment on is what they really talked about behind closed doors. Time will tell I expect.
Exactly. That was just a show for the press.
Now I'm not looking for excuses for Trump for anything he's said in error or otherwise ultrablue but at 72/73 he's had a week (month if one includes his tour to the far east and Korea) that would have reduced many men in the prime of their lives to a state of exhaustion. It's been one hell of a punishing itinerary. Like playing in the World Cup final.... you might be awarded MoM but you'll have misplaced a few passes, tackles, shots through the 90 minutes.

I'll put this up:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/17/opinion/trump-putin-republicans.html

It's a good piece with many salient points, but for me, it's the comments.....

OK Steve, he's an east coaster, but you are all Americans. There are some deep divisions appearing, you would have to agree, because of Trump.
Having said that, he has changed the world order, and, to be honest, that's not a bad thing to happen.
The article is full of mistaken assumptions. It boils down to this- what does apology get for Trump? Nothing. The liberals will use it as an admission of guilt and his base doesn’t need it.

What does confrontation get Trump? Nothing. Presidents have confronted Putin for years with no change in behavior. Short of war, confronting Putin will change nothing.

Trump is a pragmatist. He has a lot of information I don’t, and if I can see that following the advice of the NYT, etc, gains him nothing then I’m fairly sure he sees the same thing.

Totally agree with that. I think liberalism is becoming some kind of cult. Hate the centre, DESPISE the Tories, abhor UKIP and "KILL THAT SEXIST RACIST WHITE SUPREMACIST PIG TRUMP!!!!!".

Its so extreme these days that debate is becoming pointless and compromise impossible. Trump should just do what he wants, pandering to the left will make him zero friends ever.

Agree with Steve & Blue&White .

In fact seen this on a twitter account recently and it neatly summarises the whole Liberal/Left lot :

Someone has different views to you ?

Do you:

Get hysterical ?
Get abusive ?
Get intolerant ?
Invoke racism ? ( if the cap fits wear it BenJimJohn )
Wallow in self righteousness ?
Signal your virtue ?
Make your kid carry a vitriolic placard on a protest ?
Look & act like a moron?

Yes?

You’re suffering from Leftism

Can you add 'post your outrage social media' too. You're right we are in center free politics at the moment, if someone sets up a common sense centrist party they could storm into power.

Weird that all the comments above fall back into the safe space of blamimg 'lefties'.

But condemning Trump's performance in Helsinki is about the most centrist position there is. People of all political stripes have pubically condemned Trump for rolling over for Putin and then offering an even more pathetic attempt at an excuse. Next to nobody is standing with him on this one save his most blinkered surrogates.

He messed up - big time. Pure and simple. He may be too old, tired, and too stupid to hold the office as Drog suggests - in which case he needs to resign before he does something even more dangerous.

Hard to disagree with much of that, did you see the melinia video?

Period pains more like? Going through the change possible too? I guess we'd need to know the details in her pre nup contract with Donald to know whether she's contracted to smile all the time when standing next to him or just when the cameras are on her.

Anyway Posh looks like that all the time ..... without the smile.

Trump not a happy camper:

To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

I thought Trump might have something to say when the Iranian President promised him the "Mother off all wars" a couple of days ago.
I seem to remember someone called Saddam making the same promise once.
