Wovers v QPR

Chuffed for Travis. Feel like defensive midfield is the least understood position by the average fan and therefore players there seem to get the most stick (Lowe, Andrews, Reid before than Wigan screamer, Atkins etc).

Felt like the criticism of Travis was starting to build last season (madness IMO, our only natural leader) so the odd screamer can't hurt.

Thought Travis, Buckley and Hedges all did well and any as MOM would have suited me
Pricks near me were moaning about Vale, it pissed me off big style - what do people expect - young kid - first start!! Fucking Clowns!!
He did seem to lose a bit of confidence after getting clattered and the pace and strength of seasoned pros takes a bit of time to master
He will do well
Hedges makes some great, intelligent runs
My only gripe was Brittans reluctance to swing it in - I wonder if its a confidence thing, or an orders thing, but he spurned the option on numerous occasions, it reminded me of our reluctance to take a chance last season. With some real targets in there today it had to be worth taking a chance.
Early days though

Oh and Thunderstruck at Mach 11 was superb

Very good win and excellent start for Jon Dahl Tomasson and the players today.

We set up in 4-2-3-1 formation with Vale up front, Gallagher right, Hedges 10 role and Brereton-Diaz on the left but one of the things we witness was movement and moving inside and allowing the full backs to be the wider players in the team. Jon Dahl Tomasson has a clean way he was us to play and this is work in progress but good start. Some good nice and quick one touch passing today.

Travis scored a great goal and he was good today. Buckley shown class in the 8 role and show his passing quality and his tackling was one of the key thing in our victory. Hedges was good in the 10 role and my man of the match. Played the role well.

Kaminski did everything well and the back 4 was mostly solid. One of two positional of the centre backs wasn't right. Brittain was very good at right back. Pickering was ok but needs to do better going forward for me.

Pleased Vale started and he had a good game. Some good touches and movement. Also He shown great awareness to run back into midfield and cover for Buckley when he was down after a collision with Dickie in the penalty area.

Interesting we only 1 sub today but JDT didn't bring Dack as fans wanted him to and The players look fitter and quick then last season.

Plenty to go forward with for JDT and the team. Looking forward to the Swansea away game and I will enjoy this win tonight.

COYB! JDT's Blue and White Army

Well 3 points is 3 points toward the approx 45 point safety target so the result was a relief in that respect. However it was far from a barnstorming opening to the season which should have seen an average QPR side easily swept away. The shape and method of the Rovers did rather perturb and certainly disappoint me.

1. Long ball after long ball from defence up to four tightly marked forwards virtually within touching distance of each other is NOT the way forward in this league. That is the tactic of park football played on a quagmire pitch rendering short crisp interchanges nigh on impossible. Were it not for Travis's thunderbolt I feel this match would have ended in a 0-0 stalemate because of the dearth of chances created. Ok so most would know that we were always going to miss Joe Rothwell's ability to carry the ball forward at speed, putting opponents on to the back foot and introduce a level of panic to defences, or indeed Khadra and Dolan's trickery and unpredictability. Rothwell's skill sadly was most missing today. Also largely missing was much of the crisp passing interchanges of last season until midway through the second half.

2. Width. Where was it? With no one creating space for the other forwards by hugging the touchline our attacking play came to a halt in a bottleneck of players as outlined above. Worse still with all that space down the flanks both full backs seemed strangely reluctant to cross the half way line with any sort of attacking intent.

If we are to finish above half way this season all concerned will need to take a long hard look at this match on all the plethora of screens down at Brockhall this next week.

Kaminsky... 6 A decent performance let down by some poor distribution and a couple of errors of judgement and application that on another ....day might prove very costly. Why he didn't shout KEEPERS BALL to Scott Wharton in one incident when both went for the same ball I have no idea. It's a goalkeeping basic!

Brittain .. 6 A decent enough showing today which I'm sure will improve once he is more familiar with his teammates. Needs to show more attacking intent.

Ayala... 8 Strong performance in which he and Scotty W virtually snuffed out any threat from QPR's front man Lyndon Dykes and kept QPR's attacking stats to 0 shots on target and 0 corners

Wharton.. 7 See above.

Pickering... 6 Tested early on and was struggling somewhat as most of QPR's attacking was down their right wing. Reluctant to venture fwd on a number of occasions. We all know that he does possess attacking instincts so was this down to a one off or instructions to stay back from the new Management team?

Travis... 8 Absolute blinder of a goal from the Rovers new Captain. Thank goodness he did find that shot or two home points would have been frittered. Combative in midfield as ever and left a few 'calling cards' as he softened up opposing midfielders. He, Buckley and the defence did well to keep QPR's precocious creative danger man Ilias Chair quiet.

Buckley... 7 Decent match without the normal creative influence that we know he is capable of. Probably crowded out by the narrowness of Hedges, Vale, BBD and Gallagher leaving him no space to work with or carry the ball into. Spent a lot of time on defensive duties and was booked in the first half for a clash as a result of temper after being flattened by Dykes and Referee Bramall giving no foul. It left Buckley walking on egg shells for the rest of the match. Dykes btw joining him in the book which was odd as he was booked for a foul which he had not awarded at the time. Work that one out if you can. Bramall's report should make comical reading.

Gallagher.... 6 Put himself about and gave plenty of effort but again hampered by the close proximity of his teammates.

Hedges.. 6 See above re: Gally. Must say I was rather surprised to see him play the full 93 minutes.

Vale.... 6 Started well and looked lively but suffered as the two above from lack of space, faded in the second half and was replaced by Dolan on 64mins.

BBD... 6 Did good and bad in fairly equal measure. If there were scouts watching him today I don't think he showed enough for any to recommend a 20m investment to their bosses. Scored a disallowed goal that should have sealed a 2-0 win in the dying minutes but had thoughtlessly charged forward into a (way) offside position to meet Dolan's cross. Why tf a professional player should have done that in that position when he could see right along the line is virtually unforgiveable!

Sub

Dolan (64 mins for Vale) 7. Came on and immediately unsettled the QPR defence with his trickery. Faded a little as the forwards were left to work off breaks rather than periods of attacking pressure. Was unlucky to miss out on an assist through BBD's amateurish error.

Manager Tomasson ... 5 Not the best performance for the opening game. Early days but he needs to send out a better balanced team at Swansea. Just one man in midfield with any sort of a tackle in him and any number of forwards virtually holding hands and throttling attacking intent will not bring home the bacon often enough!

Referee Thomas Bramall 7. We've only had this chap once and that was our loss at Hull City away last season. He's never been to Ewood and after a shaky start when he booked Buckley and Dykes he settled into the match. He could have sent off Buckley for a second offence but chose to deliver what must have been a final warning rather than a second yellow and the match was saved as a spectacle for the 14315 in Ewood Park. Seemed to get most things right for the rest of the match.

(So odd that so many elect to pay on the day when a ST would offer so much better value.)

And maybe if Rovers had adopted the flexi season ticket as suggested more would commit - times are fucking hard Drog (maybe not in your world?)
Not everyone can afford to risk £400+ in these bizarre times - we are a Chris Whitty press conference away from social Armageddon whilst some of us are working for minimum wage on zero hours contracts

Thunderstruck was tremendous, just a shame it wasn’t in stereo though. That’s the kind of music to get the crowd going. Oh and Mach is a measurement of speed not aural volume. I’ll shut up.

He did ok yesterday and imo he was a bit better than Gallagher who once again had one of his many poor games on the wing.

I appreciate that point steve but with tickets at £25 plus then the going the entire season would cost almost half as much again. A shared ST with a relative / mate might be a good option to support within a budget? It's prob all going to end in dodgy boxes though. Football faces lots of challenges going fwd doesn't it?

@Drog, you thinking we should just be surviving this season? woah

I don't disagree on your rating on JDT and comments on his performance. to be honest I think you are being bitter cos Mowbray has gone and we played well yesterday. We have a clear tactical plan and style of play under JDT. Maybe allow that to be implement and time is needed

On the width point, well if you seen pre match and read about how JDT played at Malmo where the full backs provide the width and how we set up yesterday. The front 3 and number 10 use movement and are allow to roam unlike under Mowbray.

We have agreed on this for years and it does feel like the previous years greed is finally coming home to roost at club level with the fans getting sucked in by prices and general life costs
I get what you are saying - I have had a season ticket home and away for many years but football days aren't just about the game
A lot of people have "social" expenses attached, especially with kids in tow. Not having a ST at Ewood is not as big a deal as at clubs where it is about securing a seat
My working life is (and has been for the last few years) chaotic and fraught with lack of security so not having a ST feels a little liberating - if other life issues need precedence they can be given it
Heating and Food are more important than an afternoon at Ewood

I think that most seasons chaddy. Get to the safety target asap and then set a new one. I guess my opinion was formed by experiences in the Prem and especially after Jack died.

One game down and we appear to be lightyears behind the Dingles 😯
Most relegated teams have a top half finish the first year down. See how Burnley fare when financial realities have taken their toll. They are a vastly changed team at present. Plus Huddersfield are now out of the parachute payments, and because I was told last season that they are in deep financial trouble they have off loaded a number of their better players.

I've seen allot of posters here and twitter mentioning Vale having a decent game. I thought he was really poor and way of the level needed if I am honest. Kept running into blind allies, Had to be told more than twice to close down, Lost the ball a few times by not looking up. Didn't seem to have anything of a redeeming feature e.g. pace at all.

Early days though isn't it? Maybe it was him that was cramping BBD, Hedges and Gallagher.
