What can I say? Really proud of that performance. Supporters were excellent. Heard loud and clear, and out-sung the nauseatingly repeated "seven and a half thousand Newcastle supporters" on the Beeb.

I'll write a player review in the morning.

I've always hated the Humbugs, even more so since they got taken over by the ISIS brigade & Mary Shearer Poppins is a massive cunt too.

Magnificent effort from everyone in blue and white tonight.
Scott Wharton was immense all game.
I had a feeling Hyam might miss but as captain he stepped forward and showed courage for that.
What a great watch and great atmosphere generated by the 22,000 crowd.
A lot of those players proved their critics wrong tonight and I can’t fault any of them.
I hope the injuries to Gallagher, Wharton and Szmodics aren’t too bad. The latter 2 seemed innocuous but Gallagher was his calf which isn’t great.

Wharton and Pears were different class
Great to be part of that tonight

Got to disagree about the tennis balls it gave the crowd the chance to vent about Waggott and Venkys and I joined in from the family enclosure - Fuck Em!!
It just highlighted where we were, and where we are now
Tonight used to be a standard game for us - now its our season highlight

Wasn't it a calf injury that kept him out previously?
Proud of the lads tonight, up against a Premier League team with a Referee heavily leaning to them and with little rub of the green. We even had to take pens into their end which could have contributed to our two misses. Two weeks back I was criticising Ayari and Chrisene but tonight both played well. The Lpool lad looks a brute and he did well after a shaky start. I liked Moran and Buckley in the middle of the park and they were ably supported by Dolan and Szmodic. Gallagher gave his all until his injury and Pears looks back to his best. The three CH's were magnificent and it's no surprise that MaccyF was shown a bit of mercy and subbed.
Only regret is that Siggy is like the tin man and the Lion on the Wizard of Oz and doesn't appear to have either a heart or much courage. If I were Eustace I'd sit him down and watch the match video and illustrate how Anthony Gordon went about his business. He ran his socks off closing the rovers defenders and Pears down, not giving them a second on the ball to pick a pass out. Pure unselfish graft off the ball that generally goes unnoticed but contributes massively to the team effort.
Newcastle rode their luck tonight, didn't look at all special as their early season form suggested they should. Eddie Howe will still be clinging onto his job but all that's left for us in this seasons FA Cup is a passing interest in who they play next.

Now back to the really important business and all that effort and good work tonight will mean nowt if we don't compete against Swansea as well as we did this evening v the Magpies.

Well all I could hear in the JW upper were boos and if 10-20 individuals who chucked em were expecting to make a point it backfired massively. A couple of dozen behind the goal in a crowd of over 22000 is like a vote of confidence!

Almost, but not quite.....
I hate it, losing on penalties, and then being gratuitously congratulated on a "fine performance".

Pears
Great performance. Didn't have a great deal to do in the first half considering Newcastle United's quality, but he made the right choices when called upon; namely, kicking long and collecting one or two crosses. He was much busier after the interval. He was rooted to the spot for Gordon's goal, which was about the only time our defence didn't protect him enough. Otherwise, he pulled off a good save in a one-on-one situation with Gordon, and the highlight was a great double-save at point blank range in the first period of extra time. How did they not score from one of those? Thought he did OK on penalties given he's not the biggest unit. Saved one and got close to another, but wasn't enough in the end. Overall, probably his best performance in a Rovers shirt.

Brittain
His best game from a defensive point of view. He tracked the wingers really well, put his body on the line, got tackles in, and generally worked hard. His passing game let him down on several occasions today, but overall, that was his best performance in a Rovers shirt.

Hyam
Absolute rock at the back. Headed balls clear of danger, and looked full of leadership which is what we need from him as captain. Might have been undone once in the first half if I recall, but that's OK against superior opposition. A shame his penalty was the one to finish us off. I didn't think it was that bad, but Dubravka is a big unit, and obviously one of those penalty savers.

McFadzean
A good showing. Seemed solid enough, although he was clearly getting tired in the second half and made a mistake on the ball. Correct call to take him off given the amount of games he's played recently and what lies ahead.

Wharton
Brilliant performance. Possibly his best for the club to date. His intelligence on when to drive forward with the ball was great, and got us into some good attacking positions. Got stuck in, and saved out skins in the second-half when blocking a shot with his body at point blank range. He might have been somewhat at fault for their goal because I think he lost Almiron down the wing, but Chrisene might have been caught out of position when trying to deal with him.

Chrisene
Excellent. Showed Premier League quality and a range of going down the channel and cutting inside. Mixed up his play and it worked well. Also did very well defensively, although he may have been caught out of position down the channel for their goal. By far his best performance for us to date.

Buckley
I would have given him Man of the Match if not for being substituted in the 64th minute. He did everything Adam Whartonesque. Played some superb passes, controlled the ball very well under pressure, and put it some great tackles. This, against Premier League opposition, shows the capability he has. I really hope he can continue in this vain.

Moran
Worked hard and played some decent passes and put in some decent tackles. Thought his yellow card was a bit of a silly decision to make because Buckley had it covered in the centre circle, but it turned out to be OK in the end. One of Moran's better performances, certainly.

Dolan
Harried their players well and was neat and tidy on the ball. Seemed to have an extra yard of space about him than he normally gets. A great save from Dubravka prevented his low cross-shot from putting us into the lead in the first half. Did his defensive duties well, and an excellent performance, overall.

Szmodics
Man of Match in spite of his poor penalty. He never stopped harassing Newcastle's back line, and clearly organised when we should press and when we shouldn't. Got into some great attacking positions and could easily have had a hat-trick if not for some superb goalkeeping by Dubravka. Did well to get on the end of Markanday's shot which hit the bar via Dubravka. A goalscorer's instinct. I think it was shortly after that when Szmodics was in a great position in the box and should have put us in front by lifting it over Dubravka, but the shot was too low. Overall, superb stuff from him yet again.

Gallagher
His defending at corners was excellent. I think he headed almost every one of them away in the first half. Don't think he was able to get too much of the ball in the attacking half, but he worked hard as always. I feared the worst when he went off at half-time because we are noticeably more physical and structured with him on the pitch as a focal point. Hopefully his substitution was precautionary, but we'll see.

As for the subs...

Sigurdsson
Obviously doesn't hold the same presence up front as Gallagher, and it showed. I thought he was OK, and showed some neat and skilful touches on the ball as he usually does when he gets on it. I'm always left wondering what his best position is. I still don't know, but it's certainly not as a number nine which is what it looked like last night. Not his worst performance by any stretch of the imagination, nor his best.

Markanday
Superb cameo. Caused Newcastle's backline problems and showed great skill at every opportunity. Unlucky not to score himself when his shot was saved onto the underside of the bar by Dubravka, but Szmodics followed it up with our deserved equaliser. Time and again, he took players on with his low centre of gravity and got into their box. Probably his best performance for Rovers to date.

Garrett
To say he was on the pitch for an hour, I didn't really notice him. He was clearly pegged back to hold the fort. Good to see him continue to get minutes, though, as I'm sure he'll come on leaps and bounds with a bit more experience under his belt.

Ayari
Super cameo that I didn't expect at all. Similar to Chrisene, it seemed as though he was more suited to playing against Premier League players than Championship players. He really got stuck in with tackles and worked hard. He also showed good skill on the ball and some good passes. His penalty was a bit cheeky, but that's a player who has something about him. Best performance for us so far.

Koumetio
When he first came on, he made a few really poor touches, and I feared the worst. But thereafter, he was outstanding. I couldn't believe how far forward he was getting. He is clearly comfortable with the ball at his feet, and a cool customer under pressure when in posession or being closed down. Played some neat attacking passes. Defensively, he was very sound. Headed the ball away from danger when called upon. At 21, I suspect he's not going to be breaking into the Liverpool side, so it would be interesting to see if we could land him permanently in summer if he continues to show that kind of quality.

What I liked about the team in general is that we were very structured and organised. We didn't give Newcastle too many chances, and we did well to frustrate them, even if they were somewhat lacklustre. Every player seemed to be well-drilled in knowing their role in the team and what was expected of them. We played some great stuff going forward, too, and but for two excellent goalkeeping displays (Dubravka was their best player for me), we could have easily nicked it. I hope this performance, if not the end result, can give us a huge confidence boost to try to now win games after a solid start under Eustace. Let's start at Swansea City this coming Saturday.

Edit: How could I forget to mention the supporters? From what I heard, you lot out-sang the Geordies on the Beeb. Brilliant support and a superb turnout. Felt very proud in the knowledge that there is life and atmosphere in the support base still.
