It was more appealing to the Japanese public hence why it took place there. Professional wrestlers (certainly back then) were more respected in Japan and Antonio Inoki was a huge name there. Bigger than Hulk Hogan's fame at his height in the US for instance and actually featured on the main sports pages. I'm sure that he also became a senator though Jesse Ventura became the governor of an entire US state. Still with Inoki it was probably nowhere near as surprising. Of course he wasn't as well known in the US so elsewhere it was "Ali vs Japanese wrestler guy". As you put it theno "whoever it was".Mohammed Ali got involved in one of these stupid bouts I recall. Most boring fight ever. Whoever it was he 'fought' spent most of the bout lying on his back and flailing at Ali with his feet.
Still Gav who cares about credibility in sport when there's 200m sloshing around? All paid for by the numpties who constantly succumb to the media marketeers.
Maybe I haven't looked closely enough but there seems to be more discipline. Of course there can still be trash talk with discipline but my impression is there's more sportsmanship in UFC. Maybe I'm too unrealistic expecting everyone to try and top Mike Tyson lol.Not enough trash talk in UFC ? Really ?
