All's well that ends well as they say. This match ended well despite any amount of slings and arrows of outrageous fortune coming our way from the kick off. This is most definitely a point gained as most would have taken a draw away to Brentford before a ball was kicked. Despite having the prolific Ivan Toney in attack I do think they aren't quite the same without Saeed Benrahma and the excellent £30m man Ollie Watkins. Strange to think that if those two had stayed Toney's arse would be full of splinters from the bench!
Football should be a contest of 11 v 11 with anything different not really giving spectators full value for money. Red cards have ruined many a game as a contest and this was another such. Whether there should be a Green card for a compulsory substitution and/or an electric blue card for 10 minutes or so in the sin bin is not for me to decide but it must make more sense than to reduce a side to 10 men for a brief and barely discernible shirt tug and especially when the 'victim' threw his legs from under himself as if he had been shot. I'd go for those changes but no doubt the traditionalists amongst us would give them as short a shrift as they currently give VAR.
Kaminsky.... 7 Couldn't do much with either goal but made a few telling catches from long balls into the box. I must say I have noticed twice in consecutive matches now that he 'dives down' rather than up and stretching himself for high shots. Watch the vid and you'll see what I mean. Something for the coaching dept to work on perhaps? Also tocay was the first time that I've seen him flustered with the ball at his feet, although it did follow a poor back pass from Nyambe.
Nyambe... 7 Forayed down the right wing and one such run lead to Rothwells opening goal. Contributed well in defence and particularly after Lenihan had been sent off.
Lenihan... 5 I can't give him any more for
a. a stupid and cheap booking.
and
b. a short sharp drag back on Toney for the penalty. Toney felt it and dived without question but no way was it enough for him to go down faster than a ten bob whore.
Coming on the back of a stupid handball which, goodness only knows how, was missed by the Ref v Millwall but which could easily have cost us 2 points. Plus he'll miss 3 key matches now at an important time in our season. These are not the actions of a proper Captain.
Wharton... 6 Unlucky to pick up another injury and replaced on 14 minutes. He appeared on the bench in the second half on crutches and with a foot brace on. Went down with no one around him which I've seen before and suggests an Achilles problem of the type which has just put Bauer at PNE out for the season. If it is Achilles it might not be a full rupture but there is such a poor blood supply that healing is a long job.
Douglas... 5 Another injury candidate I think. Whatever was the reason he was replaced by Amari Bell for the entire second half. A bit of a mish mash in front of him for the first half as the front three didn't appear to be playing to any specific instructions and it appeared none of em wanted to be on the left.
Trybull... 5 Lasted 39 minutes before being rather surprisingly taken off as TM shuffled the pack after Lenihan's dismissal. I'm far from convinced with this lad. He isn't creative, he can't be described as a midfield general, nor a midfield growler and for the most part simply appears to plod around midfield simply tidying up. The jury is out on him.
Johnson.... 7 A solid performance in the middle as he strove to prevent the Brentford midfield controlling the match after the sending off.
Rothwell... 7 Scored a wonderful goal. So 'Joe Rothwell' in it's build up but more Adam Armstrong in it's execution. Joe is a prodigious talent and his ability to carry the ball under close control at breath taking speed from the halfway line to the opposing penalty area needs to be more productive for him to be remembered as a star midfielder rather than a one trick pony. Still he set BB up at Preston with a similar run and notched a candidate for goal of the season today so I shouldn't be too critical perhaps.
Elliot... 7 Grafted well for the cause and played right along the front line for periods in the match, even though his inexperience to play the 10 man game showed through on a few occasions.
Gallagher... 8 I've said in the past that Gallagher doesn't appear to me to actually 'enjoy' playing football but his form has improved of late and today he carried it forward to another level. About time too most would agree but he gave the Brentford defence plenty to think about with his physicality and his energy. He really stepped up to the challenge when we most needed.
Armstrong... 6 Wasn't his day but he still fizzed about and gave the Brentford centre halves and David Raya little time on the ball. Chose to try and set himself up for a shot when it would have been better to slip the ball through to Gallagher on one occasion. They do say strikers are greedy and with rival No 1 Toney at the other end of the pitch I do understand his actions. Surprisingly subbed after 63 minutes.
Subs
Ayala ..... 8
MoM Came on to replace the stricken Wharton after 14 minutes and probably had his best game for us as 'the old head' in a very young back line. He marshalled Bell, Nyambe and Buckley for all the second half and tbf Brentford's much lauded attack was restricted to long range efforts for most of the time.
Buckley... 7 Was surprisingly brought on to replace Tom Trybull after 38 mins to offset Lenihans loss Not a right back by choice but fitted in well in desperate circumstances and played a big part as Brentford stepped up their efforts.
Bell.... 7 Brought on at HT to replace Douglas and despite doing the usual good thing followed by bad thing early doors he settled his nerves down and played some good football.
Davenport... 8 Came on in place of Joe Rothwell on 63 minutes and immediately injected some bite into our midfield by leaving one Brentford player crumpled on the floor after one testy but legal challenge within minutes. Put a real shift in culminating by being in the right place to score the leveller in the 87th minute. I trust this lad has now levered himself above old boys Evans and Bennett in the midfield ranks.
Dolan... 7 Replaced Armstrong on 63 minutes. Surprised me somewhat but maybe TM had almost written this game off and was preserving Rothwell and Armstrong for the next match. Brought his usual enthusiasm to proceedings and gave his all in forcing the Brentford defence to pass it square between themselves on the half away line and keep them from threatening to build attacks. At one stage he resembled that old training ground routine where 3 players form a circle and pass it between themselves with one in the middle closing them down and trying to win the ball.
Tony Mowbray... 7 Would have been 8 or even 9 if I'd judged him solely on his performance when we were down to 10. Commendably every player he sent on brought something to the party and fought like terriers for the cause. However before Lenihan walked I'd have to question the instructions that he gave to his attackers as Gallagher, Armstrong and Elliot didn't appear to be aware of what was wanted from them or where they were expected to play. Armstrong seemed to be more left than normal and with Gallagher more central when I think we all know Armstrong up top has scored 14 goals this season and somewhere near double that in the calendar year and only either a brave man or a fool would want to move him away from where he has been so productive.
Referee Oliver Langford 4 Made a rod for his own back early doors by brandishing his yellow cards so freely. 8 cautions in this match that was hardly a dirty match. Commendably booked Janelt for diving and should have booked Toney too for the same if only Lenihan hadn't stupidly laid his hands on the Brentford man for a millisecond. Also unpredictable as he booked some players for an offence whilst letting others off for the same offence a minute later. Refused to play advantage on a couple of occasions when the rovers were on the front foot and elected stupidly to bring play back for a free kick.
