Cardiff City Vs. Blackburn Rovers
3pm K.O. Saturday 15th January
A big game! A huge opportunity and a chance to close the gap with Bournemouth! This game has all the makings of an exciting encounter but this is Blackburn Rovers and we never make it easy for ourselves! Rovers will hope an earlier season victory at Ewood of 5-1 where Brereton Diaz stole the show with a hat-trick can repeat itself. Cardiff a team in freefall will host Rovers knowing that there is a realistic chance, they could be in the bottom three if beaten at full time and Peterborough pick up points this week.
The birth place of children’s writer Roald Dahl, Cardiff itself is a City in South Wales and has a regional population close to 480,000, it is around a similar size to Liverpool (510,000). Cardiff is notorious for its old coal exportation, once being a world leader in the 20th Century and closing the first one million pound deal in 1907. Being the capital of Wales since 1955, Cardiff is also one of the smallest capital cities in Europe. For those of us who love our food, the staples of Cardiff to try are Cawl which is a lamb type stew, Welsh rarebit, and Brecon venison! Famous people to have come from Cardiff include; Charlotte Church, Shakin Stevens, Shirley Bassey, Gareth Bale and Griff Rhys Jones.
I initally had sympathy for any travelling fans coming from the North for this game, as a child I remember the Blackburn vs Arsenal cup semi-final at the Millennium stadium and catching the bus with my dad, after we lost 3-0 it was an even longer trip home. Courtesy of Wales and there local restrictions sporting events are to be played behind closed doors and this fixture will be no exception. Rovers have played Cardiff a grand total of 73 times in which Rovers have registered 27 wins and 22 draws with our opponents.
Cardiff our hosts have had a difficult season, battling with FFP and the court case concerning the tragedy of Emiliano Sala. They have seen a squad reduction which started with former manager Mick McCarthy and now current manager Steve Morrison (Ex Millwall, Leeds striker) looks like his hands are tied financially.
Alongside a 1927 FA Cup Win, Cardiff are notably famed for there academy which has produced Aaron Ramsey, Joe Ledley, Robert Earnshaw, Adam Matthews, James Collins, Rabbi Matondo and Chris Gunter. This season they have brought through Kieron Evans a tricky winger, Issak Davies a forward and Rubin Colwill a midfield playmaker. Ex-Rover academy scorer; Chanka Zimba has also been close to the first team and has made his debut this season but joined Northampton Town on loan this week.
Cardiff who like Rovers usually field the same 5-2-3 wing back formation have a number of well known players such as;
Aden Flint a big 6.7 centre half, Perry NG the full back and ex-colleague of Harry Pickering at Crewe. Sean Morrison the club captain, Dillon Phillips the ex Blackburn transfer target who is now keeping goals for Cardiff, Will Vaulks once on trial at Ewood Park under Bowyer when at Falkirk adds the bite in midfield alongside Marlon Pack. Kieffer Moore once of Wigan now leads the line having scored twenty league goals last season.
Cardiff’s current position of 20th coincides with a recent last five league game form of; Win,Loss,Draw,Loss,Draw, of which in there last outing with West Brom saw Aden Flint gain a red card in extra time of which has since been rescinded.
Recent players who have played for both teams include;
Junior he is signing any day now Hoilett,
Rudy Gestede,
Greg Cunningham,
Craig Bellamy,
Liam Feeney
Peter Enckleman,
Peter Thorne,
Shane Duffy who I swear played for Cardiff in a certain fixture!
Rovers will be without Harry Pickering who is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a hamstring injury. Joel Bagan will be out for Cardiff along with Kieffer Moore. Current odds are according to Paddy Power;
Cardiff 9/5 Draw 23/10 Rovers 13/10
Miss Cardiff
Miss Blackburn
