Strange really isn't it? While political correctness has gone so over the top decades ago you couldn't even show a toilet (on US Tv at least not sure about UK) and swearing was exceptionally rare. As for sexual content that was non existent in comparison. The 80's and 90's probably had the best balance between political correctness and morality. Nowhere near as PC but nowhere near as much lowest common denominator trash broadcast by the likes of ITV. Of course not all Tv was great but the bad stuff was probably boring rather than outright trashy. Of course it depends what you define as boring not all Tv programmes are produced for entertainment purposes.

Surely all these supposed reality and talent shows MUST have become a tired old format these days?
Much like soaps. We've both always disliked Eastenders passionately but my missus used to have Emmerdals and Corrie on automatically whilst we made and ate our evening meal but one day she decided not to bother anymore and surprise surprise neither of us missed them one bit. I guess we'd simply had our fill of dining in the company of sulky kids, aggressive parents, homosexuals and lesbians snogging (at 7pm), the now apparently compulsory ethnic minorities, plane / train crashes, fires, murders, affairs, divorces all happening in one tiny street / village (delete as appropriate). God only knows how local estate agents would ever begin to market these properties in real life. I think I'd rather move into Fred and Rose West's old gaff!
As for my very limited knowledge of the Essex / Chelsea / Chester set (my kids watched them before they buggered off) and just like the established soaps they are virtually indistinguishable apart from their accents aren't they?

Looks are not relevant Al, particularly not for comedians. If they were we'd never have heard of Frankie Howard, Ken Dodd, Bernard Manning, Two Ronnies, Peter Kay, Frank Skinner, Jimmy Carr etc etc. He does make a great point though.
Am I correct to assume that the most usual career path is pub singer and novelty act to X Factor then back to pub singer and novelty act in the shortest time possible. No doubt a few get to perform for a season on cruise ship or two until the next X Factor newbie traps up as flavour of the month and then they get binned off and return to pub singer again.
