Well that was appalling tonight. No urgency, lack of fight. This constant keeping possession at the back just gives the opposition time to regroup. We need another striker as we looked so powderpuff. Very frustrated but at least our position in the league looks good.

Just like Reading and Wigan. What gives? How can a team in the top two with their great rivals up there to be overtaken be so easily and comprehensively out thought, out gunned, out played and worst of all out fought? The players were simply a disgrace to the club and the shirt this evening.
People are saying don't turn on the Manager but imo the jury is still out on JDT. travis our best defensive midfielder was like a fish out of water again on the right side of defence, Brittain similarly on the left so what gives with Pickering fit and ready sat on the bench?
Without Gallagher at CF we had Vale on the right and Szmodics playing way too deep. Our only threat was from occasional raids by BBD on the left, and his performance again swung wildly from the sublime to the ridiculous. Put simply we had no centre forward and no cutting edge whatsoever. Making Vale fall guy by replacing him with Hirst at ht was a massive mistake as Hirst was just plain awful!
80 mins before anymore changes were made was just ridiculous as the writing had been on the wall all the second half.

At the end of the day, nobody in this league (except perhaps Burnley) can win 4 in a row and go into the next game expecting to make it 5. Its been a form league for 20 years now, you have a good run, you have a bad one.

I've said it before but this isn't a top 2 side. Its a group of players with the ability to play good, not necessarily good players. Consistency is what gets you promoted and:

Hyam is nearly 27 with 2 seasons at this level.
Scott Wharton is 25 with 1 season at this level.
Adam Wharton is 18, Morton is 20 and Vale 21 with little more than a dozen senior appearances each.
Szmodics is 27 with 1 season at this level.
Brereton is a guy half-assing it knowing he's definitely going by summer.

I'm not even gonna start on the subs/reserves but surely its obvious this isn't even a top 6 squad. I said a few pages back on this thread, JDT is taking lemons and making lemonade. Every now and again tonight's level of performance is guaranteed given the kids, former League 1 players, want-aways and the odd top 6 Championship player we have making up the side.

I am sorry b&wh but a lot was down to JDT last night. I said to my mate after 5 mins that the formation was not working. Travis at RWB and Britain at LWB was clearly wrong, Pickering should have been on with Britain at RWB and Travis in the middle. Also why start Vale over Dack and then replace JV with Hirst when Dack was the obvious choice to every Rovers fan present.

This one was 90% down to JDT.

I said very early on that we're just going to have to accept being inconsistent this season, a young squad, a new manager etc, but I'm also not averse to criticism if I think it's warranted. During the match is not the time to do it. i'd always stand by that, but sometimes things need saying.

There's no guarantee that last nights game would've turned out any different with a different team selection. but playing players out of position when there's no need to certainly doesn't help. Morton who's been so good lately looked off it, as did A Wharton and Szmodics who were both good Saturday. Vale had a poor game and BBD looked tired right from the start I thought, These midweek away games after we've played on Saturday seem to be a step too far this season for some reason, you'd think with our young legs we'd be raring to go but we've looked lethargic 4 or 5 times now in these matches.

I'm still 110 per cent behind the manager but fairs fair, he certainly got the team selection wrong last night. Hopefully he learns from that, then IMO we just move on to Saturday and put last night behind us.

Something else about last night that's interesting is the fact Rovers had 63% possession. In this day and age with all the stats surely someone could start listing possession percentages in the opposition half, that would surely be more of a relevant stat? Maybe that's not possible I don't know, but if it was it would be interesting to see the percentages last night based on that.

My thoughts entirely SG. And spot on with your criticism BB. Passing across the back line and back again is no way to play when we are a goal down! Mark Robins must have been delighted with our tactics last night. Recent home matches v Sland and Brum saw most of the play in our half after they went a goal down. I must say TM would have been given dogs abuse for our Team selection and tactics last night.

Heres' a telling set of figures..... the number of passes made. A rather stark condemnation given that we were behind for 50 minutes.

Kaminski N/A

Hyam 82
Ayala 54
Wharton 77
Brittain 63
Travis (79 mins) 65
WhartonA (80 mins) 67
Morton 73
Szmodics (80 mins) 52
BBD 35
Vale (45mins) 13
Hirst (45 mins) 6

I know most CF's don't spend long on the ball but for Vale and Hirst to have only 19 passes between them is ludicrous.

Just to add.... I wonder how many of the midfielder's passes were back to the defence as I lost count of the number of times a defender passed the ball to a tightly marked midfielder who had no option but to pass it straight back.

Poor old Jake Garret, the victim of a Ref who carried out the letter of the law ad verbatum rather than ref according to the spirit of the game. Yes he went to ground, yes it could be deemed two footed, maybe a touch reckless but dangerous? No way. There was no contact with his opponent whatsoever and the lad didnt even go to ground. Any player wanting to hurt an opponent wouldn't have missed doing so.. A yellow and a stern warning and no more.

I'm getting an overpowering whiff of Bullshit! JDT (the new tinkerman) playing a right back on the left and a rather slow midfielder at right back! What is the point of brittains yard of pace when you have to turn back to put a cross in? The old advice to play your strongest team still holds good!
How could I get into post match press conferences I wonder?
