I said earlier.........
Donny...... Currently 4th in League 1 with a decent recent away record of W2 D1 L1.
Play the first team, hopefully get 2 in front with 30mins to play and then sub as many of the seniors as we can. Far better than to start with poorer players and then end up with a desperate rescue job.
Seems after all his years in the game that that particular penny hasn't dropped yet with Tony Mowbray! It's not just Mowbray tbf there are lots of Managers that fall in the same trap with many never ever learning their lesson! I had a strong feeling he might drop Armstrong and perhaps play Gallagher in his place. That never happened and so we played most of the match with no proper striker. Brereton on the left, Dolan on the right, Dack in the hole and nothing but an empty space up top! WTF was that about?
So we are out of the Cup and tbqh I'm not in the least bothered so low has the FA Cup sunk in the list of priorities these days. I have to say though that is still no excuse for such a shoddy team and individual performance though from players and Manager alike.
Pears.... 4 Should have been a 6 for a decent enough match but for his abysmal error which gifted Donny their goal.
Buckley .... 6 An OK game for our permanent sub BUT is he capable of making that next step up to first team duties in the Championship? I have to say that I am beginning to doubt it. Always a neat, tidy and intelligent player with a decent pass and a tough tackle on him. But his lack of strength and pace going to limit his potential? Missed an absolute sitter late in the game. The message that I keep banging out to anyone going for goal is
INSIDE FAR POST FFS! Doesn't appear to me that the coaching staff at Brockhall have collected this particular badge yet. It's basic but it will always be relevant.
Lenihan... 6 Not a great deal to do but he and Johnson did not inspire too much confidence today as but for profligate finishing Donny could have won this match with room to spare.
Johnson... 6 Ditto to Lenihan but in fairness he is being played out of position through necessity.
Bell... 3 Simply not at the races today and reverted to the Bell of old that persuaded TM to sign Douglas on loan. Some players are often decribed as "intelligent footballers", well in my view Amari Bell is the opposite, Picked a foot/ankle injury up at the end of the 1st half and was replaced by Douglas at HT. tbqh He deserved replacing by that time anyway.
Travis... 4 Is he fully recovered? My own experience of a ruptured cruciate ligament at 15 and a serious accident resulting in a ripped thigh muscle at 17 tells me that sometimes when the medics say Ok the mind takes longer to convince.
Trybull... 5 He is what he is. Steady enough in midfield without ever being an inspirational driving force.
Downing ... 5 Not sure why he is here this season unless it's some kind of old pals act. I get the feeling the offer we made him was much less than the season before and that he only landed back because no other club wanted to pay him as much as we did. I'm probably way off the mark but I feel he's on a low basic plus a pay-as-you-play bonus, otherwise I can see no other reason for TM giving him a run out so often. Certainly not when it involves leaving Rothwell, Elliot, Davenport and usually also Buckley on the bench.
Dolan... 6 Fizzed about a lot and certainly worried Donny's defence without ever threatening them too much.
Brereton.... 3 Back to his worst Dumb and Dumber form without Dumber even making an appearance. Out of sorts and had an awful match. Nothing he attempted came off. Slow of thought, poor first touch, poor passing, poor carrying the ball and falls over far too easily.
Dack... 5 Where was he playing? What were his match instructions? When we needed a replacement for Adam Armstrong at 'point' why did he decide to stick to what he knows best and play 'in the hole'? Dolan on the right and BB on the left with him stubbornly in the role of support striker who tf was expected to score goals?
Subs
Douglas (Bell HT)... 5 Replaced Bell through injury but hardly an inspiring display.
Elliot (Travis 59)... 6 Did influence play quite as bit and put the rovers on the front foot... or did Donny decide to 'have and to hold' and stay deep?
Rothwell ( Downing 59) 5 Added pace an a bit of snap to the midfield but other than that no real influence on the game.
Armstrong (Trybull 64) 6 Unable to snatch a winner but did have one of our two shots on target.
Davenport (Dack 73) 5 Again had little influence on proceedings.
Tony Mowbray ..3 A dreadful match. Win the game then rest the best players and most definitely not in the reverse order as of today. A trap so many managers fall into in underestimating the opposition. Obviously hampered in defence but that is no reason for sending out such a disjointed and ineffective attacking line up. Where were the defensive midfield trio of Trybull, Travis and Downing as Richards advanced unopposed to fire home the winner? Why did Lenihan and Johnson retreat and retreat until Richards was in striking distance? How he left BB on for the entire match when even by his own standards he was having a stinker is just another mystery. This match may prove to be another straw on the camels back for TM.
Referee Samuel Barrott... 7 I don't think this lad has Refereed a match above Leagues 1 and 2 but he had a solid enough game today. He can come to Ewood again.
