He made insulting remarks about Rovers. This is a guy who managed a town club in Aberdeen yet he never regarded them as inferior to Celtic/Rangers and unworthy of challenging them. Scottish football of course was slightly more competitive then (and Aberdeen beat Real Madrid in a final for goodness sake) but they didn't have the finances that Rovers had. The way he spoke of this club after Jack refused to sell Shearer to them (practically harassed Rovers that whole summer) was beyond disrespectful and a complete insult to everything Jack did. Don't rewrite history Yoda with this "soft spot" thing it's rubbish. As I've said he's made positive remarks about City, Liverpool, etc from time to time. He was patronising Wenger recently as well and that's what he does once people are no longer threats to him.

OK Jack outright said he was going to make "Man United look cheap". That's not a mythical quote it's accredited to the journalist Ian Ridley who heard it face to face. Maybe that was a bit of provocation (what with Liverpool having been dominant for so long and perhaps he didn't want to offend Dalglish assuming it was after his appointment) but if Jack didn't like someone he had damn good reason. Unlike Ferguson who's bullied countless people, issued bans, etc.

Anyway I'm having a break from posting for the rest of the month so there's little point responding to something (this specific post anyway if not the thread) I won't see for weeks.

Correct but my gripes with Ferguson are justified as well. If it was Coyle in hospital would people be lining up saying nice things and ignoring his poor management skills? No of course not so I don't see why Ferguson's bullying should be glossed over. My comment at George Best was unsympathetic but that's different. In comparison to that I was saying that at least there was a degree of sympathy this time. For goodness sake I've said it won't be the same without him. For someone who hated Jack I've been pretty generous even giving him a somewhat backhanded compliment.

As for respect how much did United show those Munich survivors who died or couldn't play anymore? Has Ferguson ever spoken out for them? No but he's been happy to let the club exploit it. At least Liverpool haven't been profit motivated by endlessly bringing up Hillsborough 89. Prior to that United were not so vile (no worse than anyone else really though football had more dignity then anyway) but ever since then they have been the most hated club in the country for good reason.

I believe that Lpool are also using Hillsborough in a similar cynical way that MU used Munich.

I agree but one difference being they aren't cashing in by exploiting it. They also respect those who were killed and survivors something that United didn't do unless it boosted their image (maybe Duncan Edwards was so great he made B Charlton feel inferior but it's a nice story to exaggerate a bit isn't it with comparisons to Pele, Maradona, etc?) or someone like Charlton who were able to resume playing.

I'll try and take a few weeks off (the other place has made that decision for me over next 2 weeks at least) but I've said this before and haven't been able to stick to it. Don't be that shocked you know how obsessive I can be.

Supposedly first thing he said was asking about Doncaster's result. Could be true or could just be another myth populated by the "cult of Ferguson" brand. Anything for another convenient story, another convenient headline with a virtuous football angle. Remember Duncan Edwards alleged last words? :rolleyes:
