I agree ODB that stats matter and the clue is in the word “striker.” His strike rate this season is very impressive. If that is down to his maturing as a player full of confidence then that’s great news for our club.
The proof of the pudding is if he does it next season and the season after that. I think only then will he be considered the real deal.
His record for the previous three seasons has not been good but maybe the transfer of Adam Armstrong has given him his chance to shine and this is his time.

A striker is measured on goals alone, that’s all that counts.
To a certain extent OBD , but I think it’s more nuanced than that . When I played cricket some batsmen were known as ‘ flat track bullies “ . Scored big runs when the bowling wasn’t that great , the batting track was perfect and the match situation didn’t ask for guts , hard work and cajones. They’d go in at 75-1 and score 70 not out . However real character / technique / ability shines through when it’s 23 - 3 and a batsman goes in on a sticky wicket , gets 70 not out and wins the game for his team

I accept football is a different game from cricket but let’s be honest , in his first 3 years Ben didn’t score and didn’t look a footballer . His lack of basic skills like holding the ball up with his back to goal , controlling a pass played to him at pace and heading ability , well he wouldn’t have looked out of place on Pleasington . I still think he struggles with the basics and if his goals dry up , what then ?

He’s done well this season and scored 20 goals . A lot of those goals have been scored whilst the Rovers have been on a crest of a wave , the team on a great run , with the defence locking out the opposition. - a flat track scenario. Over the last three or four games things have got tougher , we’re on a stickier wicket . It’s these games when I’d expect our £25 million striker to the drive the team on , stand out as a special player and lead the line . In effect more than just score goals .

I’ve always liked him . He seems a really decent young man and plays with his heart on his sleeve . He was robbed of a goal yesterday by a shocking decision .

Middlesbrough on Monday is the start of a big month for Ben ( and the Rovers ) I hope he continues to score , gets better and proves me wrong .

Fair play to him - kept us up that season didn't he... Found his level after that though, becoming a bit of a journeyman really.
Souness last season or so aside, we were so lucky with strikers for 20 years -The PL Winners, Jansen, Cole, Bellamy, McCarthy, Santa Cruz... even Yakubu! Was a privilege to watch some of them - Bellamy was my favourite of the lot - adored him.
You don't rem SG! Wasn't up there with that lot but he was a legend at the old Ewood.

He's missed the great David Speedie too! Sometimes I'm glad I'm old..... but not all that often.

Totally agree with this but the simple reason he’s not “driving the team on” IMO is his head’s been turned.

I’ve not been to many games the last couple of seasons and never used to sit in the JW. So when I was in the upper tier with a great view against Preston I became fixated on this Ben Brereton I’d never seen before and watched him particularly all game.

Ewood was literally a sticky wicket, game barely playable it was that waterlogged. Preston pinned us back all first half and there wasn’t much between the teams. Except 1 guy who was quick, strong, held the ball up. relentlessly ran the channels, took players on, and scored the winner.

I saw warning signs with him against Barnsley. Seemed to duck out of 50/50s, much less sprints, to an extent hid. Saw it even more against Cardiff and Hull. Really hope he snaps out of it when the transfer window ends if he’s still here.

That's why I've referred to him on occasion as Jeckyl and Hyde. Will the real BBD please stand up.

It’s probably because he’s pissed off being fouled in the penalty area every week and the referees ignoring him. I bet opposition defenders are also noticing this too. It’s disgraceful.

That's the price of being tagged a diver by referees.
