What a week! W1 D1 L1 no way tells the whole story does it? I suspect most of us would have been happy with just a couple of points against top of the table clubs LUFC, Soton and an away trip to Bristol City. Perhaps 3 gained at mid table Bristol would have been above and beyond our expectations, whilst the very real pssibility of sweet Fanny Adams would not have been all that far away from the pessimists among us leaving desperate wins required v Sheff Wed and Coventry.
Remember this is the rovers though isn't it? First up a commendable and hard fought 0-0 draw against the southern softies Southampton at Ewood gave us a very welcome point last Saturday. A scarcely credible 5-0 horror show, (in fact no show) at Bristol on Wednesday wasted all that effort and the teams abject display must have made us many people's favourites to drop through the trap door. Next up an away trip to Elland road where a similar display could have seen 10 goals flashing past Stephen Pears and into the net, even a battling display like the Soton game would have seen us come away with a respectable 2-1 / 2-0 type of score. It was not to be as BRFC became the mouse that roared and a fine defensive display coupled with a decent threat on the break saw Sammy Szmodics give Mellier no chance as he finished off a lightning quick move of real excellence in the 82nd minute. Big Sam Gallagher rose to flick a header to the feet of Dolan who spotted Sammy in acres of space and played a peach of a pass to him and as we've seen many times this season Szmodics is lethal from that situation. 0-1 to silence the Elland road neanderthals who had been baying for the blood of the Rovers and Referee James Bell and his assistants all afternoon. I suggested previously that the Elland road crew are the least knowledgeable club supporters that I can think of and I see no reason to change my opinion.
So another 8 minutes of normal time plus 8 minutes of stoppage time later the Rovers bagged an invaluable 3 points on a ground that no other club had won all season!
Just to add context to that result I've just checked and the est value of the Leeds squad is over 200 million euros! Just by way of comparison the Rovers squad is valued at 50 million euros! Not only that but 'our' most valuable player at 5m euros is apparently our bit part Brightonian Yasin Ayari! It's high time the parachute bollox were addressed properly as only a plucky Ipswich are spoiling a top of the table party between last season's relegated clubs.

Pears ... 8 Pulled off some excellent saves throughout and earned every GK's favourite a clean sheet.

Carter.... 8 A marvellous display after being out for so long! Showed just how much we have missed him.

Brittain.... 8 Along with Carter he was up against the dangerous Dutch front man and Leed's leading scorer Summerville who had been joined in the 70th minute by Italian squad striker Gnonto as Farke threw on ex Man Utd £25m winger James to take Gnonto's place on the right wing.

Wharton... 6 Stood up well to Leeds but his distribution was woeful and he was subbed by McFadzean at HT. Whether there was an injury fear or not is debateable.

Hyam... 8 I was surprised to see Dom in the starting line up but Eustace employed great psychology by giving him the chance to get over his abysmal and atrocious performance on Wednesday.

Pickering .. 8 Up against two toughies on the leeds right and never let anyone down although I thought Daniel James actually gave him more problems than Gnonto had.

Tronstad... 8 Put himself about everywhere in midfield.

Rankin Costello.... 9 (I never give 10's) A wonderfull all action display a mixture of class and 'never say die' endeavour.

Dolan.... 8 Top effort. He gave Leeds many problems and claimed a wonderful assist. Should have had a goal but for an excellent last ditch piece of defending.

Gallagher... 8 Played his part in defending from the front. The three forwards never allowed the Leeds defenders much time to create from the back.

Szmodics.... 9 Mr perpetual motion who found space all afternoon up top and never gave the Leeds defenders any time on the ball and scored his goal superbly.

Q. Will any of these three be here next season? :worried:

Subs

McFadzean.... 8 (Wharton 45) I had fears for his lack of pace against the speedy Leeds attackers but what he lacked in pace he made up for in anticipation.

Chrisene... 7 (Dolan 84) Just after he'd created the goal he was winched off. No doubt Eustace had decided to give Pickering a partner to stop the momentum down the right Dan James wqas building. It worked too!

Telalovic.... N/A (Szmodics 96).

Eustace.... 9 He'd done his homework on Leeds for sure and employed good psychology in giving the team that were so embarrassed and humiliated on Wed the chance to repair the damage. The front 3 must have been told to work their bollocks off to stop Leeds building from the back, they did and it worked.
At times the rovers rode their luck but no one can say they didn't deserve to, especially the times during the course of this season when the fates seemed well and truly stacked against us.

Referee James Bell 8 Did OK in a cauldron of Leeds hatred. Other Refs could have wilted but he wasn't swayed by the many dives and penalty claims that Leeds used to whip up their fans.
