Duty of care missing disgracefully. What happens to the kids that can actually walk there when their parents have gone to work? btw that's a practice which appears to be beyond the capabilities of the members of the teaching profession?
I ran my wife to work this morning and passed lots of people doing the same..... can we asume none of those were teachers? They won't have considered this, in fact they won't even care BUT what a dreadful example they show to their pupils. Teaching kids isn't just about the 3 R's is it?

Have to say I have a foot in both camps here . I walked to work this morning , around two miles . I hate driving in the snow and Preston New Road at 8.00pm this morning was pretty scary - packed ice and cars skidding and sliding. I have a colleague who drove in from Barnoldswick , set off at 6.45 and got to the Blackburn office at 10.15

My wife's a teacher and works at a primary in Great Harwood around 7 miles . She usually sets off at 7.10 and is in school for 7.30 but she got a text at 7.00 saying wait , and then one at 7.30 saying the school was closed. So a day off for her today but she's pretty embarrassed by the whole thing , especially now the snow has melted . However there are issues associated with the health and safety culture ( eg written risk assessments just for a school trip ) which does make things slightly different than they were in our day . The decision to close is usually made by the Head or Deputy , so it's unfair to blame all teachers

However we both agree that closing schools is out of the question . At her school there are some teachers and assistant teachers who live in Great Harwood . I suggested they should have a policy that anyone within a three mile radius ( an hour's walk) should be expected in school and those outside get in if they can . Closing schools is a nightmare for working parents and really shouldn't happen , except in the most extreme circumstances.

I just thought I'd add this to the snow and schools debate . Fascinating article in the Times by Melanie Phillips , the journalist & political commentator whose views I rarely disagree with , about a school in London and the approach their Headmistress takes regarding discipline and expectations of the pupils . Certainly drives a coach and horses through the leftie/liberal " child-centred " approach to learning.

Well worth a read but I think you have to register to read the whole article.

Just been to pay my golf club fees this afternoon.
One of the ladies in the office told me that her daughter goes to Westholme and it was open every day last week, despite the snow.
Perhaps a different attitude exists in the private sector?

No, not really because Westholme was shut today.

Hear Hear OOT.

The thing that pisses me off is their complete disregard for the safety and welfare of their pupils. Pretty obvious that many will be left 'home alone' isn't it?

Very good that Twitter info but lots of Westholme kids don't go by bus.

The ones that reached school had someone to look after them until whatever time they could be picked up.
I don't see the problem.

There isn't one in that case. Just so long as kids are not left unattended it's fine. Is that always the case in every school?

I doubt it, Drog.
In fact, it's quite disturbing to consider what might happen to kids who can't get into school and have parents out at work or worse, no key or no relation to visit.

Exactly. Headteachers bang on about H&S issues with snow and ice at school etc but shouldn't the H&S Exec hold their toes to the fire over that issue too? Somebody has to accept responsibility for minors should situations like you describe occur.
