Can you imagine this offer being rejected if it had been for disadvantaged BAME kids?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-50947271
No

In my opinion the schools are running scared of the bad publicity and a potential action from some ‘ social justice warrior’ lawyer who might deem the scholarships for deprived white boys as discriminatory under the Equality Act 2010 .

This type of grant/ scholarship could be deemed lawful ( so unlikely to have been rejected - see Stormzy below ) if offered to those with protected characteristics ( as defined in the Equality Act 2010 ) under the term ‘ positive action’ as opposed to positive discrimination which is unlawful :

- positive action is defined as voluntary actions that can be taken to address any imbalance of opportunity or disadvantage that an individual with a protected characteristic could face. Protected characteristics, as identified in the Equality Act 2010, are race, gender, religion, age, sexuality, disability, marriage/civil partnership status and pregnancy/maternity.

So under the above it could be argued that Stormzy’s grant to pay for two black ( protected characteristic ) students to go to Cambridge University sits nicely with the definition of positive action and the under representation of black students at Cambridge . No problem with that

Unfortunately deprived white boys wouldn’t be classed as having a protected characteristic under the Act even though they need just as much help as Stormzy’s black students . In their case it could be argued that helping deprived white boys wouldn’t be positive action ( lawful ) but positive discrimination ( unlawful) .

However as Trevor Philips says the intention of the Equality Act was not designed to favour people of colour, but to ensure equality.

The schools have taken the cowards’ way out . Deprived white boys are now the lowest achievers ( including all ethnic minorities) and since Grammar Schools were abolished , the bright ones have little opportunity to access the type of education these schools offer

The people in charge of Winchester and Dulwich need to grow a pair and take up this generous offer and give some bright deprived white boys a leg up .

I’m sure the likes of Nugee , Abbott , Chakrabati and others in the Momentum Labour Party who send their kids to private/ selective schools would approve if they did

Lets hope Boris and Javid have the momentum to crack down hard on this. I've no idea why it's never been done, and why it's been swept under the PC carpet for so long. It must be a massive vote winner for anyone with young children across the nation and especially across the North where the collective cry for help and recognition from those areas so transformed the general election result. Zero tolerance for starters.

btw benjydog must still be in some really deep depression eh? Given old Dawkin's penchant for changing identities I shouldn't be surprised to find Benjamin Kaynine consigned to the history books and some new 'Mr Hyde' take his place.

I'm staggered at the length of Jim's absence to be honest. We're talking about a man who, as soon as he tracked us down, abandoned the far more numerous/active main Rovers site where everyone agrees with him so he could argue on here by himself for years.

I thought we were talking about a level where even if Labour were dissolved he'd refuse to acknowledge it. Maybe he destroyed his computer in a fit of rage at the result and is saving up for a new one.

Sadly he will be waiting for Corbyn’s free Broadband for a while :D:D:D

Like those Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender long after WW2 had finished , I bet he’s still out canvassing, muttering ‘ turkeys , voting, Christmas ‘ over and over again .

Perhaps he’s not coping well with the fact that the vast majority of the British people regarded his hero as an idiot , his promises as unbelievable and his beloved manifesto as utter madness.

Anyone remember those hairy scruffs who used to sell the Socialist Worker/ Militant newspapers at the bottom of the spiral walkway outside the market in the late 1970s ?
You thinking what I’m thinking ? :D

I was thinking that during my previous post! That Japanese soldier who carried on fighting WW2 until 1974. Forest of Bowland is a bit harder to get lost in than the Philippines but it is possible Jim is out there lost, telling the sheep and the birds that Corbyn will be PM.

I was banned for alleged trolling which was bollocks. What I was actually doing was giving the likes of Jim a bit of grief back whilst he and the clique got away with it. I wonder if he’s just too cowardly to post on here anymore or maybe just embarrassed for supporting that shambolic party?

My (numerous) experiences of their skewed moderation in a nutshell. Typical left wing tactics to silence any opposition to their agenda.

You're forgetting OOT that the Holy Trinity of jim mk2 / Benjamin Kaynine /Doris etc. was voting Conservative back then. Drog's due diligence on him is correct.

BTW is the spiral still there or was it demolished with Blackburn's latest act of civic vandalism?

Gone. As has the rest of the market and market hall. It's the bus terminal now I think.

Yes all gone , as Drog says , replaced by the new bus station . I drove past when they were demolishing the bit that housed the old Yin Kin . I ended up having a meal up there more times than I care to remember , after 1970’s nights out in Blackburn . Happy days

I didn’t realise Benjy voted Tory back in the day . Just thought he had a ‘ thing ‘ for Maggie !

I'll take a picture and post it this week so you can witness the mess there.

Cheers pal - the spiral was great as kids but I suspect the town planners cut the heart out of Blackburn when they first built the shopping centre in the early seventies. I don't remember owt else.

I recall trailing around the old market outside the Town Hall and Market Hall with my Mother as a young child. It was shit and I bloody well hated it! Usually cold and if it was raining all the rain used to run off the canvas and down the necks of the shoppers. The 'New' Market was much improved on the 'tented village'.
I barely remember the old Market Hall itself and that appears to be the much missed part of the old town centre, along with Thwaites Arcade of course. You can read about it (and the old Co Op Emporium here......... ........ http://www.cottontown.org/Shops and Markets/Pages/Markets.aspx

btw I recall after getting too old for Lyons at about 16 and going to Stax on Church St. I didn't go for long as the Red House became my haunt from 16 1/2 onwards. I rem going up some steps to get in to Stax and I think it was between Yates's and Lloyds Bank but my memory isn't that great..... except that was the first time I'd ever seen a stroboscope in action! Wonderful tech back then and now I've got a bloody 25 quid torch with one on!

Long before my time that pal

I remember the spiral well with its steps on the inside and skateboarding track on the outside! St Johns Tavern with the daytime drinkers and the sarsaparilla man in the big market, happy days.
