Plymouth v Rovers

I thought I would do the preview for this game as it’s my “local” team only 19 miles away in darkest Devon!
I was hoping to go to this one but the Rovers have said I don’t fulfil the criteria for an away ticket as I haven’t bought one in donkey’s years so I am going to rely on my Plymouth supporting acquaintance who might help me out as he did 5 years ago when I saw us lose 2-0 bringing an end to an unbeaten 18 match run. I remember it was Derrick Williams who played an emergency centre half role that day.
Anyway, I’m still buzzing from todays win that I can’t wait for Saturday even though we’ve got Harrogate on Wednesday so please forgive me for being a bit premature.
Plymouth... not the greatest city on earth! Regenerated in the 1960’s in the neo-concrete style following the blitz the city centre is drab, draughty and soulless especially following the night time hatchet job on 114 trees which still lie there in Armada Way following a nationwide campaign of hatred against the local council.
If your driving down be aware the roads are the worst I’ve seen for signs and directions which you follow on the road itself where lanes suddenly change and you end up stranded!
Home Park is just outside the city but nearby parking is not great with lots of restricted streets; maybe park and ride?
Why Argyle I hear you say? The club was formed in the late Victorian era when interest in Scotland increased when Queen Victoria bought Balmoral. There is a posh row of terraced houses in Plymouth named Argyle Street and when the club was formed and they wanted a name someone suggested Argyle to give it some prestige.
Players who have played for both clubs include one of my favourite players Mike Harrison in the 60’s, a guy with a bullet shot. Nicky Marker, Keith Hill, Craig Skinner, Colin Randell, Andy Morrison, Neil Ennis.
Wasnt it Plymouth who were the first team to come to Ewood in the Dalgleish era? Didn’t David Speedie get a hat trick at Home Park to secure a playoff place? And didn’t a rat cause a match again at Home Park to be stopped in the 80’s when it came onto the pitch?
Plymouth could be a massive club with huge crowd potential as only they and Exeter are league clubs in an enormous catchment area including Cornwall and Devon. My football highlights on a Monday involve those two, Yeovil and Torquay!
Still feeling on a high from today I’m going for
Plymouth 1 v Rovers 2 with Devon lad Gallagher getting the winner!

I’ll be at this one organised my work to be in Tiverton. Then down to the game Saturday it’s a ground I’ve never been to.
Remember them in the 70’s when they arrived early in the morning and sprayed the town green. They brought thousands as it was first v second. Think if I remember we beat them 5v2. They also got a real thumping from midway onwards for the spraying of Victoria at the boulevard

I was playing that day at pleasington playing fields. Rivers v Plymouth was a massively important match and I kept hearing cheers coming from the direction of Ewood. Our match finished and I asked a chap walking his dog if he'd heard the score. He said "I think they are 2/1 down". I couldn't believe it but it turned out the rovers were losing when he must have left home only to have a fantastic second half and run out 5-2 winners. I recall Plymouth had two great (northern) strikers that season Rafferty from Cumbria and Chorley's Paul Mariner. Mariner (rip) going on to play at Ipswich in the old 1st div and lead England many times.

The Plymouth dished out a few slaps early doors but came a cropper when the Blackburn mob got together later. Or so I read of course.

He may be a sub on sat for Plymouth ,Callum Wright was pinched off us by Liecester from the academy. He did not make it there and ended up at Cheltenham thsts were Argle picked him up from.I think Ryan Kidd should mention this to our Academy lads. The grass is not always greener away from Brockhall.

Morning All, Janner holding an olive branch here!

Just thought I'd give some logistical info for any of you coming down on Saturday, as whilst OP Tony has given some guidance it is not the most accurate.

If you are driving down it is pretty simple, when the M5 stops at Exeter it turns instantly into the A38, stay on that for 30 odd miles until you get to the next settlement with more than 50 houses, that's Plymouth. Stay on that until the Mannamead junction where you take the 2nd exit of the elevated roundabout (signposted for the ground) and stay on that road until you get to the ground, not sure where that has the hazards as described.

There is a very large, and free of charge car park right next to the ground for all to use but make sure you are there a couple of hours or 3 prior to KO to ensure you get in, gets chock-a-bloc on match days (bloody park and riders for the city shops!!).

If later and struggling to get in the car park (have I mentioned it's free to park) then use the streets around Peverell or Stoke areas adjacent to the Park, there are no street parking restrictions or permits needed in that area.

If you park around Peverell then Mutley Plain is good for a few ales prior to the game, 5 or 6 pubs/bars within 10 minutes of the park (colours may prohibit in a few).

If on the Stoke side then Stoke Village has a few pubs, localish so please be respectful.

If you don't want to go too far from the ground then The Brittania (a Wetherspoon's) is open to all but gets absolutely wedged.

Further afield is the Barbican, loads of drinking holes (pricier except the Spoon's - The Gog and Magog) and eateries/fish and chip shops, worth a visit if here early or staying and then the city centre (usual city centre fare) lies between there and the Train Station, but a good 45min yomp from the ground but plenty of Taxi ranks around both the Barbican and Town..

The trees in the centre have now been taken away for the timber to be utilised for community projects across the city and their felling has made space for the planting of a larger number of better suited trees, which was always the plan but the Tree Huggers (from all around the country who really aren't the brightest despite all having been to Uni) thought because it was done at night it was some clandestine plan to deforest the planet. It's just safer to fell trees when the city centre streets are not full of people shopping. So thanks to them considerate melts for adding more to our council tax bill.

Enjoy yourselves, but please leave empty handed, I'm still not over David Speedie's hat-trick!!!

I remember it well. The Plymouth lot arrived about 8am so the bus drivers could have a rest. They painted the town green.

Rovers went 2-0 down and then missed a penalty. We scored just before half time then hit 4 in the second half. I recall a meat pie flying over my head launched from behind me in the BBE; it hit the crossbar and showered the Plymouth goalie in beef (cows arse) and potato. 😂😂🔵

Such a great day!
Probably my favourite home day ever
Winning at Old Trafford - Pederson day! (I didnt get to Anfield in 95 or that might top the list) - favourite away day

I love coming on here, it's the only time I feel young! Talking about matches played when I was still in nappies and everyone seems to remember them. I wasn't obviously at the match in the 70's but I was there for the 5-2 at Ewood in 91 and for the 3-1 at Home park in 92.

Good club Plymouth with good fans and as Tony say's they have the potential to be a very well supported club a la Brighton if they ever do reach the Premier. As for Saturday I'm going for a 2 nil Rovers win.

1-2👍
Dangerous ground for the superstitious. When I predict a rovers defeat they win.
