It wasn't total dross. Just over ten years ago the booing and shouts of 'Allardyce Out' were deafening on occasion, as well as in pubs after the game where the strange human trait of repeating a lie often enough that it becomes a truth was proven time and again. Thankfully most of those reality denying football numpties weaned on Jack Walker's millions have buggered off as they always were going to do once the glory years came inevitably to an end. Now it appears a passing game isn't wanted from many of the rovers fans either. So what is it that we really want apart from a proper good moan? Need proof? How many times have people said that our traditional wet and cold northern weather is now too hot?
Mowbray as far as I can see has made fewer mistakes than any of his predecessors of the last decade. The two glaringly obvious ones are obvious in him sanctioning the spewing of so much money on Dumb and Dumber. Dumb has little attacking talent or football instinct, as for Dumber we had the bugger for a less than impressive full season and easily long enough to know that he wasn't ever going to be good enough for a 5m outlay and massive (for us) wages!
After those massively baffling cock ups the only gripe I have with Mowbray's 'new look football' were his tactics last year when we were guilty of
'over footballing' around the opponents penalty area. Any striker worth his salt will thrive off early balls down the channels or into the box. Passing football is fine and it seems to be the key to us being eyed favourably by local big clubs to bring on their talent but it has to have a purpose by scoring goals and winning points! I recall Leeds under Revie and Liverpool under Shanks and Paisley being the first teams to make passing and retaining possession a priority. Liverpool especially were to do so very successfully for twenty years. Shanks tactics were simplicity itself, he wanted his players to get the ball and immediately have three options of players in space
the way they are facing, to pass to with just one or two touches of the ball. As soon as they passed to one they had not to admire their work but to get into position asap for a possible return pass. Rinse and repeat for 90 minutes. No fancy football, no show boating and no trickery just let the ball do the work. The only players allowed to do that and actually take players on were the fancy Dan attacking players e.g. Peter Thompson, Kevin Keegan, Craig Johnson and Stevie Heighway. Shanks had recognised that 'robotic possession based passing football' didn't lead to enough goals and that in and around the opponents box pace, skill and trickery was needed to disorganise and confuse defenders. That is where Mowbray's tactics fell down. Wingers and overlapping full backs elected or were under instruction not to cross the ball early but to play it back to a basically non scoring midfield colleague. Either lost possession or a long cross from deep to a 5ft 7" striker by this time tightly marked by a resident six foot CH resulted far too often. Shame really because a number of goals last season were totally breathtaking in the speed the ball took to get from our area to the back of the opponents net! Armstrong's pace and Rothwell's too were being utilised all too infrequently and instead wasted. At times we were devastating but more often our possession and attacking was not productive.
Good player and great passer that Harvey Elliot was he definitely did not have the dribbling skills or pace to get take out the full back and get to the by-line. Pretty obvious too as he's a left footer. Not great qualities for a future superstar wide man are they? I may be being a little previous but I can't see him making it at Liverpool. I can see him being played in the (creative) hole at a lesser club like Soton or Fulham etc. (My jury is out on him and no doubt you'll all revel in reminding me of this after he's become the first name on Klopp's team sheet in a year or two.) Meanwhile Dumb on the left and being a right footer turned inside all the time too. Problem with him being that he's not got a great shot on him and can't pass bloody wind! I am living in the hope that Dolan and Chapman can be wingers to leave full backs stranded this season and that perhaps Pickering can do the same when overlapping down the left. Small changes which can be massively effective.
Lastly I cannot begin to understand why Mowbray, Johnson et al couldn't recognise that failing and address the issue of what effectively became our wasted possession stats. I'd love a pint or two with any of them to hear the reason why..... and put em right to boot!
Seriously though I don't know how Armstrong banged almost 30 goals in but I do know that if we'd played more to his pace and skills and allied them to a better attacking partner he'd have been nearer 40! No doubt he'd already have gone for that elusive 30m too.
