Preston v Rovers: 24th November 2018

Global winner of the 2021 Christmas Quiz 👊🤩🤩
we only have 400 tickets left with over 9 days before the game,is there a chance of more tickets.
I doubt it. It would mean sitting in the sides of the ground where there are Preston ST holders. What tends to happen is that Rovers fans will buy tickets in the Preston areas.

PS. Under 100 left at 4pm today.

must be a nightmare to stop rovers fans doing that as pne is so close.
Never used to matter when I started watching football. Most supporters 'got on' with just a bit of the usual banter. Whether it was a carry over from the the two world wars I really can't say. All that segregation is as a result of 70's and 80's hooliganism.

It doesnt get sweeter than sitting amongst nobbers on jansen day...in amongst nobbers..one gobbing all game about bastard fans and what he would do to us..rovers scored and 50% of stand erupting in nobbers end...me staying calm yup its true....him going mental...final w histle ...nobber going mental about ywatting any rovers fans he sees...me standing on seat singing going up going up ...him looking as I superman punched the gobshite and knocked 7 bells out of him as I got cuffed..the copper saying well done im a Blackpool fan and that prick has needed that for five years now get the fk.out before the sarge clocks it .

Re the segregation issue. I have a vague memory of Francis Lee giving an interview about the year Man City won the league*, and when they played against Newcastle, he said the two sets of fans were mixed in all parts of the ground but there was no trouble them days. It always stuck with me. I imagine there might have been the odd punch up, but none of the organised, ostentatious aggro of today. It's a shame.
*Edit: won the league in 1967/68.

I think Gord was born after the war. (I hope you don't mind me commenting Gordon). I was a war baby (1942) and I think that Gordon is younger than me.
Crikey Al.... you'd be oggling Pinks Grandma when I was born!

Went to grammar school in Preston from 69 -76 , so had a few mates who were PNE fans. . No real intense rivalry in those days ( just normal derby rivalry ) . When we played school football always enjoyed beating St Mary’s and Darwen Grammar , but it was the games against the Blackpool schools that had an extra edge .

If I were a PNE fan I’d be concerned about relatively small crowds for a city club . All things being equal they should get bigger crowds than Rovers , Bolton and Burnley , but for some reason they don’t . Having said that I don’t think Rovers fans should get involved in willy waving over selling out our allocation . It’s only 10 miles down the road so a sell out should be taken for granted

PNE are no different to Bolton , Blackpool & Burnley . Understandably some of their fans have been unable to cope with or forget Rovers success following Uncle Jack’s intervention . You can’t rub out history and our recent & not so recent haul of big trophies make the Rovers the biggest small town club in English football - that’s a fact .

They can call us Plastics , Bas***ds or whatever . However like our famous blue & white halved kit , like it or not , Rovers are special and our achievements make us by far the most successful of the Lancashire textile town clubs .

They desperately want us to be their rivals but are generally insignificant to Rovers fans unless they have a special reason such as Abbey who has the misfortune to have to work with their supporters. If you read their forum it's all about jealousy and attempts to justify them trying to feel our equals.
We only have one real rival worth considering (unless you consider Manu. but that was a long time ago) and that is Burnley who we love to hate but PNE and Bolton, who also want to be our rivals, mean nothing to me except that most of the Bolton fans are thugs.

That didn't happen often!
Glad you brought it up though cos I vividly rem playing in midfield for the 1st X1 away to Preston Catholic College after going over to Preston December '71 on a coach with our U13 team. The strangest thing happened then as we ran out to discover the U13 match was to be refereed by the Sports master whilst our match was reffed by a 6th former from PCC!!! Effectively one of their bloody mates! So... 1-1 a dreadful referee and a blatant hand ball goal awarded to make it 2-1 with a quarter of the match to go. Any hopes of a comeback were thwarted when the Ref sent 3 of us off in the last 15... me being the first into the dressing room! I rem we got a dressing down from the head in Monday's assembly for bringing disgrace to the school and a 3 match ban each. Our sports teacher who had been there decided the ban had to be run over the Christmas holidays!
btw Not saying you and St Mary's were cheats but the same sports teacher always insisted that simply being Catholic made em 6" taller than us ...... that is until the 6th form levelled us all out.;)

I agree , our masters always said that playing for the Catholic College we had a psychological 2-0 lead before the game started , especially when playing local Preston teams in the cup.

From memory playing Darwen Grammar in first to fourth form , wasn’t a fixture we worried about .

However 1st and 2nd XI games did have a bit of needle from time to time , for whatever reason . Remember playing for the 1st XI at Darwen and one of our lads get sent off for lamping one of yours . Your master asked for his name and he replied “ Mickey Mouse “ , took his green shirt off , threw it and walked off . He was banned for the rest of the season . Think we lost that match too.

PS We definately weren’t cheats , just turned up with good sides ;)

PPS What colour of football shirts did DGS play in ? I have a faint memory of burgundy/ maroon - but might be totally wrong

All lower school kits were claret top.

But the 1st X1 strip was claret and sky blue of one fashion or another. When I first went it was the WHU away kit of the time and worn with sky blue shorts and socks as seen here worn by the truly great Bobby Moore....

When I got to the sixth form it was this with sky blue shorts and socks... ignore the motif. I truly liked this strip.

btw by the time you played that 1st X1 match you were playing Darwen Vale not Darwen Grammar. ;)

Disgusting colours to wear and they probably explain why they were Darwens 2nd school after the mighty Moorland.
