1-1. Very dodgy free kick decision not defended properly.

Tosin a little too John stones like for a blood and thunder derby.

My sources let me down. All had the game, iFollow version, but had PNE pregame warmup on a constant loop. Weird.

Followed via Sky Football but that was way out of synch too.

Strangely only very slightly disappointed to have missed the game. Sign of the times.

I predicted a win but expected a loss so ok with a draw. I think.

I'll watch the extended lowlights on iFollow later

I enjoyed it!! It actually felt like a derby game
The shenanigans by half the nob enders team and another piss poor ref made for a volatile atmosphere.

Nyambe was awesome but again ran himself into the ground (and injury) he couldn't possibly have kept his work rate up for a full 90, the north end defence was terrified of him
Downing is such a class act
After that its same old, same old. I hoped Holtby would step up, but in truth he didn't
Gally (ours) huffed and puffed
Armstrong still hasn't been told the offside rule - how can a player with his pace not give the defender a foot start?
Bell !!!!
Thought the two central defenders coped pretty well and overall I feel cheated, we deserved a win

Just about sums it up steve. Competitive by both teams, and frequently combative by North End. How the match ended with only two yellow cards given and with both shown to Rovers players is a complete mystery. Preston were full of nasty tricks from the start and guilty of time wasting tactics from the minute they equalised. One could even be forgiven for thinking they had been coached by Paul Cook! Why Referee Linington never felt moved to caution their antics is reprehensible. From my vantage point Tom Clarke's foot was head height when it smashed into Cory Evan's face! Dangerous play for sure so how was that not a yellow card when Lewis Travis was shown one when he clearly and cleanly played a ball on the floor in a 2nd half tackle? Check out the clip and 50 seconds in Bauer lunges dangerously at Holtby catches him with both feet and nowhere even close to the ball without any punishment whatsoever! It can only be conjecture on my part but I feel that we would have won this match if we'd had a better Ref who had issued a few yellows to the Preston players early in the match instead of letting them continue with their spoiling tactics.
Note to TM. Consider.....if we'd employed similar 'Preston' tactics at Deepdale we'd likely have come home with 3 points! :imp:

A neat finish by Armstrong with just two minutes on the clock had us all on our feet (and the noisy neighbours silenced) but would have had us all ecstatic IF we hadn't seen this before just a couple of months ago at Deepdale! Again the rovers came out of the blocks quickly to take an early lead and again we couldn't take all 3 points. The almost 10 minutes taken to stretcher Evans off and replace him with Johnson played a major part in switching the emphasis and tempo of the match and allowed PNE to re-group and level the scores within minutes. Preston's equaliser coming from a free kick wrongly awarded imo against Lewis Travis for a perfectly clean if unorthodox tackle. Rovers didn't deal with the free kick launched into the area leaving Davies to head it down to the centre edge of the box where a ball watching Gallagher had switched off long enough to allow his man (Harrop) to slip his attention and move to the centre with oceans of time and space to smash an volley into the roof of Walton's net. It was one of those screamers that 99% of the time would have been blocked or would have hit Row Z. Should Walton have saved it? Possibly, it was certainly close enough to him but given the speed of the shot (and the fact that he was prob unsighted by Nyambe) was such that we'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt. I would at this point cut waggy some slack by suggesting that if anyone could react quickly enough to save that volley it would have been his love child David Raya!

Did that goal serve to spur PNE with apparent play off ambitions on to greater things? Did it hell! It appeared to be just a signal to begin their spoiling and stalling tactics aka Luton Town at the end of September. Every free kick saw a Preston player either feigning injury or kicking the ball away or standing over the ball to prevent the Rovers taking it quickly.

Second half saw the Rovers mostly in command and trying to break Preston down but with tensions mounting in the home crowd that PNE might break away and complete a jammy smash and grab. It was not to be and the match petered out 1-1, but not with honours even might I add.
The Rovers cause wasn't helped by the disruptions of losing Evans and Nyambe through injury which prevented Mowbray the use of more attacking and creative substitutions from the bench in the second half.

Suffice to say my MoM this week goes to Rudd in Preston's goal. How he got to a blistering shot from Holtby which was arrowing right down my line of sight and into the top right hand angle of his goal was amazin, as was his reactions to a late shot by Tosin which was heading into the angle on his left.
As for PNE in general. If they do harbour serious ambitions of making the play offs then for
1. They need to realise that winning one and losing one away from home is 50% better than two draws!
2. Their squad isn't good enough. Workmanlike and united but without much promotion quality players in it's ranks .

Walton.... 6 A competent performance but then he only had two shots to save all match! One which would hardly have got over the line and Harrops screamer.

Nyambe... 7 Terrified the PNE defence with his powerful forward runs but defensively still 'only just a do'. Limped off injured again. Like most muscular built powerhouses he does seem injury prone.

Lenihan... 7 Defended well despite being subjected to some 'treatment' when he went up for headers. Poor distribution still bedevilling his game, although tbh if he passed like Tosin he'd be playing in the Prem every week.

Tosin... 7 Got caught a couple of times early doors by Preston forwards who must have been instructed to chase him down when he was on the ball.

Bell.... 6 Usual mix of good and bad. Like Nyambe a full back who is better attacking down the wing than dominating an opposing winger.

Travis... 7 Strong and dominant game in midfield.

Evans ... Retired hurt after 12 minutes. Possible facial fractures. I doubt we'll see him for some time .... and I'm sure Stoke City fans won't either.

Downing... 7 Good game marked by some quality passing.

Gallagher... 5 Played on the right wing. Not a good game from him and the only improvement on the player we had on loan 4 years ago is he didn't screw up in the last minute against the same opposition! To his detriment he never looked like he wanted vengeance. A 'proper' player would have!

Holtby... 6 A performance with some real quality passing and shooting without any real end product. Will always be lacking in pace so this is his position rather than out wide. Just as an aside he was subbed as usual around the 70th minute mark. He's been here months now so surely lasting 90 minutes should be easy enough for him now? Memo to Mowbray.... make training sessions and matches 50 mins each way!;)

Armstrong... 7 Scored the goal and his pace troubled PNE all afternoon. Why the entire defence chose to target him with long high balls when he was marked by Patrick Bauer is a question that needs to be asked! Are they all that thick or was this on Mowbray's advice? In fairness to Armstrong he never ducked the challenge and did manage to win a few and hold the ball up. Dickov showed the similar appetite for a battle as did the wonderful David Speedie. (We'd be top 6 easily with him up top.)

Subs
Johnson... 6 Capable and solid replacement for Evans from the 13th minute. Buckley is skilled but yesterday was a mans game. Looks like Johnson will be getting more game time in the coming weeks.

Bennett.... 6 Replaced the injured Nyambe on 60 mins and did fine although without the head down barnstorming wing play. I heard today he's been ill over Christmas and wouldn't have played at all if Nyambe had been fit.

Graham... 7oth minute for Holtby. Came on and provided his usual target man presence as only he can out of our entire squad. Hit the post ( I think) by deflecting an Armstrong attempt. He did make me wish he'd been on sooner but as last sub I can understand TM's thinking.

Tony Mowbray.... 6 Sent out a decent team, was forced into making substitutions by injury and wasn't mugged off by Alex Neil this time. Over two matches Rovers can feel unlucky to end with a 4:1 points ratio against our workmanlike but pretty limited neighbours. How he must wish he had 13 million to spend on a couple of strikers this month:pensive:!!!
Seriously this squad is a blunt instrument without Dack and God help us if anything happens to Armstrong! If the money wasted (imo) on Gallagher and Brereton in particular had been in the hands of Dyche for example we'd be in the shake up for automatic promotion!
N.B. To TM.... why tf did Walton and his defenders continually lump long high balls toward the diminutive Adam Armstrong?

Referee James Linington 3 He got the Gally / Pen decision right but his weak refereeing marred the game, played into North End's hands and imo denied the Rovers all 3 points.

if we are going to use Armstrongs pace down the middle surely rothwell is better on the right wing than gally.

Good point waggy and without a proper target man we'd have to adopt the tactics and play of Klopp's Liverpool Invincibles!:grinning:

I must say it's not so daft given how poor our strike force is PLUS we do have some serious pace at our disposal allied to the excellent passing abilities of Holtby, Johnson and Downing. I think that type of passing game might have been what Mowbray was attempting to achieve earlier in the season. Unfortunately it failed because our build up play was too slow and deliberate.... a fault believe it or not that at a much higher level I see in Man City at times.

Possibly but Rothwell's form has been up and down of late. Also Gallagher does have a bit of muscle which combined with Nyambe's runs does serve to overpower full backs. Preston are a physical mob of scrappers so I'll give TM the benefit of the doubt.

i thought Bell had a decent game, johnson was the one that slowed things down,if we could get Tugay to teach Travis to shoot he would be some player.

cardiff and swansea drew so this weeks disappiontment aint hit us to hard do we play sheff wed next, good time to play them after leeds, who will mess things up again, leeds gates are strange always 35k,you would have thought 40k yesterday.

Hopefully we've turned the corner with that battling display (and other cliches). We're still three wins away from ensuring safety. If we want to start thinking about a late surge, Mowbray has to address the goal scoring issue.
