So that's 5 defeats on the bounce and bouncing is something we need to do pdq because we are now sat firmly at the bottom of the Form Table and starting to look down the Division at the clubs below us rather than up at those above. Not completely unexpected tonight against the Championship's money men but what went before against the likes of QPR, Barnsley, Forest and Nob end is the real kicker. All those teams were below us at the time we played them and now Forest are level and the other 3 are now looking down at us. The biter bit is that we have lost each match by just one goal. We seem to haved had bad luck and bad play in equal measure since our last win against Luton.
Tonight we gave it a go but were just outclassed by all that filthy lucre that the Premier League hand out to their dear departed. I know it's still 11 v11 but I'd estimate the wage bill for Watford is 4x times ours or more which illustrates how they have managed to retain the services of some real quality players. They've managed to off load Deulofeu to Udinese in the Jan transfer window but he was top earner on 75k pw, Sarr and their sub tonight Andre Gray command 63k pw, Deeney gets 55k whilst Cleverly and Capoue of 45k pw each, etc etc. Stupid money but how many times have we commented on that and stated that football will go bust? It never bloody well does do though does it? Just a point but spare a thought for 19 year old Joao Pedro who scored and got an assist tonight. The poor little bugger only gets 12500 pw! Fantasy football indeed!
It seems to me we are finally where we were when Jack decided to step up to the plate on his now famous journey over the Pennines with Richard Matthewman after another evening match defeat. I can't rem if it was Grimsby, Hull or Barnsley who had turned us over so no doubt someone will remind me.
On to the game. For once in recent weeks we came up against a team who had the confidence and belief to come to play and not with the intention of preventing us playing first. Like every other game this season the stats show that we had the upper hand in the possession stats. It is of course no consolation but one has to question how we can do that against a moneybags squad of quality and yet still look second best for most of the game. For starters missing the experience and influence of Darragh Lenihan has been colossal. H-Bellis and Branthwaite struggled today against the quality of Watford's attackers. Either one would have fared much better with Lenihan alongside to talk them through the match.
The midfield is misfiring, Evans today was probably the pick of the bunch which say's much. Poor old Lewis Travis is the main concern, his command. his timing in the tackle, his aggression and it seems to me his confidence has never recovered from that injury. The lad is struggling and injuries to Johnson and Holtby have left us short staffed. Anyone know where Trybull is? One thing that I did again see and I'll exempt Evans here but there are too many midfielders who do NOT track back quickly enough to get goals side of their opposite number when we lose possession. Travis was found wanting in that department as too was Rothwell whilst Downing's defending and tracking back when he came on was woeful. No wonder when that is taken into consideration is it that Watford didn't have to bust a gut to score tonight is it? I've banged on on here time and again that good teams have 11 defenders when the other team are in possession. We scored two tonight at home and lost which kind of validates my opinion.
Kaminsky... 4 Not his best performance for us by some distance. Only my opinion but I believe he should have got to that first goal. OK it was fortunate to drop in but if he'd dived for that ball with his hands I feel he'd have got something on it before Pedro got a touch. He should also have done better imo with the other two goals and he was lucky to get away with some of his too hurried distribution on a couple of occasions.
Nyambe.. 6 A neat bit of play saw him pass the full back, hit the by line and put in a dangerous cross. Unfortunately he was never allowed to repeat that move. Defended with his usual uncertainty and again.
Harwood-Bellis.. 5 Struggled but his inexperience let him down on occasion. The third goal particularly as Sema's shot went though him.
Branthaite... 6 Screwed up totally for Watford's first goal. Did make some sort of amends by putting in some decent defending including heading one off the line. Could have snatched a late leveller on Watford's back post but unfortunately got his feet mixed up.
Douglas... 6 A tough task marking Watford's danger man Sarr but did fairly well overall.
Travis.. 5 Not at the races since his return from injury for some reason. The Lion of our midfield has lost form. It's a mystery why he has and lets hope it's only temporary. Doesn't deserve his place in the starting line up at present although I'm loathe to say it.
Evans... 7 Put a good shift in and justified his selection.
Rothwell...6 A quiet match overall. Somehow he has lost his hunger and verve for attacking the opposition. One bright spot when his tenacity in closing the ball down saw him create the opening for Elliott's goal.
Elliot.... 7 Decent game and capped it with a fine goal from a narrow angle with his 'swinger'.
Dack... 7 Much more like the Dack of old. Involved himself all over the park and took a lot of punishment at times without protection from the Ref and seemed to be penalised very time he gave a bit back.
Armstrong... 6 Again was our biggest attacking threat. Tested Bachmann with a couple of good shots and should really have tested him with more. Just lost out in one break as the keeper came 25 yards out of his goals to nick the ball away when he was through on goal. If he'd timed that wrong he'd have been off and the result might have been much different.
Subs
Downing... 6 (Travis 56 minutes). Played on the left and involved himself in attacking moves. Certainly not involved in many defending responsibilities. Seems the legs have finally gone.
Dolan.. 6 ( Dack 69) Put a decent shift in on the wings and does bring effervescence and inexperience in equal measure.
Brereton... 6 (Rothwell 69) Decent contribution from Ben for once and capped it off with the type of goal he should have scored more often as be used his strength to bully his marker off the ball for the 2nd goal. Finished it well.
Tony Mowbray... 5 The words of Stan Ternent came back to me as I write this... "If I had a mini and you have a Ferrari". Has tried every combination of tactics and personnel to turn around our loss in form and none of them have worked. Unfortunate to have Lenihan (and of course Johnson and Holtby) injured for this one as he could have perhaps prevented at least one of the goals and seen us get something from this match.
Referee James Linington 7 Didn't get everything right and was rather one eyed on decisions concerning Dack and Armstrong but at least let the match flow. Should have been a 6 perhaps except I still have Saturday's plonker as an immediate comparison. We haven't had this chap often. Last time was v PNE in the 1-1 draw at Ewood last season
