Indeed ODB. "One swallow does not a summer make".
The match was fairly equal until the rovers went ahead and then Sunderland folded completely.

Football eh! Who would have thought it? So pleased for the players and the manager. Dolan, Hedges, Sammie and Gallagher playing together are so important to us. Suddenly life seems better tonight!
Probably kick off next season (wherever we are) without three of those.

anyway guys, Who saw that coming?
For my thinking, it might have been "players taking control".
we saw that at least once last season.

Well I predicted that we'd win but I'd never have predicted that margin. Funny how their caretaker manager has ripped into them in the press as being pathetic in the manner of all defeated managers, but never praised the rovers for playing well.

His win record is the worst in the clubs history behind Jim Aley and more recently “Coyle” … he needs more results and quickly iMo. That said boy did it feel good today 5-1. I hope the players as they showed show that same confidence

Just remembered goozburger wasn't at the match so I'll have to come on as sub.

Fat Lady? Lady Luck? Rub of the Green? Call it what you will but whatever deserted us in October at about the same time that the Swedish manager fell on his sword (as he promised if Sweden failed to qualify for the euros). I don't know if there is any connection but in Norse mythology the Norns were three wise women spinners who determined every allotted life span. One spun out the thread of each life, another measured its length, and the third decided when the thread should be snapped. Well the final actions of that third norn imo was long overdue, she should have cut the cord from which JDT was hanging much much earlier!
Whatever... the table looks so much better this morning and is reflected in my mood. Never mind Sky's Super saturday, yesterday was Masgnificent Monday as the Rovers notched 5 and the rest of the relegation threatened clubs all dropped points. Birmingham being the exception but they were only playing North End who always seem unable to ever do us a favour. I suspect a number of Nob Enders would be happier to see us relegated than themselves get in the play offs such is their jealous hatred of BRFC. Even Rotherham discovered the spirit of defiance despite being hanging by the thinnest of those norn threads found the wherewithall to leave Millwall a point and 5 goals adrift of us.
So I reckon 1 more win and although it isn't certain the norns can forget about our immediate future. Might be as well as the rovers have the daunting task of facing Southampton on Saturday who were beaten at the death of a pulsating match at Ipswich yesterday. Southampton looked by far the classier team but Ipswich made up for it with guts and desire and grabbed all three points with the last kick of the match after being 2-1 down for a large part of the match. Southampton with their Rovers cast offs Armstrong and Rothwell now virtually certain of having to settle for the dreaded play offs.
As for the match itself the opening 20 minutes followed the usual pattern of a decent performance marred by poor passing for both teams, there seemed hardly a cigarette paper between them and at that time the match could nhave gone either way. Poor old Harry Pick had to be replaced by Chrisene on 20 minutes and I'm sure most along with myself though 'here we go again' on the injury front. The match changed when Dolan won the ball in midfield, played a smart one two with Chrisene and Dolan on the edge of Sunderlands box found a bit of trickery to wrong foot the Sunderland defence and put Szmodics through on goal, a quick shot inside the far post and it was 1-0.
Six minutes later and a quick throw in by Dolan on the left took out two Sunderland defenders and left him to play a smart one two with Brittain (what was he doing over there?) before squaring the ball to JRC who in one move turned and skinned his marker leaving him able to find Szmodics to finish from the same spot and in the same manner as with the first goal. 0-2 and from that moment on, although I didn't dare to believe it Sunderland were dead and buried. Some black cats believed it though as a number were to be seen heading bleakly for the exit and no doubt the comfort of the pub.
Two minutes into the second half Hedges won the ball and began a move in his own half before passing to Gallagher who carried the ball forward and returned the ball to the sprinting Hedges who carried the ball forward and slid the ball into the net from the penalty spot as a chorus of boos rained down on the Sunderland players. Those boos intensified and rained down onto the home team when Hedges again won the ball on the wing before squaring to Dolan who bamboozled two defenders and poked a cute finish just inside the far post. 54 minutes and it was 4-0. Could we breath easy? I couldn't quite but I was breathing easier at this point. 77 minutes and Bradley Dack timed his run to perfection as we all know he can to squeeze in between Hyam and Wharton and force Pears into a smart diving save inside the post, Pears couldn't hold the ball and the inrushing Rigg had the simplest of tasks to drive the ball into the net. 4-1 and a little anxiety entered the Robvers supporters minds? Surely not even rovers could spew this now... could they?:worried: 4 minutes later and it was game over as Markanday's cross was deflected to Szmodics who put it on a plate for Moran to finish from close range. Time to lean back and light a cigar whilst the remaining Sland supporters trudged out of the Stadium of Light Shite.

Pears.... 7 Did what he needed throughout but will rue spewing Dack's header and not keepinga clean sheet.

Brittain.... 7 Solid enough performance.

Hyam.... 7 Much better than of late against Jody Bellingham.

Wharton 7 A composed performance.

Pickering N/A hobbled off with an injury on 20 mins. Lets hope this was precautionary as Chrisene doesn't impress me all that much.

Tronstad... 6 Filled in the middle of the park in a quiet but effective fashion.

Rankin Costello... 8 (MoM) had a great game which must according to BB have had the Sheff Wed scouts in the crowd purring.

Dolan... 8 Up there with JRC for MoM. Made the first and played a big part in the build up to the second. A thorn in the side Sland's defenders throughout.

Szmodics... 8 Always delivers doesn't he? Snuck another goal in front of Adam Armstrong in first place of Championship goalscorers in the process.

Hedges... 8 Another nemesis for Sunderland as he scored one for himself and provided an assist for Dolan.

Gallagher... 7 Didn't score out of the five but had an assist and used his strength well to unsettle the defenders. Came in for some rough stuff from a couple of Sunderland players.

Subs

Chrisene.. 7 (20 mins Pickering) Doesn't convince me defensively for someone on a Prem clubs books but looked much better when in a more advanced role.

Moran 7 (67 mins Gallagher) Came on for Gallagher and grabbed a goal. I think at this point and 4-0 up that Eustace wanted to calm the on field feud between Gally and the Sland defence.

Markanday... 6 (74 Hedges ) Contributed a little trickery on the right wing and made Moran's goal.

Buckley... 7 (74 JRC) Played a strong part in replacing the MoM and exerted an authoratitive and calming influence on proceedings.

Manager Eustace... 7 Can be proud of his players efforts and spirit after that performance. Sure just about everything went for us on the day (about bloody time), but that win and the manner of it should inject some much needed confidence into the squad for the run in.

Referee John Busby 9 👏 I've been critical of Mr Busby in two previous reviews but I take my hat off to any ref who can control a game as he did and get most decisions correct without issuing a yellow card! I wonder what the bookies would have offered before the match for him not to issue at least one yellow card for the whole match?

You are probably better at the reviews than me in any case, but I'll do today's game. I'm back in Old Blighty for the next two games, so ironically I won't be able to do them as I'll be faffing around, but I'll be back after that.
