https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...tains-hardest-cop-SIX-times-head-machete.html

This was a horrendous attack on a policeman .

However the learned judge , Mrs Justice Carr , in her wisdom , decided that although he had previously been convicted of rape and a similar machete attack , she deemed those offences inadmissible , despite the jury asking about any previous convictions.

He was then found guilty of grievous bodily harm instead of attempted murder .

The left tends to be on the side of the perpetrators , but there is no excuse , the justice system and the Tories are failing victims of violent crime .

I’ll be interested in what sort of sentence this scumbag gets , I’d lock him up and throw away the key .
I'm fuming, have you seen the video recorded by the bobbys bodycam?

Shocking scenes but ...

I think because it was an attack on a police officer he will be dealt with more severely than if it had been an attack on a member of the public, which tbh isn't right.

I think the police officer made a mistake by actually allowing matey to get back into his van in the first place. Control of the situation was out of his hands by then.

Also if we go back 40 years there would have been 2 male officers together at night and he probably wouldn't have been allowed back in the van and instead whacked with two truncheons!

If the police were allowed side arms I think the problem of how to sentence him now wouldn't have arisen.

No doubt ODB will be along to put me right.

Final point.... the nation is full of this filth! Penal colony somewhere very remore in the world who we could pay to contain such rogues would serve nicely.

I’ve just studied that video again and there actually was another officer present. In terms of not allowing him to get in his van I dont think he’d actually committed any offence at that point so to try and physically stop him would have constituted an assault, there quite clearly was a struggle and then the offender produced the machete and we can see what happened next unfortunately.

His defence team have done him a wonderful service convincing the judge not to allow his previous convictions to be made available to the jury. This should have been allowed and he should have been convicted of attempted murder, he quite clearly is a danger to society. 16 years is not enough and if the early release scheme is still active in the future he would be eligible for early release after eight years less the time he spent on remand. I wonder how many years of his nine year sentence in 1996 I think it was, did he actually serve?

Surely he had committed an offence by driving an uninsured vehicle (before and after he was made aware of the fact) and was obviously attempting to do so again, in which case he'd have been a threat to the public.

You are absolutely correct in what you are saying. I was just attempting to second guess what was going through the bobbys mind at the time. Just like in many occupations split second decisions have to be made sometimes with possible serious consequences.

Only 1 in 14 crimes results in someone being charged. Kinell
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51221054
If that's the figure for the ones charged, imagine how low the percentage is for actual convictions, it could possibly even be close to 1% Then when you think about 'just convictions' (just look at things like the Machete attack posted here that wasn't deemed attempted murder and closer to home the Blackburn career burglar that was fined £10), proper punishments could probably amount to 0.5% (half a percent) or even less. Isn't it a good job we've got a Conservative Government that has been tough on the criminals for 10 years already and continues to be so. Or one might start to think that the UK is a Criminal's Paradise and there's going to be at least 5 more years of it yet . . .

Smart MWays were intended as a revenue collector / stealth tax and that's that!

Hard shoulders were put there in the first place for a purpose by people who weren't stupid. Hardly rocket science just plain old fashioned common sense. Why would anyone be stupid enough to believe that we can dispense with them now that traffic volume is many times heavier?
Heads really should roll for the wasted money and time in installing them. HS2 and vastly improved, high speed cross pennine railway lines could have been done and dusted by now! Failing that and taking a nod toward opposition politicians favourite hobby horse, just how many hospitals could have been built and staffed?

Is there only me that sees a parallel between this case and the Harry Dunn /Mrs Sakoolas issue? Both hiding from facing the music and their home governments aiding them to do so.

Now a helicopter crash anywhere is a tragedy for some and certainly when children are involved as in this case but I do think our media are over playing Kobe Bryant's death. Reason is that until 2 days ago I had never even heard of the chap.

I thought that last night when I heard the news on the radio. Maybe Andrew is trying to kickstart the process for extradition of that crap American driver.

Why is it so difficult to manage and run a franchise like that? There must be a reason I suppose but it seems mighty odd to me. Why not simply employ someone off railways in Switzerland or Japan or somewhere?

The service they provided and I use the term extremely loosely has been absolutely shocking. This is long overdue.
